Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the continuous increase in human population and its constant demands on the aquatic environment, there has been a compounding of the interrelationships between algae and man. These relatively simple green plants not too long ago were often considered as merely biological curiosities. Within the past twenty-five years, with advances in technology and the increased eutrophication of lakes and streams, the interplay between algae and man has become more complex and more im portant. Problems of taste, odor, toxicity, or obnoxious growth caused by algae are unfortunately quite familiar to the water supplier and to the public health worker. Algae have met their role in the space age as a possible source for food or as a gas ex changer. In order to explore any of these practical problems, it is essential to have adequate, basic knowledge of algal taxonomy, physiology, cytogenetics and ecology. This book is the outgrowth of a North Atlantic Treaty Organi zation Advanced Study Institute in which authorities in both the applied and basic fields of phycology, as well as in cognate disci plines, met and discussed various topics related to algae. It is of significance to note that this was the first NATO Advanced Study Institute to be held in the United States and that it had for its theme a subject which is of import for the welfare of all mankind.

Book Algal and Fungal Toxins

Download or read book Algal and Fungal Toxins written by Solomon Kadis and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Microbial Toxins, Volume VII: Algal and Fungal Toxins reviews research and investigations on algal and fungal toxins. This book discusses the distribution of poisonous dinoflagellates; pharmacology of blue-green algal toxins; control of Prymnesium and detection of toxin in nature; and F-2 (zearalenone) estrogenic mycotoxin from Fusarium. The effect of Fusarium toxins in animals; mycotoxins produced by Fusarium tricinctum NRRL 3249; and mold growth and production and isolation of trichothecenes are also elaborated. This publication likewise covers the chemistry of scirpene toxic substances of Fusarium nivale; isolation of salivation factor; and mammalian toxicity of epidithiadioxopiperazines. This volume is a useful reference for scientists and graduate students in various disciplines —microbiology, biochemistry, pharmacology, epidemiology, oncology, and related fields.

Book The Blue Green Algae

    Book Details:
  • Author : G Fogg
  • Publisher : Elsevier
  • Release : 2012-12-02
  • ISBN : 0323149235
  • Pages : 474 pages

Download or read book The Blue Green Algae written by G Fogg and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Blue-Green Algae attempts to assemble a unified picture of blue-green algae as living organisms. It describes the organism's general features of form and structure, cellular organization, cell biology, gas vacuoles, and movements. The book addresses the culture, nutrition, growth, photosynthesis, chemosynthesis, heterotrophy, respiration, nitrogen metabolism, differentiation, reproduction, and life cycles of the blue-green algae. The organisms' freshwater and terrestrial ecology, pathogens, symbiosis, evolution, and phylogeny are also explained. These organisms form a substantial fraction of the biomass in several important types of habitat. Consequently, it is desirable to understand their activities if natural resources are to be conserved and used to best advantage. This book will be useful to students and research workers in this field of interest.

Download or read book The Water Environment written by Wayne Carmichael and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 487 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The conference on The Water Environment: Algal Toxins and Health was held at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio, on June 29, 30, July 1, 2, 1980. Its principal objectives were to bring together, for the first time, researchers, public officials and interested parties in order to present and discuss what is known about algal toxins. The conference concentrated almost exclusively on toxins and toxic blooms of blue-green algae (Cyanobacteria). Since the most common Cyanobacteria bloom forming species are also the ones most likely to produce toxins, they are a problem in the maintenance of safe animal and human water supplies. While poison ings by Cyanobacteria involve mainly domestic and wild animals, they may also be responsible for cases of human gastroenteritis and con tact poisoning. Even though human poisonings by Cyanobacteria have historically not been a widespread problem, continued deterioration of our recreational and municipal water supplies suggests that blooms of non-toxic and toxic Cyanobacteria blooms will increase. In addi tion to studies on their role as disease agents, there is basic research being done on their pharmacological properties to determine their mode of action and usefulness as tools in the study of basic neuromuscular mechanisms. These papers were centrally typed for reproduction as camera ready copy. Each paper was reviewed and edited by at least two per sons of the editorial committee. This volume is organized into five major sections: 1.
