Download or read book The Poetry of Alfred de Musset written by Lloyd Bishop and published by Peter Lang Incorporated, International Academic Publishers. This book was released on 1987 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professor Bishop's book challenges the conventional wisdom that sees Alfred de Musset solely as the writer of intensely personal lyric poetry. By closely studying Musset's major poetic works and his numerous reflections on the art of poetry, Bishop reveals a poet whose work cannot be reduced to a sentimental cri de coeur and whose poetics cannot be reduced to an esthetique du sentiment. Musset is shown to be a poet of many styles and many genres, including a substantial poetry of ideas. The book also offers closely reasoned discussions of subjects rarely discussed in French letters: romantic irony, the greater Romantic lyric, musicality and euphony."

Book excerpt: This volume begins with the rise of German Idealism and Romanticism, traces the developments of naturalism, positivism, and materialism and of later-century attempts to combine idealist and naturalist modes of thought. Written by a team of leading international scholars this crucial period of philosophy is examined from the novel perspective of themes and lines of thought which cut across authors, disciplines, and national boundaries. This book was released on 2013-02-07 with total page 796 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the nineteenth century, literary criticism first developed into an autonomous, professional discipline in the universities. This volume provides a comprehensive and authoritative study of the vast field of literary criticism between 1830 and 1914. In over thirty essays written from a broad range of perspectives, international scholars examine the growth of literary criticism as an institution, and the major critical developments in diverse national traditions and in different genres, as well as the major movements of Realism, Naturalism, Symbolism and Decadence. The History offers a detailed focus on some of the era's great critical figures, such as Sainte-Beuve, Hippolyte Taine and Matthew Arnold, and includes essays devoted to the connections of literary criticism with other disciplines in science, the arts and Biblical studies. The publication of this volume marks the completion of the monumental Cambridge History of Literary Criticism from antiquity to the present day.

Download or read book Popular French Romanticism written by James Smith Allen and published by Syracuse University Press. This book was released on 1981-01-01 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on the Paris book world of this period, Allen reveals how the rise of a new popular literature—jolly chansonniers, the roman-feuilletons or serial novels, melodramas, gothic and sentimental novels, dramatic nationalistic histories—by such authors as Dumas, Sand, Lamennais, Ancelot, Desnoyer, and de Kock coincided with remarkable developments in the production, distribution, and consumption of books. Allen's research ranges from a survey of the then-popular romantic titles and authors and the trade catalogs of booksellers and lending libraries, to the police records of their activities, diaries and journals of working people, and military conscript records and ministerial literacy statistics. The result is a remarkable picture of the exchange between elite and popular culture, the interaction between ideas and their material reality, and the relationship between the literature and the history of France in the romantic period.
Download or read book Romantic Disillusionism and the Sceptical Tradition written by Rolf P. Lessenich and published by V&R Unipress. This book was released on 2017-01-16 with total page 485 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Platonic Romanticism had a dark underside from its inception: Romantic Disillusionism, encompassing the Gothic and the new demonic doppelganger. The Classical Tradition's conflict between Plato and Pyrrho, foundationalism and scepticism, optimism and pessimism was thus continued. Lord Byron's was the most listened-to and echoed voice of Romantic Disillusionism in Europe, though by far not the only one. This comparative study of a multiplicity of sceptical English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Russian, Polish, and Czech voices shows how traditional Pyrrhonic arguments were updated to suit the decades of the Romantic Movement, surviving as a subversive countercurrent to later Victorianism and resurging in the literature of the Decadence and Fin de Siècle.
