Chapter XVIIL OF THE FUNDAMENTAL SEVENTHS OF THE DOMINANT, SUPERTONIC, AND TONIC. Introduction. The following chords of the seventh, both in their form and their resolution, are perfectly well known; the novelties in this chapter are--I, that the chords which have been generally considered to make modulation, namely, those of the supertonic and tonic, are here treated as strictly belonging to the key, and the proofs of their being so are given; and II, the peculiar resolutions of the sevenths and thirds, the sevenths ascending and the thirds descending, which, although in accordance with the practice of the best modem authors, are now for the first time reduced to rule. 2. These chords consist of precisely the same intervals whether the key be major or minor; thus, if in C minor the fundamental seventh of the tonic Ex. 2. be used, the third being major the E will be tj; or if also in the minor the fundamental seventh of the supertonic be used, the fifth being perfect the A will be (Ex. 2). 3. Each of these three chords is susceptible of three inversions; the first inversion has the third in the bass, it is lettered B with the figure 7 (Ex 3.) 4. The second inversion has the fifth in the bass; it is lettered C with the necessary figures (Ex. 4).: 5. In this inversion the root is frequently omitted, in which case the chord must be lettered B, with figures to show any inflected notes, (Ex. 5); when this form of the chord occurs as the second inversion of the dominant harmony, it is the chord of the sixth on the second of the scale Chap. IV., sect. 17).f The incomplete second inversion of the supertonic seventh and that of the tonic seventh are corresponding chords of the sixth, with one or more chromatic notes. 6. The third...

Book Alfred Day s Treatise on Harmony Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Alfred Day's Treatise on Harmony As the Introduction to the Chapters in the following work contain such matter as is usually comprised in a preface, but placed immediately before that part of the subject to which it refers, the preface itself will naturally be short. There are, however, a few points to which it is necessary to call the reader's attention. It is exceedingly probable that the notation used in the following work will - by players on stringed instruments - be said to be incorrect, because, when playing according to it they play out of tune. This I have myself experienced; still the fault is not in the notation, but in the false position in which the fingers are placed for the chromatic notes on those instruments. This I shall now prove. Supposing on the violin, a performer, playing in the key of C, take on the E string the following notes - G, A, A, he would play them thus: G, second finger; A, third finger, nearly close to the second finger; A, third finger in its proper place (at a distance from the nut equal to a quarter of the distance from the nut to the bridge): this (if the basses were C, C, F) would be out of tune, the A being too flat. In the ordinary method of noting the same passage, G, G#, A, the G# would be played with the second finger nearly close to the third, and therefore nearer to the bridge than the A: this (with the same bass) would be in tune. The relative pitch of different notes is in proportion to the number of vibrations made by each in a given time, the lower the note the smaller the number of vibrations. The number or ratio of vibrations is in inverse proportion to the length of string. It is proved in a note to Chap. XXI., sect. 16, of this book, that the diatonic semitone above any note is larger or sharper than the chromatic: that is, that E is sharper than D#, and the same with the other chromatic and diatonic semitones.
