Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Named a Best Book of the Year by the New York Times Book Review, the San Francisco Chronicle, Kirkus Reviews, and the Washington Post Book World. From the Booker Prize-winning author of The Gathering and Actress, this is a collection of sharp, unpredictable short fiction about people struggling to connect in an increasingly disconnected world. Yesterday’s Weather shows us a rapidly changing Ireland, a land of family and tradition, but also, increasingly, of organic radicchio, cruise-ship vacations, and casual betrayals. An artisan farmer seethes at the patronage of a former Catholic-school classmate, now a successful restaurateur; a bride cheats on her rich husband with an old college friend—a madman who refuses his pills, disappears for weeks on end, and plays the piano like a dream. These and other stories make up a volume that is “astonishing: moving, emotionally accurate, sly, and laugh-out-loud funny” (O, The Oprah Magazine). “A dazzling collection.” —Time Out

Book excerpt: The bestselling author of Seven Seas, Nine Lives continues the remarkable experiences of Captain A.W.F. “Alfie” Sutton during the Second World War. Written in three parts, this book follows the harrowing adventures of Captain A.W.F. “Alfie” Sutton, CBE, DSC and bar, RN. During events which come as close to fiction as is imaginable, the first part describes how Alfie, badly injured and close to death during the bombing of HMS Illustrious by the Luftwaffe in January 1941, wakes to find himself laid out among the dead, but miraculously still able to help the ship on to Malta. After full recovery, part two starts with his involvement in the Allied campaign in Greece in the spring of 1941, leading to him eventually evacuating the Greek royal family in a flying boat. After numerous escapades he fights with the defenders during the German invasion of Crete in 1941. Admiral Cunningham was later to describe Sutton’s efforts as “an example of grand personal courage under the worst possible conditions which stands out brightly in the gloom.” It was a struggle doomed to failure, but Alfie survived to continue his war and tell his story to author Richard Pike who relates it here with passion, pace and drama.

Book Damon Runyon Omnibus

Download or read book Damon Runyon Omnibus written by Damon Runyon and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2023-11-21 with total page 590 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This compilation of the American newspaperman and short story writer Damon Runyon's works is sure to leave you in stitches. Runyon was best known for his short tales celebrating the world of Broadway in New York City, a world that grew out of the Prohibition era of the early twentieth century. To New Yorkers of his generation, a "Damon Runyon character" evoked a distinctive social type from Brooklyn or Midtown Manhattan. He spun humorous and sentimental tales of gamblers, hustlers, actors, and gangsters, few of whom go by "square" names, preferring instead colorful monikers such as "Nathan Detroit", "Benny Southstreet", "Big Jule", "Harry the Horse", "Good Time Charley", "Dave the Dude", or "The Seldom Seen Kid".

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wayside teaching is about intentionally practicing what educators do every day in perhaps unintentional ways: relate to students. This practical, research-based guide illustrates how wayside teaching—the informal curriculum, implicit instruction, and mentoring that happens in sometimes unintentional ways—can be intentionally practiced across grade levels to enhance learning and boost student outcomes. Through a framework focused on attitudes, approaches, and actions, and using vignettes that illuminate wayside teaching in action, Sara Davis Powell demonstrates how reaching out to students in formal and informal situations helps create a culture of belonging and safety that strengthens a student’s self-image, confidence, resiliency, and cognitive processes. Offering invaluable resources, including student surveys for learning more about your students and an annotated booklist for promoting acceptance and compassion, Wayside Teaching reflects the powerful influence that teachers’ actions can have on their students’ academic and personal lives.
