Book excerpt: Belinda Bishop is about to begin her military career. As she recalls her great grandmothers telling of the legend of her mythical ancestorLarentina, known as the She Wolf of ancient Sparta, who was the presumed daughter of Zeus Belinda draws inspiration from a woman who both lived and most likely died by the sword, proved she was equal to men, and represented courage and opportunity for all women. As the daughter of a royal family, Larentinas epic journey begins in fifth century BC, in the land of Sparta. Throughout Larentinas lifes journey, she uncovers the mysteries of her heritage, her surroundings, and her abilities to affect the future and the world around her. As she grows from a strong and mysterious child into a sensual and independent woman, Larentina inspires the women around her to see no limits on their abilities and on their power to influence others. As Belinda learns the ways that Larentina exposes the hypocrisy of a tyrannical political and religious system, she must decide how to make positive changes in her own flawed world. Larentina is an unforgettable mythical tale of bravery, strength, and the willingness to sacrifice everything for ideals, honor, and family.

Book You Never Forget Your First

Download or read book You Never Forget Your First written by Alexis Coe and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2020-02-04 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: AN INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER AN NPR CONCIERGE BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR “In her form-shattering and myth-crushing book….Coe examines myths with mirth, and writes history with humor… [You Never Forget Your First] is an accessible look at a president who always finishes in the first ranks of our leaders.” —Boston Globe Alexis Coe takes a closer look at our first--and finds he is not quite the man we remember Young George Washington was raised by a struggling single mother, demanded military promotions, caused an international incident, and never backed down--even when his dysentery got so bad he had to ride with a cushion on his saddle. But after he married Martha, everything changed. Washington became the kind of man who named his dog Sweetlips and hated to leave home. He took up arms against the British only when there was no other way, though he lost more battles than he won. After an unlikely victory in the Revolutionary War cast him as the nation's hero, he was desperate to retire, but the founders pressured him into the presidency--twice. When he retired years later, no one talked him out of it. He left the highest office heartbroken over the partisan nightmare his backstabbing cabinet had created. Back on his plantation, the man who fought for liberty must confront his greatest hypocrisy--what to do with the men, women, and children he owns--before he succumbs to death. With irresistible style and warm humor, You Never Forget Your First combines rigorous research and lively storytelling that will have readers--including those who thought presidential biographies were just for dads--inhaling every page.

Book Story Myth and Celebration in Old French Narrative Poetry 1050 1200

Download or read book Story Myth and Celebration in Old French Narrative Poetry 1050 1200 written by Karl D. Uitti and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-03-08 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twelfth-century France has been described as the key to many of the most important developments of medieval civilization. Nowhere is this description more accurate than in the domain of poetic invention. The years 1050 to 1200 witnessed the development of a brilliant body of vernacular narrative that not only expressed the complexity of its own time but also bequeathed to posterity a wide gamut of creative possibilities. Although much has been written about the works of this period, Karl Uitti offers the first critically orientated overview of this poetry as poetry. In the sections devoted to the Songs of Alexis and Roland he studies the narrative as it serves, in various ways, truths exterior to its own organization. These include the implications of Alexis' imitation of Christ and the way the Song of Roland is history conceived in literary and poetic terms. Although a number of devices are examined, the poems are seen in terms of their total significance. The second part of the book, dedicate principally to the œuvre of Chrétien de Troyes, discusses a new kind of poetry, poetry whose truth depends on the reader's submitting entirely to the internal coherence of each work—in a very meaningful sense the poem itself is the thing. What it says is specifically a matter of how it says it. No higher claim for the dignity of poetic activity has ever been made. Originally published in 1973. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

Book The Nixies of McGillivray Lake

Download or read book The Nixies of McGillivray Lake written by Sheryl Doiron-Powers and published by World Castle Publishing, LLC. This book was released on 2021-09-13 with total page 69 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A family vacation in the remote British Columbia wilderness with no cell signal or electricity was not Alexis’ ideal Labour Day weekend. Not that she had much choice in the matter. Rather than find herself grounded, the 16-year-old resigned herself to a dull weekend alone with her parents, surrounded by nothing but trees. While her friends back home threw their back-to-school parties and had the time of their lives, she’d be forced to miss out on all the excitement and spend her last days of freedom trying not to die of boredom. Out of her element and focused on her frustrations, it took her a moment to notice that all was not as it should be out there in the deep, dark woods. There, beneath the dock, the eyes of a fish peered out from beneath the shadows. It watched her closely, almost as if sizing her up. Her mother’s assurance that fish don’t watch people did nothing to ease her mind, and she soon became aware of other creatures that lurked in the shadowy recesses all around her. The arrival of two other girls her own age from across the lake should have been a welcome distraction. Instead of relief, however, Alexis found they made her uncomfortable and was suspicious of them. While city life may not have prepared her for the wilderness, it had taught her to trust her instincts. Wanting to get to the bottom of the sense of mystery the sisters presented, Alexis decided to forego a jaunt on the lake with her parents to investigate on her own. This led her to discover the dark and dangerous secrets of McGillivray Lake, hidden beneath nature's picturesque façade.
