Download or read book Smart Zero energy Buildings and Communities for Smart Grids written by Nikos Kampelis and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2022-04-05 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Smart zero-energy buildings and communities have a major role to play in the evolution of the electric grid towards alignment with carbon neutrality policies. The goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the built environment can be pursued through a holistic approach, including the drastic reduction of buildings’ energy consumption. The state-of-the-art in this field relates, on the one hand, to design methodologies and innovative technologies which aim to minimize the energy demand at the building level. On the other hand, the development of information and communication technologies, along with the integration of renewable energy and storage, provide the basis for zero and positive energy buildings and communities that can produce, store, manage and exchange energy at a local level. This book provides a structured and detailed insight of the state-of-the-art in this context based on the analysis of real case studies and applications.

Download or read book Daylight Performance of Buildings written by Marc Fontoynont and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-05-01 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As part of Daylight Europe, the daylighting behaviour of 60 buildings was observed and measured during a three year period. Buildings of many different types, sizes and ages were included - from offices to museums, libraries, churches, houses, airports and factories; from Classical buildings to modern constructions, and from a small single room to an office of over 100,000 square meters. The results of the study of each building are presented, extensively illustrated in colour, with the unusual features and main lessons highlighted. The book also includes details of the monitoring procedures, the results of and comparisons with simulations, the outcome of post-occupancy evaluation, and a summary of the major findings. These show the extraordinary potential of daylighting techniques to improve amenity and energy performance for the benefit of the occupants and building managers. They also demonstrate how often opportunities are missed, and the frequency of problems of overheating or glare. Above all, they demonstrate the beauty, elegance and scope of daylight design.

Download or read book Energy efficient Office Refurbishment written by Simon Burton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-18 with total page 588 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Little has been published on the subject of energy-efficient refurbishment of offices, despite the growing need to refurbish older office building stock throughout Europe, and the global requirement to conserve energy. The book suggests the most energy efficient and environmentally friendly way to refurbish offices using examples of real buildings and designs wherever possible. Each case study includes a building description, the retrofitting strategy, passive and low energy technologies used, energy assessment, comfort and environment assessment, financial assessment, client and market assessment, and conclusion. This practical design manual will be invaluable for architects and engineers specialising in the refurbishment of commercial buildings.

Download or read book Building 2000 written by C. den Ouden and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the second volume of BUILDING 2000, a pilot project of the Commission's R&D programme 'Solar Energy Applications to Buildings' with the purpose of encouraging the adoption of solar architecture in large buildings. In a first volume, a similar series of studies is presented for the building categories: SCHOOLS, LABORATORIES and UNIVERSITIES, and SPORTS AND EDUCATIONAL CENTRES. In this second volume the results of the design studies illustrating passive solar architecture in buildings in the European Community are presented in particular for the building categories: OFFICE BUILDINGS, PUBLIC BUILDINGS and HOTELS AND HOLIDAY COMPLEXES. There was an enthousiastic response from project teams responsible for the design of 32 large buildings with a total construction budget of more than 140 million ECU. The willingness to improve their building concepts by collaborating with R&D-experts was encouraging to the Commission's action in this field. These two books reflect the results of the exchange of information between the actual design practitioners and the European R&D-community. Within the BUILDING 2000 programme 'Science and Technology at the Service of Architecture' became reality. This was not only realised by the various support activities initiated by BUILD ING 2000, but also by the active exchange of ideas by architects and design team members with R&D-workers during the various workshops held within the BUILDING 2000 programme. I highly recommend architects and engineers interested in passive solar architecture and modem day lighting approaches to study these final products of the BUILDING 2000 programme.

Download or read book Designing Emerging Markets written by Giaime Botti and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-05-22 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a unique glance into the process of globalisation of the architectural practice during the last three decades through the lenses of innovative methodologies in architectural history based on quantitative data. Focusing on the golden age of globalisation (1990-2019), it investigates the transnational work of more than one thousand architectural firms of different business models from Europe, North America, and the Asia-Pacific in a broad sample of emerging markets: Mainland China, South-East Asia, India, the Persian Gulf, Sub-Saharan Africa, Russia and Kazakhstan, and Latin America. In the book, different thematic geographies are presented to explore the global scope of the contemporary profession, examine significant projects and the structural conditions behind them, and reveal the debates that such works generated. Understanding the global agency of design firms in emerging markets also becomes a way to study different market conditions, modes of production, and architectural trends comparatively and to highlight the shifts that occurred in the profession over the last few decades. The use of quantitative methodologies produces a novel and updated narrative on contemporary architecture in emerging markets grounded in quantitative data rather than in preassumptions and purely qualitative interpretations. Richly illustrated, this book is further enhanced by an ample set of maps, graphs, and tables to visualise data better.
