Book excerpt: A storm-struck island. A blood-soaked bed. A missing man. In this captivating mystery that's perfect for fans of Knives Out, Senior Investigator Shana Merchant discovers that murder is a family affair. Thirteen months ago, former NYPD detective Shana Merchant barely survived being abducted by a serial killer. Now hoping to leave grisly murder cases behind, she's taken a job in her fiancé's sleepy hometown in the Thousand Islands region of Upstate New York. But as a nor'easter bears down on her new territory, Shana and fellow investigator Tim Wellington receive a call about a man missing on a private island. Shana and Tim travel to the isolated island owned by the wealthy Sinclair family to question the witnesses. They arrive to find blood on the scene and a house full of Sinclair family and friends on edge. While Tim guesses they're dealing with a runaway case, Shana is convinced that they have a murder on their hands. As the gale intensifies outside, she starts conducting interviews and discovers the Sinclairs and their guests are crawling with dark and dangerous secrets. Trapped on the island by the raging storm with only Tim whose reliability is thrown into question, the increasingly restless suspects, and her own trauma-fueled flashbacks for company, Shana will have to trust the one person her abduction destroyed her faith in--herself. But time is ticking down, because if Shana's right, a killer is in their midst and as the pressure mounts, so do the odds that they'll strike again.

Download or read book Alexandria Bay written by Thomas F. Folino and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2004 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alexandria Bay reveals a place that is blessed with extraordinary natural beauty, great fishing, fine resorts, and myriad entertainments. Located in the heart of the Thousand Islands, Alexandria Bay-a preeminent tourist destination for visitors from all nations-owes a great part of its history to its strategic position on the St. Lawrence River, the natural border between Canada and the United States. Surveyed as a potential shipping port in 1804, the area was not settled until after the War of 1812. French nobleman James D. LeRay built the first tavern and warehouse in 1818 to serve nascent shipping and logging industries and named the new settlement after his son, Alexander. By 1848, the first hotel had opened, signaling the birth of a tourist industry. Real prominence, however, began with a visit by President Ulysses S. Grant and family in 1872; the construction of palatial summer "cottages" and the opening of deluxe hotels followed shortly thereafter. Thus evolved the burgeoning business of tourism, which to this day constitutes the primary occupation of the village.

Download or read book Wind Water Waves written by Tom French and published by . This book was released on 2020-05-19 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A collection of nine short stories reflecting on various characters' relationships with "The River." Ranging in time from the early 20th century to the present, Wind Water Waves chronicles how a varied cast of characters' lives are tied to "The River." The collection begins with "The Last of the Old Timers," the story of four individuals pulling a boat in the fall and recollecting their lives together. Four of the stories, told from different points of view, revolve around a group of young adults grappling with the death of a friend while also realizing that their season of youthful play in a summer wonderland is ending as they are forced to limit their time at the river and test their relationships with each other. "With the River and In the Wind" recalls a harrowing trip across the winter ice when a horse-drawn sleigh crashes through, killing the horses and forcing young Ben into an abandoned cabin until the storm passes. Later, he must confront death again when he recovers the body of a close family friend. "The Midnight Lady" recounts the attempt of two brothers to rob a riverside bank by boat in a fog. "Mom Makes River a Garden" reflects a memory that has blossomed with time. The book ends with "River Murmurs," a glance back to an event in the lives of the characters from the first story.

Book excerpt: Thirty years ago, John Keats and his family purchased a two-acre island in the St. Lawrence River, at a time when boats were still lovingly crafted of wood and an island could be had for $4,000. Depending on the elements and on their own resourcefulness, the Keats family thrives in the rhythms of island life-fishing, learning to navigate the river and read the clouds for weather, acquiring an "Indian" view of time, maintaining a house, several boats, and three children on a windswept rock. But more than a book about a single family's adventures, this one is strong witness that we all need islands of our own in the midst of life. Originally published in 1974, Of Time and an Island was chosen as a Book-of-the-Month Club alternate selection.
