Book excerpt: -Is the Bible from Heaven? or is the Earth a Globe?- First published as a 95 page soft cover book in 1890 to expound upon these questions. The 402 page second edition was released in 1893. We release this 160 page modern edition of the second portion of that book, Is the Earth A Globe? for new consideration. In this portion Gleason disproves the arguments generally advanced in favor of the so-called Copernican theory, and then proceeds to demonstrate beyond any reasonable doubt, that the earth is not a globe, that it does not move or rotate, that the sun moves, that the moon is not an opaque or non-luminous body, etc. The writer shows to the satisfaction of common sense that the modern universally accepted and taught theoretical astronomy, which claims the earth to be a globe, revolving around the sun, etc., is based on very weak arguments indeed, and that, on the contrary, it is not at all antagonistic to true science to accept the teachings of the Bible as they read. - Lutheran Witness, April 21, 1891

If, in the course of this work, we shall show, that there is a God, a Divine ruler and maker of all things, and that the book which we call the Bible is His will and word to you and to all; then do not chide me if I shall depart from the text or title of this work to show some of the mistakes of men.'

Book excerpt: A first-hand chronicle of Wolseley’s expedition to end Riel’s Red River Rebellion by a remarkable trio embedded on the mission. In the spring of 1870, two reporters set off from Toronto to cover one of the biggest stories in Canadian history: Colonel Garnet Wolseley’s 1870 expedition to Red River. Over the course of six months, the Daily Telegraph’s Robert Cunningham and the Globe’s Molyneux St. John brought readers along as they paddled and portaged alongside the expedition’s 1,100 troops and 400 voyageurs and guides from the shores of Lake Superior to Fort Garry. But that’s not the whole story. Buried well below the fold was the fact that St. John’s wife — international burlesque star Kate Ranoe — accompanied him and the expedition, and not just as an adventurer. Owing to an accident early on, Ranoe ended up ghostwriting many of St. John’s stories. Embedded is the remarkable story of two reporters and one extraordinary woman as they journeyed to Red River with Colonel Garnet Wolseley and his expeditionary force.

Book excerpt: Gold, Grit, Guns is the first book based on the only four surviving diaries written by miners who sought their golden fortunes on British Columbia's Fraser River in 1858. What was life like for those adventurers? How did their actions impact the creation of British Columbia? George Beam, an Illinois-born settler on Whidbey Island in Washington State, brought hopes of American annexation and distrust of First Nations. He left with a thousand dollars. Otis Parsons of Connecticut made money as a California merchant, then volunteered to build new roads from Harrison Lake to Lillooet. He used them for merchandising. The third miner, an unnamed Upper Canadian, befriended Colonial officials and First Nations people. He earned a thousand dollars, overwintered in Victoria, then drowned in the Cariboo gold rush in the 1860s. George Slocumb from Illinois suffered the fate of most -- increasing poverty and desperation. Background chapters present miners' costs, the first detailed study of 1858 mining practices, and the grim story of how mining culture compromised First Nations life. Gold, Grit, Guns is rich with 115 rarely seen illustrations of life on the Fraser in 1858 as well as maps of the area.

Book excerpt: Many scholars in Bible are interpreting the biblical text from newer interdisciplinary approaches. These disciplines, such as modern literary theory, sociology, and anthropology, have their own technical vocabulary, presuppositions, questions, and methodologies, which a biblical scholar must learn in order to appropriate these approaches for study of the biblical text. This book will introduce the student and the interested teacher to these new approaches, providing bibliography for further study in the method. Moreover, this book will actually apply the method to a particular text in the Book of Judges, so that the reader may see the method "in action."

Download or read book A Radical s Books written by Michael Cyril William Hunter and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 1999 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The library owned by Samuel Jeake of Rye, nonconformist and local activist, was one of the most remarkable of its time. It is of particular importance in that relatively little information has hitherto been available about the ownership of books in the English provinces, or the reading habits of intellectuals who -- like Jeake --were outside London and university circles from which most surviving libraries have come down to us. The collection of some 1500 volumes includes an extraordinary assemblage of radical pamphlets from the English Revolution alongside works of theology, literature, scholarship and science. Other books reflect astrological and magical interests, and the collection also includes a medical library. Jeake's library catalogue, published here, gives much information about titles that are now lost, about the penetration of foreign books into provincial England, and about book prices. The introduction places Jeake's collection in context, and makes a significant contribution to the history of the book in the early modern period; appendices list surviving volumes from the library and give a complete list of the Jeake manuscripts now in Rye Museum.MICHAEL HUNTER is Professor of History at Birkbeck College, University of London; GILES MANDELBROTE is a Curator, British Collections 1501-1800, at the British Library; RICHARD OVENDEN is Deputy Head, Rare Books Division of the National Library of Scotland; NIGEL SMITH is Reader in English at the University of Oxford.

Book The Authors of the Deuteronomistic History

Download or read book The Authors of the Deuteronomistic History written by Brian Neil Peterson and published by Augsburg Fortress Publishers. This book was released on 2014 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peterson engages the identities and provenances of the authors of the various "editions" of the Deteronomistic History. Peterson asks where we might locate a figure with both motive and opportunity to draw up a proto-narrative including elements of Joshua, Judges, Samuel, and the first part of 1 Kings. Peterson identifies a particular candidate in the time of David qualified to write the first edition. He then identifies the particular circle of custodians of the Deuteronomistic narrative and supplies successive redactions down to the time of Jeremiah.
