Book Come Let Us Reason Together

Download or read book Come Let Us Reason Together written by Fleur S. Houston and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2024-01-22 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Oman (1860-1939) was one of the most original and profound theologian-philosophers of his generation. Drawing on previously unpublished archival sources, Houston traces the influences on Oman's Orkney childhood and his student days in Edinburgh University and the Divinity Hall of the United Presbyterian Church. She reviews Oman's subsequent publications during his ministry in Alnwick, and his influential career as professor of systematic theology and college principal at Westminster College, Cambridge. Houston describes the extent to which Oman's view of the world was challenged and affirmed by his experience of the First World War. Oman's theological and religious perspectives, summarized as "reverence, freedom, and sincerity," are rooted in the concerns of daily life. Oman's experiences and reflections are sure to stimulate, challenge, and inspire readers today as much as they did in his own time.

Book Scottish Philosophical Theology

Download or read book Scottish Philosophical Theology written by David Fergusson and published by Andrews UK Limited. This book was released on 2012-10-05 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume concentrates on the period from the beginning of the 18th century to the latter part of the 20th. It is impossible to depict a single school of philosophical theology in Scotland across three centuries, yet several strains have been identified that suggest some recurrent themes or intellectual habits. These include the following: the mutually beneficial cross-fertilisation of the disciplines of philosophy and theology; the tendency to eschew powerful philosophical systems that might threaten to imprison theological ideas; a stress on both the providential limitations and reliability of human reason; a suspicion of reductive theories of a materialist inclination; and a determination to inspect critically the proposals of theology and to place these in positive relation to other disciplines.

Book The Volitional Theory of Causation

Download or read book The Volitional Theory of Causation written by W. J. Mander and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-01-10 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a history of the volitional theory of causation—the philosophical proposal that volition, or will, of the same or broadly the same stamp as that which we experience in our own deliberate and voluntary doings, should be taken as the basis for all causality. Few today know much about the volitional theory of causation, and even fewer have given it any serious attention. But if current opinion regards this suggestion as an unusual one, of minor importance, the historical record shows otherwise, revealing that it is a theory which has been proposed and developed again and again throughout the modern era. Its obscurity is only a recent phenomenon. Starting at the beginning of the Early Modern period and progressing right up the modern times, the historical discussion takes in both supporters and critics, as well as both famous and less well-known figures, to tell the story of a long-running debate which contemporary history of philosophy has forgotten. The principal figures discussed are Berkeley, Hume, Reid, Maine de Biran, Schopenhauer, Mansel, Mill, Martineau, Alexander Campbell Fraser, Borden Parker Bowne, and G.F.Stout, although many other philosophers are also considered. The book ends with a consider of the philosophical merits of the theory.

Book Scottish Philosophy in the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries

Download or read book Scottish Philosophy in the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries written by Gordon Graham and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2015-03-05 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A History of Scottish Philosophy is a series of collaborative studies, each volume being devoted to a specific period. Together they provide a comprehensive account of the Scottish philosophical tradition, from the centuries that laid the foundation of the remarkable burst of intellectual fertility known as the Scottish Enlightenment, through the Victorian age and beyond, when it continued to exercise powerful intellectual influence at home and abroad. The books aim to be historically informative, while at the same time serving to renew philosophical interest in the problems with which the Scottish philosophers grappled, and in the solutions they proposed. This volume covers the history of Scottish philosophy after the Enlightenment period, through the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Leading experts explore the lives and work of major figures including Thomas Brown, William Hamilton, J. F. Ferrier, Alexander Bain, John Macmurray, and George Davie, and address important developments in the period from the Scottish reception of Kant and Hegel to the spread of Scottish philosophy in Europe, America and Australasia, and the relation of Common Sense philosophy and American pragmatism. A concluding chapter investigates the nature and identity of a 'Scottish philosophical tradition'. General Editor: Gordon Graham, Princeton Theological Seminary
