Book Submarine Canyons Human Connections to the Deep Sea

Download or read book Submarine Canyons Human Connections to the Deep Sea written by Awantha Dissanayake and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2023-11-27 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Submarine canyons are some of the most prominent features of the world’s continental margins creating heterogeneity in the terrain, influencing local and global hydrodynamics and often creating hotspots of biodiversity, both on the seafloor and in the water column. Canyon morphology and location on the margin make them the main conduits between the shelf and the deep sea, focussing the transport of sediments, organic matter, nutrients, and increasingly pollutants and litter. The focus of this Research Topic is highlighting human connections to the deep sea. Previous studies have underlined the need for a better understanding of anthropogenic impacts on submarine canyons, and how they fast-track our human footprint to the deep sea. Besides a better assessment of the extent and nature of human activities in submarine canyons, it primarily requires a holistic understanding of submarine canyons as systems, governed by the interplay of geological, sedimentological, oceanographic and biological processes. The goal of this Research Topic, based on the recent INCISE2021 International Symposium on Submarine Canyons, aims to fill that gap by gathering the latest observations of human activities in submarine canyons, the latest insights in submarine canyon functioning, and the latest interpretations on how the two are influencing each other.

Book The Cnidaria Past Present and Future

Download or read book The Cnidaria Past Present and Future written by Stefano Goffredo and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-09-07 with total page 855 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents a broad panorama of the current status of research of invertebrate animals considered belonging to the phylum Cnidaria, such as hydra, jellyfish, sea anemone, and coral. In this book the Cnidarians are traced from the Earth’s primordial oceans, to their response to the warming and acidifying oceans. Due to the role of corals in the carbon and calcium cycles, various aspects of cnidarian calcification are discussed. The relation of the Cnidaria with Mankind is approached, in accordance with the Editors’ philosophy of bridging the artificial schism between science, arts and Humanities. Cnidarians' encounters with humans result in a broad spectrum of medical emergencies that are reviewed. The final section of the volume is devoted to the role of Hydra and Medusa in mythology and art.

Book Bioorganic Marine Chemistry

Download or read book Bioorganic Marine Chemistry written by and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-08 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Burgeoning research into marine natural products during the past two decades has in no small measure been due to an heightened and world-wide interest in the ocean, to the development of new sophisticated computer-driven instrumentation, and to major advances in separation science. Organic chemists have been fully aware that processes in living systems occur in an aqueous medium. Nevertheless, the chemists who have specialized in the study of small molecules have found it expedient to use organic rather than aqueous solvents for the isolation and manipulation of secondary metabolites. The emergence of new chromatographic techniques, the promise of rewarding results, not to mention the relevance of polar molecules to life itself, have contributed to a new awareness of the importance of organic chemistry in an aqueous medium. The first chapter in Volume 2 of Bioorganic Marine Chemistry reflects the growing interest and concern with water-soluble com pounds. Quinn, who pioneered the separation of such molecules, has contributed a review which closely links techniques with results and is based on practical experience. The second chapter, by Stonik and Elyakov, examines the vast chemical literature of the phylum Echinodermata - over one fourth of it in difficulty accessible Russian language publications. The Soviet authors evaluate the data for their suitability as chemotaxonomic markers.

Book Vulnerable marine ecosystems VMEs Coral and sponge VMEs in Arctic and sub Arctic waters Distribution and threats

Download or read book Vulnerable marine ecosystems VMEs Coral and sponge VMEs in Arctic and sub Arctic waters Distribution and threats written by Buhl-Mortensen, Lene and published by Nordic Council of Ministers. This book was released on 2019-04-17 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents results from the NovasArc project that has collated data on the distribution of vulnerable marine ecosystems (VMEs) in Arctic and sub-Arctic waters. Eleven VMEs were identified, based on management goals for coral and sponge communities. Many of the vulnerable marine ecosystems (VMEs) in the study area has a wide distribution. Soft and hard bottom sponge aggregations, hard bottom gorgonians, sublittoral sea pen communities, and cauliflower corals are predicted to cover > 20% of the study area shallower than 1000 meters. Of the anthropogenic activities in the study area bottom trawling represents the main threat to the VMEs. The compilation of trawling activity in the study area shows that fisheries mainly occurs shallower than 1000 meters and that 50 to 60% of the seafloor is not targeted. However, 30% of the seafloor has experienced intermediate to very high fishing effort. In general, the VMEs shows a larger overlap with fishing when the risk analysis is based on areas with an optimal habitat suitability. Using this conservative threshold to model the distribution of VMEs the results indicate that most VMEs have experienced an intermediate to high level of fishing in less than 40% of their distribution area in the whole study area.

Book Marine Natural Products Chemistry

Download or read book Marine Natural Products Chemistry written by D. Faulkner and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the lectures presented at the NATO sponsored conference on "Marine Natural Products" held in Jersey, Channel Islands, U. K., October 12-17, 1976. The intent of the organising committee was to encourage a dialogue between organic chemists who study the metabolites of marine organisms and biolo gists, ecologists, and pharmacologists who study the effects of these metabolites on other organisms. A feature of the conference was the three workshop sessions on chemotaxonomy, applications of marine natural products, and chemical communication. The papers presented at the conference contain a mixture of original research in marine natural products and reviews of some of the more important subjects. The biologists were asked to present papers which could initiate new directions for marine natural products research. Their contributions to the meeting were warmly received by the chemists in the audience. We hope that this volume contains not only past and present research but a suggestion of future research trends. The conference was first suggested by Dr. E. D. Goldberg. The organising committee, Drs. G. Blunden, D. J. Faulkner, W.
