Book Alcohol Fuel

Download or read book Alcohol Fuel written by Richard Freudenberger and published by New Society Publishers. This book was released on 2009-11-01 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dwindling petroleum supplies and growing environmental concerns are significantly impacting the cost of petro-fuel and its infrastructure. The search for alternative fuel sources has led to ethanol, a gasoline substitute that is already in the marketplace as Gasohol and E-85. But large-scale production of corn-based ethanol is controversial as it threatens the world’s food supply. There are alternatives, however: Brazil uses sugar cane, which is up to six times more productive in energy conversion. After the energy crisis of the 1970s, there was a lot of misinformation about the cost of individual ethanol production. In order to achieve energy independence from gasoline, ethanol lends itself to small-scale production, and especially to cooperative ventures in rural communities, often using “waste” feedstock. Alcohol Fuel is a practical, grassroots book that will give readers all the information they need, covering every aspect of making and using ethanol for fuel, including: *Permitting and planning *Budgeting and setup *Sourcing feedstocks *Finding and building distillation equipment *Storage and safety *Practical applications for converting motor vehicles, farm equipment, and space-heating systems The practical, user-friendly information on basic equipment needs, fermentation recipes, and distillation designs will be of interest to readers looking for information, as well as to those ready to make the switch. Richard Freudenberger was research director of Mother Earth News, where he managed the Alcohol Fuel Program and developed solar and renewable solar and energy projects. He is publisher and technical editor of BackHome magazine and lives in Hendersonville, North Carolina.

Book Handbook of Energy for World Agriculture

Download or read book Handbook of Energy for World Agriculture written by B.A. Stout and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 519 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adequate food supplies and a reasonable quality of life require energy - both in commercial and non-commercial forms. This handbook is intended as a reference for individuals who want a comprehensive overview of energy for agriculture, many of whom are located in remote areas with limited library resources. The purpose is to put energy for agriculture in perspective by presenting numerous national and regional examples of energy usage.Since the early 1970s, world petroleum prices have fluctuated from US$3/barrel to more than US$40/barrel in 1981, and then back to one-third of the peak price today. Consequently, the rural sector depends heavily on non-commercial energy sources. Availability of such energy is highly site-specific. This handbook deals extensively with non-commercial energy - its sources, the technologies for converting energy to more useful gaseous and liquid forms, and its ultimate end-uses.Photographs, tables, line drawings and graphs are used extensively. Over 600 references are listed along with agency names and addresses for obtaining further information.

Book High temperature Acid Hydrolysis of Cellulose for Alcohol Fuel Production

Download or read book High temperature Acid Hydrolysis of Cellulose for Alcohol Fuel Production written by John D. Wright and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents parametric analyses of high temperature dilute acid hydrolysis of cellulosic feedstocks for the production of ethanol fuels. The chemical and physical structure of cellulosic feedstocks is described, and their influence on the hydrolysis reactions explained. The rationale for the acid hydrolysis process is presented, and the steps described in detail. Hydrolysis kinetics are discussed in detail and illustrated graphically. Large reductions in the price of ethanol are possible, as improvements are made in presently available processes. Increasing the solids concentration in the reactor feed causes the largest reduction in sales price.
