Book excerpt: Abstract: The proceedings of a 1980 workshop presents 19 expert papers on various aspects of the effect of alcohol (ethanol) intake on in vivo protein biosynthesis. The papers are grouped among 3 principal themes: 1) the effects of alcohol on the biosynthesis of brain protein and nucleic acid macromolecules; 2) the effects of ethanol on eukaryotic protein biosynthesis; and 3) biobehavioral and cellular studies on ethanol effects. The adverse consequences of maternal alcoholism on fetal protein metabolism and the neurological aspects and complications of alcoholism also are addressed. (wz).

Book excerpt: In the Western world, alcohol is the most abused drug. recognized that a majority of patients with cirrhosis do For all the attention being directed toward heroin, co admit to excessive alcohol consumption. Other tissues caine, and marijuana, the favorite mood-altering drug in can also be severely affected, including brain, gut, the United States, as in almost every human society, is heart, endocrine systems, bone, blood, and muscle. A question often raised is, "In what way does an alcoholic alcohol. In nature, the fermentation of sugars is the differ from a nonalcoholic?" Inquiries have focused on major source of ethanol, but how humans first encoun tered it is unclear. It most likely occurred in either psychological make-up, behavioral differences, and socio fermented fruit juices (wine), fermented grain (beer), or economic factors. More recently, however, physical dif fermented honey (mead). Whether the Paleolithic Stone ferences have been delineated. Prior to the development Age man knew of ethanol is undetermined, but it is of various disease entities, chronic ethanol exposure abundantly clear that his Neolithic descendants were results in profound biochemical and morphological familiar with the product of fermentation. Book excerpt: This book is destined to serve as a classic reference source to which researchers can turn for a historical perspective and basic information on the physiology, biochemistry, and pathology of the liver. Major areas covered in the book include histological organization, classification of chemical-induced injury, stages of cellular injury, and xenobiotic metabolism. Chapters discussing the use of biochemical methods to determine liver damage, the effects of various chemical agents of the liver, and hepatocarcinogenesis are also presented. Toxicologists, physiologists, physicians, biochemists, industrial hygienists, and others interested in the effects of chemical agents on the structure and function will find this book to be an indispensable source of information.
Download or read book Liver Pathology and Alcohol written by Roland R. Watson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 622 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alcohol and other drugs of abuse are major contributing factors to liver disease and its pathology. Alcoholic cirrhosis causes thousands of deaths each year in the United States, and encourages liver replacement. A better understanding of the mechanisms of liver pathology will significantly aid basic researchers and physicians in treating and preventing liver damage. This book is designed especially for those researchers wishing to understand alcoholic liver disease. Therefore the role of alcohol in changing nutrition and its nutritional effects on liver disease are reviewed. The generation of free radicals during alcohol use has been found to be an important cause of membrane changes, of cancer development, and of lipid alterations-and thus of liver pathology. In addition to alcohol, other drugs of abuse, including morphine, cocaine, marijuana, and caffeine have also been shown to be significant contributors to liver pathology. The prevalence of drug and alcohol use and abuse today means that liver disease will continue as a major social and medical problem. The explanation of its biological origins cannot fail to help us better understand and treat the disease in the years to come.

This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 613 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In neurosciences one may say, '"All roads lead to Rome. " It seems as though wherever one starts, the course of investigation leads to the same major ques tions about nervous system function and dysfunction. In thinking about what to write in this preface, it occurred to me that it might be best to deal with that with which I am most familiar and to trace to some extent my own '"road to Rome. '' As I look over my work of the last 37 years, it becomes clear to me that it can be epitomized as a search for patterns. What usually began as a single minded devotion to in-depth analysis of one or a small number of variables always has led to questions of how the results might relate to the whole living unit, whether it is cell, tissue, or organism. For a number of years after my discovery in the vertebrate central nervous system of -y-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and the enzyme which forms it, L glutamate decarboxylase (GAD), and the identification of GABA as a major inhibitory neurotransmitter by others, I felt that my laboratory, largely bio chemical, was wandering in the wilderness of the complexities of the vertebrate CNS without definitively coming to terms with problems related to GABAergic transmitter functions and the roles of GABA neurons in information processing.
