Book The Link between Masculinity Alcohol and HIV Aids in Malawi

Download or read book The Link between Masculinity Alcohol and HIV Aids in Malawi written by Aid Norwegian and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2016-04-30 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is common knowledge that HIV is widespread in Malawi as it is in many other countries of Southern Africa. It is also a well-known fact that women suffer most and frequently are blamed the most. Many attempts are being made to address the pandemic and reduce the suffering, and often women are the focus. This book differs in that it looks at the other side, men. It contends that men have to play a major role in the fight, not only by changing behaviour but also by understanding concepts of masculinity and that women may also profit from that.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alcohol use by young people is extremely dangerous - both to themselves and society at large. Underage alcohol use is associated with traffic fatalities, violence, unsafe sex, suicide, educational failure, and other problem behaviors that diminish the prospects of future success, as well as health risks â€" and the earlier teens start drinking, the greater the danger. Despite these serious concerns, the media continues to make drinking look attractive to youth, and it remains possible and even easy for teenagers to get access to alcohol. Why is this dangerous behavior so pervasive? What can be done to prevent it? What will work and who is responsible for making sure it happens? Reducing Underage Drinking addresses these questions and proposes a new way to combat underage alcohol use. It explores the ways in which may different individuals and groups contribute to the problem and how they can be enlisted to prevent it. Reducing Underage Drinking will serve as both a game plan and a call to arms for anyone with an investment in youth health and safety.

Book AIDS and Alcohol Drug Abuse

Download or read book AIDS and Alcohol Drug Abuse written by Dennis Fisher and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-10-30 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: AIDS is the number one health issue facing the nation today. The way in which AIDS relates to substance abuse is explored by drug abuse researchers in this timely volume. A major focus of AIDS and Alcohol/Drug Abuse is on the problems of conducting AIDS research on racial minorities in this country. Bringing together experts in the field, this volume examines the specific obstacles and challenges researchers have faced in assessing and addressing the needs of underserved populations and maps routes and procedures that can improve both research and available health care services. This unique volume also focuses on aspects of HIV infection that have received little attention elsewhere. It includes the first information published in the open literature about intravenous drug use in Alaska. Another chapter highlights some little-known facts that relate substance abuse to HIV infection in the American Indian/Alaskan Native population, among whom--it has been predicted--a devastating epidemic of HIV infection is likely. Problems with prevention, research, and treatment of individuals who are both intravenous drug users and who are infected with HIV are explored. Other chapters look at the transmission of HIV infection--by gay men who are alcoholics and by intravenous drug users. AIDS and Alcohol/Drug Abuse ends with hopeful chapter for AIDS prevention. Readers interested in the relationship of intravenous drug use and HIV infection, particularly among racial and ethnic minorities, will find this to be a practical, readable book. In particular, substance abuse counselors and researchers, and anyone involved in the AIDS prevention movement will find a valuable wealth of information.

Book The American Psychiatric Association Practice Guideline for the Pharmacological Treatment of Patients With Alcohol Use Disorder

Download or read book The American Psychiatric Association Practice Guideline for the Pharmacological Treatment of Patients With Alcohol Use Disorder written by American Psychiatric Association and published by American Psychiatric Pub. This book was released on 2018-01-11 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a major public health problem in the United States. The estimated 12-month and lifetime prevalence values for AUD are 13.9% and 29.1%, respectively, with approximately half of individuals with lifetime AUD having a severe disorder. AUD and its sequelae also account for significant excess mortality and cost the United States more than $200 billion annually. Despite its high prevalence and numerous negative consequences, AUD remains undertreated. In fact, fewer than 1 in 10 individuals in the United States with a 12-month diagnosis of AUD receive any treatment. Nevertheless, effective and evidence-based interventions are available, and treatment is associated with reductions in the risk of relapse and AUD-associated mortality. The American Psychiatric Association Practice Guideline for the Pharmacological Treatment of Patients With Alcohol Use Disorder seeks to reduce these substantial psychosocial and public health consequences of AUD for millions of affected individuals. The guideline focuses specifically on evidence-based pharmacological treatments for AUD in outpatient settings and includes additional information on assessment and treatment planning, which are an integral part of using pharmacotherapy to treat AUD. In addition to reviewing the available evidence on the use of AUD pharmacotherapy, the guideline offers clear, concise, and actionable recommendation statements, each of which is given a rating that reflects the level of confidence that potential benefits of an intervention outweigh potential harms. The guideline provides guidance on implementing these recommendations into clinical practice, with the goal of improving quality of care and treatment outcomes of AUD.

Book Patient Reduction of Uncertainty in HIV AIDS and Alcohol Use Disorders

Download or read book Patient Reduction of Uncertainty in HIV AIDS and Alcohol Use Disorders written by Maurine Adhiambo Orwa and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this dissertation was to extend the application of a communication theory known as Problematic Integration Theory (PIT) to examine the uncertainties experienced in disease-related situations and how those uncertainties are managed. This comparative study utilized two "disease sites" to achieve this objective: Human Immunodeficiency Virus/Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (HIV/AIDS) and Alcohol Use Disorders (AUD). In-depth interviews were conducted with 23 adults (17 men and six women). The study included 12 participants (eight men and four women) who had been diagnosed as alcohol-dependent and 11 participants (nine men and two women) who had been positively-diagnosed with HIV/AIDS. The data were transcribed verbatim and a thematic analysis was conducted. Findings revealed that uncertainties are disease-specific, and the processing of uncertainties related to the causes, diagnoses, and treatment of disease entails problematic integrations of probabilities and evaluations. Further, uncertainty management strategies used by participants were dependent on the type of uncertainty experienced and the type of disease in question. In addition, uncertainty management also involved the use of informal social communication, formal non-social communication, and non-communication-based strategies. The study's conclusions include the result that rather than being a uni-dimensional phenomenon, uncertainty is multidimensional and is experienced in a variety of forms thus influencing the management strategies people use. Communication and non-communication-based strategies are important factors in the management of uncertainty and should be integrated in into communication campaigns.

Book Counseling Chemically Dependent People with HIV Illness

Download or read book Counseling Chemically Dependent People with HIV Illness written by Michael Shernoff and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-02-11 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Counseling Chemically Dependent People with HIV Illness describes frontline clinical treatment of HIV-infected chemically dependent persons. It provides a realistic view of what the daily work with this population is like. Specific, in-depth case examples and material give readers a solid understanding of how to work more effectively with chemically dependent clients infected with HIV. By concentrating on practical instead of theoretical aspects of treatment, this groundbreaking book helps practitioners better understand problems in treatment and shows different ways treatment can be given. Authors discuss and describe methods they use such as group work, drug and AIDS education, treatment teams, and the harm reduction model. Chapters address work with specific patient populations with the dual diagnosis of HIV and chemical dependency and describe treatment in a variety of modalities, such as outpatient, residential, or hospital setting. This timely book also includes helpful background material which introduces the complexities of work with this population through the story of one man’s struggle with AIDS and alcohol and drug addiction. Counseling Chemically Dependent People with HIV Illness also describes medical symptoms and problems of HIV-positive persons which gives non-medical counselors and therapists a preliminary understanding of what their patients may be undergoing physiologically. Other chapters focus on such topics as work with adolescents, short term group work in hospitals, HIV-infected persons on methadone maintenance, effective AIDS prevention with active drug users, and countertransference in professionals working with chemically dependent HIV clients. One of few books to address specifics of counseling and therapy with this difficult population, Counseling Chemically Dependent People with HIV Illness is an extremely valuable and helpful guide for substance abuse counselors, certified alcoholism counselors, psychiatrists, psychologists, and social workers working in the chemical dependency field.
