Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It’s all very well deciding to build the means to save British magick. Top marks for ambitious goals! ...But there are one or two obstacles in the way. For one, said means does not yet exist, and it’ll take a genius to sort that one out. Luckily, we’ve got one of those. We call him Orlando. For another, nothing at all can be built without materials, and no common-or-garden commodities will do. It’s got to be silver. The impossibly rare, virtually extinct kind. This one’s on me, Val and Jay. So it’s down into the depths of history in search of the answer. Could the crackpot alchemists of ages past really turn lead into magickal silver? Everyone says it’s impossible. But if we can’t find a way to conquer the impossible, what’s to become of magick?

Book excerpt: "The Alchemist" is a comedy by English playwright Ben Jonson. It is generally considered Jonson's best and most characteristic comedy; famous literature critic Samuel Taylor Coleridge believed that it had one of the three most perfect plots in literature. The plot revolves around the household of Lovewit, a wealthy landowner. His housekeeper Face and her colleague Subs trade accusations on Subs' alleged involvement in alchemy, to the detriment of the household. The play's clever fulfilment of the classical unities and vivid depiction of human folly have made it one of the few Renaissance plays (except the works of Shakespeare) with a continuing life on stage.

Book The Story of Alchemy and the Beginnings of Chemistry

Download or read book The Story of Alchemy and the Beginnings of Chemistry written by M. M. Pattison Muir and published by Publio Kiadó Kft.. This book was released on with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For thousands of years before men had any accurate and exact knowledge of the changes of material things, they had thought about these changes, regarded them as revelations of spiritual truths, built on them theories of things in heaven and earth (and a good many things in neither), and used them in manufactures, arts, and handicrafts, especially in one very curious manufacture wherein not the thousandth fragment of a grain of the finished article was ever produced. The accurate and systematic study of the changes which material things undergo is called chemistry; we may, perhaps, describe alchemy as the superficial, and what may be called subjective, examination of these changes, and the speculative systems, and imaginary arts and manufactures, founded on that examination. We are assured by many old writers that Adam was the first alchemist, and we are told by one of the initiated that Adam was created on the sixth day, being the 15th of March, of the first year of the world; certainly alchemy had a long life, for chemistry did not begin until about the middle of the 18th century.

  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 2003-08-28
  • ISBN : 1316184285
  • Pages : 527 pages

Download or read book The Alchemy Reader written by Stanton J. Linden and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2003-08-28 with total page 527 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Alchemy Reader is a collection of primary source readings on alchemy and hermeticism, which offers readers an informed introduction and background to a complex field through the works of important ancient, medieval and early modern alchemical authors. Including selections from the legendary Hermes Trimegistus to Robert Boyle and Isaac Newton, the book illustrates basic definitions, conceptions, and varied interests and emphases; and it also illustrates the highly interdisciplinary character of alchemical thought and its links with science and medicine, philosophical and religious currents, the visual arts and iconography and, especially, literary discourse. Like the notable anthologies of alchemical writings published in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, it seeks to counter the problem of an acute lack of reliable primary texts and to provide a convenient and accessible point of entry to the field.

Book Alchemy and Exemplary Poetry in Middle English Literature

Download or read book Alchemy and Exemplary Poetry in Middle English Literature written by Curtis Runstedler and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-03-27 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the different functions and metaphorical concepts of alchemy in fourteenth- and fifteenth-century Middle English poetry and bridges them together with the exempla tradition in late medieval English literature. Such poetic narratives function as exemplary models which directly address the ambiguity of medieval English alchemical practice. This book examines the foundation of this relationship between alchemical narrative and exemplum in the poetry of Gower and Chaucer in the fourteenth century before exploring its diffusion in lesser-known anonymous poems and recipes in the fifteenth century, namely alchemical dialogues between Morienus and Merlin, Albertus Magnus and the Queen of Elves, and an alchemical version of John Lydgate’s poem The Churl and the Bird. It investigates how this exemplarity can be read as inherent to understanding poetic narratives containing alchemy, as well as enabling the reader to reassess the understanding and expectations of science and narrative within medieval English poetry.

Book Alchemists Through the Ages

Download or read book Alchemists Through the Ages written by Arthur E. Waite and published by Cosimo, Inc.. This book was released on 2007-04-01 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alchemy-the word itself conjures up images of charlatans mixing potions and concocting remedies during the Middle Ages in a futile quest to transform lead into gold. But the roots of alchemy can be traced back more than 2,500 years to locales as disparate as Egypt, India, and China, and it was considered serious science until as recently as the 16th century. In this highly regarded volume first published in 1888, Arthur E. Waite examines the lives and works of more than fifty alchemists, from the year 850 through the end of the 18th century. Readers will learn about such renowned figures as Thomas Aquinas, Roger Bacon, and Pope John XXII, and decide for themselves whether alchemy was the true precursor to modern chemistry or a pseudo-science populated by quacks. American-born British author ARTHUR EDWARD WAITE (1857-1942) was co-creator of the famous 1910 Rider-Waite Tarot deck. Among his numerous books are Book of Ceremonial Magic, Devil Worship in France, and New Encyclopedia of Freemasonry.
