Book Rural Australia and the Great War

Download or read book Rural Australia and the Great War written by John McQuilton and published by Melbourne University. This book was released on 2000 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explores the wartime experience of rural Australians during World War I, focusing on the country towns and hamlets of north-eastern Victoria. Demonstrates how the experience of the war was dramatically localised in rural areas, as its every aspect was shaped by individual journalists, councillors or leading local citizens. Details the impact of this intimacy on German inhabitants, who were known as trusted neighbours in rural communities, though reviled as 'the enemy' in the cities. Includes photographs, tables, notes, bibliography and index. Author is head of the history and politics program at the University of Wollongong.

Book Aboriginal Artists of the Nineteenth Century

Download or read book Aboriginal Artists of the Nineteenth Century written by Andrew Sayers and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1994 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Andrew Sayers examines a considerable body of drawings produced by Aboriginal artists between 1803 and 1903. Never before collected as a genre, these works are retained in museums, libraries, or private hands and have rarely been displayed. Often regarded as inauthentic art because of their stylistic borrowings and fluctuations, they enjoy a unique status as products of the interaction between Aboriginal society and the British colonizers. The largest group of drawings comes from the hands of three artists--Tommy McCrae (c1823-1901), William Barak (c1824-1903), and Ulladulla Mickey (c1820-1891), who produced their drawings in the 1880s and 1890s. Visually these drawings are varied, but they possess many of the aesthetic qualities which characterize contemporary Aboriginal art, displaying intense vitality and an acute understanding of flora and fauna.

Book Immigrant Industry

Download or read book Immigrant Industry written by Anoma Pieris and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2024-08-02 with total page 469 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the end of the Second World War, migrants were critical to the spatial making of modern Australia. Major federally funded industries driving postwar nation-building programs depended on the employment of large numbers of people who had been displaced by the war. Directed to remote, rural and urban industrial sites, migrant labor and resettlement altered the nation’s physical landscape, providing Australia with its contemporary economic base. While the immigrant contribution to nation-building in cultural terms is well-known, its everyday spatial, architectural and landscape transformations remain unexamined. This book aims to bring to the foreground postwar industry and immigration to comprehensively document a uniquely Australian shaping of the built environment.
