Book excerpt: This book represents the first multidisciplinary scientific work on a deep volcanic maar lake in comparison with other similar temperate lakes. The syntheses of the main characteristics of Lake Pavin are, for the first time, set in a firmer footing comparative approach, encompassing regional, national, European and international aquatic science contexts. It is a unique lake because of its permanently anoxic monimolimnion, and furthermore, because of its small surface area, its substantially low human influence, and by the fact that it does not have a river inflow. The book reflects the scientific research done on the general limnology, history, origin, volcanology and geological environment as well as on the geochemistry and biogeochemical cycles. Other chapters focus on the biology and microbial ecology whereas the sedimentology and paleolimnology are also given attention. This volume will be of special interest to researchers and advanced students, primarily in the fields of limnology, biogeochemistry, and aquatic ecology.

Book The Volterra Chronicles

Download or read book The Volterra Chronicles written by Judith R. Goodstein and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2007 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The life of Vito Volterra, one of the finest scientists and mathematicians Italy ever produced, spans the period from the unification of the Italian peninsula in 1860 to the onset of the Second World War--an era of unparalleled progress and unprecedented turmoil in the history of Europe. Born into an Italian Jewish family in the year of the liberation of Italy's Jewish ghettos, Volterra was barely in his twenties when he made his name as a mathematician and took his place as aleading light in Italy's modern scientific renaissance. By his early forties, he was a world-renowned mathematician, a sought-after figure in European intellectual and social circles, the undisputed head of Italy's mathematics and physics school--and still living with his mother, who decided the time wasripe to arrange his marriage. When Italy entered World War I in 1915, the fifty-five-year-old Volterra served with distinction and verve as a lieutenant and did not put on civilian clothes again until the Armistice of 1918. By This book, based in part on unpublished personal letters and interviews, traces the extraordinary life and times of one of Europe's foremost scientists and mathematicians, from his teenage struggles to avoid the stifling life of a ``respectable'' bank clerk in Florence,to his seminal mathematical work--which today influences fields as diverse as economics, physics, and ecology--and from his spirited support of Italy's scientific and democratic institutions during his years as an Italian Senator, to his steadfast defiance of the Fascists and Mussolini. In recountingthe life of this outstanding scientist, European Jewish intellectual, committed Italian patriot, and devoted if frequently distracted family man, The Volterra Chronicles depicts a remarkable individual in a prodigious age and takes the reader on a vivid and splendidly detailed historical journey. Book Album Amicorum Albert Dunning

Download or read book Album Amicorum Albert Dunning written by Albert Dunning and published by Brepols Publishers. This book was released on 2002 with total page 816 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea to assemble an Album Amicorum Albert Dunning - a Festschrift to celebrate the 65th birthday of the distinguished musicologist - came from within the Faculty of Musicology of Pavia University. And to accomplish that aim, thirty scholars - colleagues, friends and pupils - have brought together their separate skills. Dunning's long career dedicated to musicology has spanned at least four decades; and throughout, it has had a specifically international character. His studies at the University of Amsterdam were crowned in 1969 with a doctorate and a dissertation entitled Die Staatsmotette: 1480-1555. The work was duly published and immediately established itself as a Standardwerk. There followed the years of research in Vienna and Munich, then those of teaching and research at Tubingen, Syracuse (NY) and Poitiers. A brief interlude in Frankfurt was succeeded by a longer period in his home country at the Vrije Universiteit of Amsterdam, the Rijksuniversiteit of Utrecht and the Netherlands Institute of Advanced Studies of Wassenaar. Since 1988 Albert Dunning has been a professor of History of Modern and Contemporary Music at the University of Pavia's Faculty of Musicology, based in the city of Cremona. The essays collected in the present volume pay a tribute to Albert Dunning's preferred fields of research: the vocal music of the Humanist and Renaissance period and the music of the 18th century, with a special partiality for Mozart and Locatelli. Regarding Locatelli, Dunning has not only issued the fundamental monograph Pietro Antonio Locatelli: der Virtuose und seine Welt, but also directed the (recently completed) critical edition of the great violinist's Opera Omnia. The bulk of this Album Amicorum is therefore devoted to contributions on the music of the Renaissance, Baroque and Classical periods. The occasional incursions into other areas of inquiry are to be understood as a reflection of the broad interests that Dunning has constantly cultivated, especially in his teaching.
