Book Grassfinches in Australia

    Book Details:
  • Author : Mark Shephard OAM
  • Publisher : CSIRO PUBLISHING
  • Release : 2012-08-09
  • ISBN : 0643107886
  • Pages : 335 pages

Download or read book Grassfinches in Australia written by Mark Shephard OAM and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2012-08-09 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is not surprising that Australian grassfinches are highly popular with ornithologists and aviculturists, for included among the species are one of the most beautiful of all birds – the Gouldian Finch Erythrura gouldiae – and one of the most familiar cagebirds – the Zebra Finch Taeniopygia guttata. Despite a scarcity in published works on finches, interest in the species is growing, leading to a dramatic advancement in our knowledge of many species. For example, we have gained new information from field observations carried out on little-known species, including the Blue-faced Parrot-Finch Erythrura trichroa and the Red-eared Firetail Stagonopleura oculata. Significant advances in taxonomic research, largely as a consequence of the development and refinement of biochemical analyses, often involving DNA-DNA hybridisation, have given us a new insight into relationships among species, with some unexpected alliances being determined. Additionally, dramatic changes have taken place in avicultural practices, and in virtually all countries aviculture has taken on a new professional approach, with the most notable results being increased productivity and success with a wider variety of species. After a lapse of almost half a century since publication of Klaus Immelmann’s eminent work on finches, based on extensive field studies, the time has come for a new examination of Australian grassfinches. In Grassfinches in Australia, Joseph Forshaw, Mark Shephard and Anthony Pridham have summarised our present knowledge of each species, and have given readers a visual appreciation of the birds in their natural habitats and in aviculture. The resulting combination of superb artwork and scientifically accurate text ensures that this volume will become the standard reference work on Australian grassfinches. In addition to enabling aviculturists to know more about these finches in the wild as a guide to their own husbandry techniques, detailed information on current management practices for all species in captivity is provided. The book also includes colour plates depicting some of the more common mutations held in Australian and overseas collections.

Book Australia s Favourite Recipes

Download or read book Australia s Favourite Recipes written by Leila McKinnon and published by Pan Australia. This book was released on 2012-11-01 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a specially formatted fixed layout ebook that retains the look and feel of the print book. Australia's Favourite Recipes is the cookbook by Australians for Australians: more than 70 treasured recipes collected from families all around the country. Collated and edited by journalist and television host Leila McKinnon, and with a foreword (and pavlova recipe) by Margaret Fulton, the book features the stories and memories of everyday Australians and their favourite dishes, while celebrating the wealth and diversity of the food we hold dear. Each recipe has been photographed with a sense of evocative nostalgia - native wildflowers decorate the Christmas table, and pages from historical Australian cookbooks are interspersed with collages of the labels and other food memories from our collective childhoods. Every recipe features a charming introduction describing why the dish is of importance to its contributor, how it came to be a special family dish or perhaps a little story about the contributor's grandmother and how she introduced them to the recipe. It is a collection of treasured memories. From the perfect chewy Anzac biscuit and Mum's no-fail spaghetti bolognese to the ultimate lamb souvlaki and lemon delicious, Australia's Favourite Recipes showcases our national cuisine - the dinners, cakes and slices we crave - and shows how the food we eat has changed over the years. Note: Part of the proceeds from sales of the book will be donated from author and publisher to Legacy Australia, a charity that provides services to Australian families suffering financially and socially after the death or incapacitation of a spouse or parent during or after their defence force service.

Book Australian Good Birding Guide NSW ACT

Download or read book Australian Good Birding Guide NSW ACT written by Ted Wnorowski and published by Ted and Alex Wnorowski. This book was released on 2018-08-30 with total page 631 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first of a series of books describing exciting birdwatching locations in Australia. The NSW-ACT Guide is arguably the most comprehensive compendium of birding sites in the State available to date. Not only the standard, well-known locations are covered but also some interesting places known only to a few or newly discovered by ourselves. The book series is intended for both Australian and overseas birders. We hope it will become an essential field companion to a birding enthusiast. In today's time-poor society, the ability to maximise your bird finds in an unfamiliar area in a typically short vacation time available, should be a serious help. For each site, at the minimum, the access details, habitat description, site facilities and key avifauna are addressed. Most data is based on personal records, cross-checked and augmented with the verified sightings reported online. The book is divided into regions including greater Sydney, Hawkesbury, Hunter region, Illawarra, Southern Highlands, South-East NSW, Mid North Coast, Northern Rivers, Western Slopes and Tablelands, Riverina region, Central West NSW, Far West NSW and Australian Capital Territory. The book is richly illustrated with photographs of birds and bird habitats. Book 2: Australian Good Birding Guide: Tasmania Book 3: Australian Good Birding Guide: Victoria
