Download or read book Albertville written by Dennis Burgess and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2004 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beautiful Albertville, Alabama, originally settled in the mid-1800s, is home to a special community that has endured many trials and tribulations throughout its history. The town, once known as Jones Chapel, was named in honor of Thomas Albert by his son-in-law, J.C. Miller, who established the town's first post office. Albertville remained fairly secluded until the arrival of L.S. Emmett in 1881; this pioneer opened a mercantile store and thrust the town into a significant period of growth. Despite the fact that the town experienced its fair share of growing pains-including two fires in 1904 and a cyclone in 1908-its citizens have provided the impetus to keep moving forward. Over 200 vintage photographs from the Albertville archives, family and church collections, and the author's private collection illustrate the successful story of the town of Albertville.

Download or read book Olympic Legacies Intended and Unintended written by J A Mangan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-18 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than a century, the Olympics have been the modern world's most significant sporting event. Indeed, they deserve much credit for globalizing sport beyond the boundaries of the Anglo-American universe, where it originated, into broader global realms. By the 1930s, the Olympics had become a global mega-event that occupied the attention of the media, the interest of the public and the energies of nation-states. Since then, projected by television, funded by global capital and fattened by the desires of nations to garner international prestige, the Olympics have grown to gargantuan dimensions. In the course of its epic history, the Olympics have left numerous legacies, from unforgettable feats to monumental stadiums, from shining triumphs to searing tragedies, from the dazzling debuts on the world's stage of new cities and nations to notorious campaigns of national propaganda. The Olympics represent an essential component of modern global history. The Olympic movement itself has, since the 1990s, recognized and sought to shape its numerous legacies with mixed success as this book makes clear. It offers ground-breaking analyses of the power of Olympic legacies, positive and negative, and surveys the subject from Athens in 1896 to Beijing in 2008, and indeed beyond. This book was published as a special issue of the International Journal of the History of Sport.
Download or read book Historic Alabama Courthouses written by Delos Hughes and published by NewSouth Books. This book was released on 2016-12-01 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alabama’s oldest courthouses have witnessed a panorama of history. Historic Alabama Courthouses resurrects historical facts and images of buildings that were the centers of much of the state’s public life during its first century. Photographs of more than 120 buildings, the earliest that the author could find for each structure, are gathered in this significant volume along with historical, architectural, social, legal, and political accounts of their contributions to the landscape of Alabama. Historic Alabama Courthouses also emphasizes architects and builders. Although the names of many of the principals are unknown, those who can be identified play large roles in the stories told in the book. Not only are the architects’ personal histories important, but also the history of the architecture profession in the state can be observed through the relationships and projects they created. Finally, the stories of Alabama’s courthouse builders and contractors are accounts of technical innovation, entrepreneurship, and sometimes imitation, revealing that fashions spread as widely and rapidly in building design and construction as in any other endeavor.
