Book excerpt: This is a superb collection of intimate and revealing self-portraits by renowned Spanish photographer Alberto Garcia-Alix. Alberto Garcia-Alix is considered one of the finest Spanish photographers of the 21st century. Best known for his striking black and white portraits, Garcia-Alix has also captured self-portraits in nearly all his projects. What is telling about these images is that, while some are not traditional self-portraits as they don't feature the artist himself, instead showing everything from city streets to loved pets, they all capture some of the essence that has made Garcia-Alix one of today's most respected photographers. Autorretrato brings together these self-portraits - many of which are previously unpublished - providing an intimate and revealing look at Garcia-Alix's continued evolution as an artist.

Book Garc a Alix Photographs

Download or read book Garc a Alix Photographs written by Alberto García-Alix and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The hundred and fifty or so pictures that make up this retrospective of the work of Alberto Garcia-Alix (Leon, 1956) illustrate one of the most outstanding careers om the past quarter-century of Spanish photography. His artistic experience unfolds in a sort of poetic narration: that of his own private journey into the depths of the night. His ongoing autobiographical endeavour has driven him to document the chronicle of his time through a set of portraits which often include his own. Three different approaches can be discerned in his vast production. The initial period (1975-1982), to which most of his 35mm. work belongs; the eighties, which evidence the mature style of a sophisticated composer of frames; and the recent nineties, which witness a shift towards an increasingly cold, bare and essential perspective. Projects that reflect the multifaceted and heterodox nature of an artist whose oeurve rooted in the most classical tradition of black and white photography.

Book excerpt: This classic work of analog photojournalism—focusing on the idiosyncratic denizens of an iconic bar in the red-light district of Hamburg, Germany—is now available in a gorgeous new edition that features a tribute by musician and actor Tom Waits. Photographer Anders Petersen was hanging out at a dive bar on the Reeperbahn in Hamburg in 1968 when someone grabbed his camera from the table where he was sitting and started taking pictures. Petersen used the opportunity to photograph the culprit—and the rest of the bar’s motley crew of patrons. The resulting project is one of the most revered photobooks of all time, a celebration of a gritty city at the tail end of the sixties, and the cornerstone of Petersen’s storied career. The images have become classics of their genre; Tom Waits used one for the cover of his legendary album Rain Dogs. Their candidness and authenticity remain as eloquent today as when they were first published in 1978. This sumptuously produced reissue features a new foreword by Waits, and is certain to find a new audience, who will appreciate the stunning analog photography and its elegiac collective portrait of the fringes of society.

Book Juergen Teller

Download or read book Juergen Teller written by Juergen Teller and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For a German soccer enthusiast like Juergen Teller, summer 2014 couldn t have been any better. The German national team guest of honor in Teller s work since 'Nackig auf dem Fussballplatz' (Steidl, 2004) won the World Cup in Brazil, and Teller was passionately there every step of the way.0'Siegerflieger' (literally the victors plane, the affectionate name given to the German team s customized jumbo) unfolds in typical diary-like Teller fashion: we see him enjoying a bratwurst or two, a casual round of chess with the family in his hometown of Bubenreuth, and perhaps one drink too many with his students from the Academy of Fine Arts in Nuremberg. Yet Teller s obsession for soccer (also shared by his son Ed, the covert star of this book) remains center stage, be he watching the final live on TV or welcoming home the triumphant team at the Brandenburg Gate. Teller even went so far as to immortalize the German victory in his very first tattoo, a natural step for soccer fanatics. For the rest of us, we have the exuberant, testosterone-charged Siegerflieger to enjoy.
