Book Energy in Canada

Download or read book Energy in Canada written by Canada. Energy, Mines and Resources Canada and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discussion paper prepared to provide information about Canada's resource potential, the contribution of energy to the Canadian economy, Canada's place in the world energy market, and the outlook for the development of Canadian energy resources. In addition, it provides background information on issues such as energy and the environment, energy security, Canadian ownership of energy resources, energy R & D and energy conservation. It concludes with an indication of some of the key challenges facing the energy sector. The paper was prepared before Canada and the U.S. agreed in principle on a free trade agreement and does not include a discussion of the agreement or its potential impacts on the energy sector.

This book was released on 2014-02-03 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Selected Issues paper analyzes the unconventional energy boom in North America, and its macroeconomic implications and challenges for Canada. The unconventional energy boom has had significant positive effects on Canada’s economic activity and has the potential to contribute even more in the future with the appropriate extension of infrastructure capacity. The findings suggest that although limited exports capacity would result in output losses over the medium term, the potential output gains from a full market access of Canada’s energy products could reach about 2 percent of GDP over a 10-year horizon.

Book Exploring the Role of Blue Hydrogen in Achieving a Net Zero Electricity Generation Sector in Alberta

Download or read book Exploring the Role of Blue Hydrogen in Achieving a Net Zero Electricity Generation Sector in Alberta written by Precious Afolabi and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hydrogen is an energy carrier that could play a significant role in energy transition by displacing use of fossil fuels in the transport, heat, industry, and electricity sectors. For Canada to reach the goals laid out in its recently published Hydrogen Strategy, regionally specific plans are needed that account for the differences in energy resources and markets for hydrogen. While the benefits for hydrogen to play a role in decarbonization have been quantified, its competitiveness in many applications--including in industry and power generation--is debated. The goal of the research paper is to examine the role of hydrogen in the power sector to achieve net-zero emissions in Alberta which could enhance strategical planning of connecting the hydrogen supply to meet the electricity demand in Alberta and Canada. We model the electricity system of Alberta using an open-source linear optimization ESM called TEMOA. To improve the spatiotemporal resolution of the model, the province was disaggregated into six regions that are consistent with existing planning regions set by the system operator. Further, to accommodate the variation in energy demand and renewable energy availability, a 24-hours daily resolution was used for the main seasonal periods in the year. We apply the model to several exploratory scenarios in the paper that could represent a plausible future of low carbon electricity system. The main scenarios include Base Case (BASE), Alberta carbon policy (ACP) and clean electricity standard (CES). The technology options such as conventional power plants with and without carbon capture and storage (CCS), hydrogen power plants, renewable energy plants with storage are explored in all the scenarios. The results show that the Alberta electricity system has more fossil fuel generating capacity in the BASE scenario than in the ACP & CES in 2025, which is consistent with the higher carbon prices in the ACP and CES. In the CES scenario, renewable generation contributes over 61% of annual generation by 2035 and, over the same time period, emissions fall to 11.8 Mt/y as a result of the capacity factor of natural plants approaching zero. Generation in the ACP shows same trend by 2045. With regards to cost implication, ACP and CES scenario is about 12% and 14% higher than BASE respectively. Blue hydrogen does not play a role in the “optimal” lowest-cost electricity future, but Modelling-to-Generate Alternative (MGA) analysis shows that hydrogen-based plants may be part of the portfolio even at a blue hydrogen price of CAD $2kg/H2 ($15.6/GJ H2.). We believe a key driver of these results us the large base of installed industrial cogeneration, to which we assume electricity sector specific climate policy does not apply.
