Book excerpt: Computer: A History of the Information Machine traces the history of the computer and shows how business and government were the first to explore its unlimited, information-processing potential. Old-fashioned entrepreneurship combined with scientific know-how inspired now famous computer engineers to create the technology that became IBM. Wartime needs drove the giant ENIAC, the first fully electronic computer. Later, the PC enabled modes of computing that liberated people from room-sized, mainframe computers. This third edition provides updated analysis on software and computer networking, including new material on the programming profession, social networking, and mobile computing. It expands its focus on the IT industry with fresh discussion on the rise of Google and Facebook as well as how powerful applications are changing the way we work, consume, learn, and socialize. Computer is an insightful look at the pace of technological advancement and the seamless way computers are integrated into the modern world. Through comprehensive history and accessible writing, Computer is perfect for courses on computer history, technology history, and information and society, as well as a range of courses in the fields of computer science, communications, sociology, and management.

Download or read book Fire in the Valley written by Michael Swaine and published by Pragmatic Bookshelf. This book was released on 2014-10-20 with total page 602 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1970s, while their contemporaries were protesting the computer as a tool of dehumanization and oppression, a motley collection of college dropouts, hippies, and electronics fanatics were engaged in something much more subversive. Obsessed with the idea of getting computer power into their own hands, they launched from their garages a hobbyist movement that grew into an industry, and ultimately a social and technological revolution. What they did was invent the personal computer: not just a new device, but a watershed in the relationship between man and machine. This is their story. Fire in the Valley is the definitive history of the personal computer, drawn from interviews with the people who made it happen, written by two veteran computer writers who were there from the start. Working at InfoWorld in the early 1980s, Swaine and Freiberger daily rubbed elbows with people like Steve Jobs and Bill Gates when they were creating the personal computer revolution. A rich story of colorful individuals, Fire in the Valley profiles these unlikely revolutionaries and entrepreneurs, such as Ed Roberts of MITS, Lee Felsenstein at Processor Technology, and Jack Tramiel of Commodore, as well as Jobs and Gates in all the innocence of their formative years. This completely revised and expanded third edition brings the story to its completion, chronicling the end of the personal computer revolution and the beginning of the post-PC era. It covers the departure from the stage of major players with the deaths of Steve Jobs and Douglas Engelbart and the retirements of Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer; the shift away from the PC to the cloud and portable devices; and what the end of the PC era means for issues such as personal freedom and power, and open source vs. proprietary software.

Excerpt: ...under the facts as shown by the record they are in no better position. By the conveyance from Lavini Hampton to Revier, the legal title to the certificate passed to him, and upon the issuance of the patent he took the naked legal title to the land in trust for the use and benefit of the holder of the equitable title. Reed v. West, '47 Texas, 240; Robertson v. Du Bose, 76 Texas, 10. There has been no repudiation of this trust, so far as the record shows, by a sale of the property by Revier or his heirs, or by possession claiming the exclusive ownership of the land. The appellants contend that the record shows possession by them through their tenants. There is no express finding as toipossession. The court found that certain of the defendants are the heirs of Wm. K. Revier, and that the other defendants are tenants of such heirs. The court does not find that such tenants are in possession of the land, or, if in possession, the character of their possession, or when it began. The holder of the legal title not having repudiated his trust, it would seem that the claim of plaintiff could not be defeated on the ground that by his laches it had become a stale demand which equity would not enforce. Robertson v. Du Bose, supra.. The above remarks fairly dispose of all the propositions presented b_v appellants in their brief, and require an alfirm-ance of the judgment. i Affirmed. ox MOTION son ADDITIONAL rrnnmos or mow. The record does not contain a statement of facts. We treated the findings of fact filed by the trial court as the facts of the case. The petition alleges that the defendants entered upon and ejected the petitioners from the possession of the land. The defendant pleaded not guilty and stale demand. Under this condition of the pleading..

Book excerpt: A social historian examines the use of technology in modern U.S. history and offers a different way to group American generations. The G.I. Generation. Silents. Baby Boomers. Gen Xers. Millenials. Generation Z. Every generation has its label and box. But the real question is: Why? Enter GenTech. It’s a whole new way to look at American generations. Instead of the conventional fixed and linear dates for generational cohorts, Dr. Rick Chromey proposes a fresh understanding that’s fluid and more of a loop, rooted to the technology each generation experiences in their “coming of age” years. Since 1900, there has been more technological change than in all of previous combined history. The airplane. The automobile. Radio. Television. Nuclear energy. Rockets. Internet. Cellphones. Robots. Furthermore, there’s a massive cultural shifting unlike anything witnessed since the Dark Ages gave way to the Renaissance, Reformation, Enlightenment, Scientific, and Industrial Ages. Consequently, postmodern generations (born since 1960) have grown up in a new, cyber, wireless, and visual high-tech culture that’s forever changed how we do business, learn, socialize, broadcast, entertain, and worship. It’s technology that shapes us, gives every generation its personality, and seeds who we’ll become tomorrow. GenTech opens a whole new perspective on how to view the world and understand why every generation matters. Praise for GenTech “Whether you’re a technology nerd or wizard, this intriguing book will help you connect the digital dots. You’ll see how technology is profoundly shaping our culture—and you, like it or not. Plus, you’ll discover how technology affects each generation differently, for better or worse.”—Thom Schultz, co-author of Don’t Just Teach…Reach!

Book The Know It Alls

Download or read book The Know It Alls written by Noam Cohen and published by The New Press. This book was released on 2017-11-07 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Included in Backchannel’s (WIRED.com) “Top Tech Books of 2017” An “important” book on the “pervasive influence of Silicon Valley on our economy, culture and politics.” —New York Times How the titans of tech's embrace of economic disruption and a rampant libertarian ideology is fracturing America and making it a meaner place In The Know-It-Alls former New York Times technology columnist Noam Cohen chronicles the rise of Silicon Valley as a political and intellectual force in American life. Beginning nearly a century ago and showcasing the role of Stanford University as the incubator of this new class of super geeks, Cohen shows how smart guys like Jeff Bezos, Peter Thiel, Sergey Brin, Larry Page, and Mark Zuckerberg fell in love with a radically individualistic ideal and then mainstreamed it. With these very rich men leading the way, unions, libraries, public schools, common courtesy, and even government itself have been pushed aside to make way for supposedly efficient market-based encounters via the Internet. Donald Trump’s election victory was an inadvertent triumph of the "disruption" that Silicon Valley has been pushing: Facebook and Twitter, eager to entertain their users, turned a blind eye to the fake news and the hateful ideas proliferating there. The Rust Belt states that shifted to Trump are the ones being left behind by a "meritocratic" Silicon Valley ideology that promotes an economy where, in the words of LinkedIn founder Reid Hoffman, each of us is our own start-up. A society that belittles civility, empathy, and collaboration can easily be led astray. The Know-It-Alls explains how these self-proclaimed geniuses failed this most important test of democracy.
