From the mighty Sahara Desert in the north to the dense equatorial jungles of the Congo and the open grasslands of Southern Africa, Dan turned his biggest dream into reality. Over the course of three years Dan's second major expedition spanned fifty-four thousand miles through thirty-five unique African countries. THE ADVENTURE WAS A THOUSAND TIMES BIGGER THAN HE DREAMED POSSIBLE. After exploring the Pan-American Highway from Alaska to Argentina Dan became hooked on the freedom of global overland travel, and he only wanted more. New languages, exotic foods, stunning landscapes and local people with an entirely different outlook became Dan's everyday life. As the months turned into years, through highlights and despair Dan gained a new appreciation for what it truly means to be alive. Viewing our modern world through African eyes gave Dan a new perspective, and he was pulled in by the endless joy, laughter and kindness at every turn. While the landscapes and wildlife are undeniably breathtaking, it is the natural warmth of the African people that is truly unforgettable. All across the continent Dan was welcomed with love and generosity, and now he will never be the same.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Alaska, Vol. 2: History, Geography, Resources The geographer Gerhard Friedrich Muller during his researches in Siberia about 1750, ransacked the archives of Yakutsk and other East Siberian settlements for records of early explorations. His extracts from them are all that are saved to us of those invaluable reports, the originals of which were long since destroyed by the fires which have repeatedly ravaged the cities of eastern Siberia. Among these extracts is found one relating to the journey of Peter Iliunsen Popofi who was sent to East Cape in January, 1711, with two interpreters, to endeavor to in duce the obstinate Chukchi natives to pay tribute, and to obtain such information about the region as could be se cured. The party returned to the trading post on the Anadyr River in the following September. They had not been able to convince the Chukchi that there was any suffi cient reason for paying tribute, but they brought back, among other items of information, the news that beyond the islands 06 the Chukchi peninsula lay a large conti nent, forested, inhabited, with great rivers, where were a people with tails like dogs, wearing skin clothing, and living upon wild reindeer and sea animals. The learned academician apologizes for recording this fable of the wild Chukchi, which, however, carries with it the confirmation of the story of Popofi's visit since we now know that it is a common practice of the American Eskimo to wear the tail of a wolf or dog at the back of his girdle on cere monial occasions, or while traveling. This is the first authentic mention of the continent east of Bering Strait and its inhabitants, though mention had been made by earlier explorers of accounts by the Chuk chi of the Diomede and St. Lawrence Islands. Book excerpt: Alaska Volume 2By Ella HigginsonA great Russian moved under inspiration when he sent Vitus Behring out to discover and explore the continent lying to the eastward; two great Americans-Seward and Sumner-were inspired when, nearly a century and a half later, they saved for us, in the face of the bitterest opposition, scorn, and ridicule, the country that Behring discovered and which is now coming to be recognized as the most glorious possession of any people; but, first of all, were the gentle, dark-eyed Aleuts inspired when they bestowed upon this same country-with the simplicity and dignified repression for which their character is noted-the beautiful and poetic name which means "the great country."
