Book excerpt: Since Alaska is so large and its options so varied, this guide is organized primarily to help travelers zero in on the activity or activities that most appeal to them. The first ten chapters focus solely on adventure travel, each devoted to a single activity. The five regional chapters that follow focus mainly on the basics in a given area of the state — getting around, shopping, lodging, dining, and entertainment. The objective is not to provide the most information about destinations or attractions, but rather, the most useful information. Any destination or outfitter listed here has made the cut by proving itself a wonderful place to visit or a reliable company with which to do business.

This book was released on 2016-03-01 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alaska is the 49th and largest state in the United States of America. Separated from the rest of the country (the "lower 48") by Canada, Alaska lies on the Arctic Circle. It is still the least densely populated state in the union and for a long time was home to the lowest population. America's final frontier is the size of California, Texas and Montana combined, making it huge in comparison to the rest of the states! Alaska is also home to the highest point in North America and all of the top ten highest mountains in the USA. Across the Bering Strait lies the country of Russia and the continent of Asia. Most cities and villages in the state are accessible only by sea or air. The Alaska Marine Highway System also serves the cities of Southeast and the Alaska Peninsula. Cities not served by road or sea can only be reached by air, accounting for Alaska's extremely well-developed Bush air services-an Alaskan novelty. Alaska is huge. It actually spans what once were five time zones! So big in fact you probably won't scratch the surface of what it has to offer in terms of geography, wildlife, local flavor, or Alaska native culture. You might visit a couple of the regions of the state during your visit. It is quite possible to experience the ancient rainforest of Southeast Alaska, camp in Denali National Park, and kayak among icebergs in Prince William Sound on the same trip. Another option is to focus on a smaller (still huge) region of the state and spend enough time for a better look and then plan a return trip to explore a different region. Alaska does not have to be a once in a lifetime destination. Three weeks in the Inside Passage, traveling from town to town by ferry, is likely to leave you wanting more time if you enjoy hiking, sea kayaking, fishing, wildlife watching, scenery, Native culture, biking. The Kenai Peninsula, south of Anchorage, is another region worthy of an extended stay and is easily accessed from Anchorage. Plenty of public campgrounds make this an extremely affordable do-it-yourself destination if you have a few folks to share the cost of a rental car. An Anchorage, Denali, Fairbanks, Valdez driving loop also offers plenty to see and do for two weeks or more and can be quite affordable with camping and a shared rental car. There are many things to do when traveling to Alaska. If you are the adventurous type then Alaska will be a great place to go. You can go hiking, biking, kayaking, fishing, and expeditions to see the wildlife of Alaska like wolves, whales, moose, and bears. There are also month-long expeditions to the top of Denali. A journey on the Dalton Highway provides a very unique experience. The highway crosses mountains and tundra, the Arctic Circle, and 414 miles of pristine wilderness. Stay up late to see the midnight sun, it's fascinating to watch in the summer when daytime seems endless. Anyone traveling to Alaska should definitely make a trip to Denali; it is absolutely beautiful and the highest point in North America. You can see it from hundreds of miles away when there are clear skies. However, if you get the opportunity to take a trip to see it up close, do it. An ATV ride up the side of a mountain can be one of the most eventful experiences of your trip. On the way up the path, you will see vegetation and wildlife that you can't see anywhere else. Once you finally get to the top of the mountain, you will see one of the most beautiful sites in all of the United States. Digital cameras and photos don't do the mountain's beauty enough justice. The mosaic of blues, whites, grays, and greens will leave you absolutely astonished. Alaska travel guide Alaska guide book travel guide Alaska Alaska guide

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Guide to Alaska: Last American Frontier Scarcely more than a generation ago, well within the memory of many living Alaskans, the news was flashed in 1897 over telegraph wires that the steamer Portland had arrived in Seattle with a ton of gold. Immediately a feverish interest was awakened in a little-known and still largely unexplored possession of the United States - Alaska. Names made familiar during the days that followed - Klondike, Chil koot Pass, Yukon Trail, Nome Beach - and the exploits of those con nected with them - are familiar to every school child and have passed into the written and unwritten folklore of the nation. Even more important, and certainly no less dramatic, is the less known Alaska of today - the Alaska of graveled automobile roads, of airplanes, used as casually by Alaskans as are taxis in continental United States, of giant gold dredges, of great fishing fleets, of farms with the latest in modern equipment, of homes set in frames of flowers and surrounded with vegetable gardens, of large shops, theaters, churches, schools, clubs, newspapers, and America's farthest-north university. Alaska may be the United States' last frontier, but in its application of tomorrow's techniques to present - day mining and agri culture, in its revolutionary use of air transportation, in the energy and inventiveness of its citizens, Alaska deserves no less the name of the United States' foremost frontier. Readers with vague schoolroom ideas of Alaska as a frozen land of ice and snow, the principal occupa tions of whose inhabitants are panning gold and hunting bear, may, as they turn these pages, find themselves deprived of many cherished illusions, but they will be compensated with some of the most sig nificant episodes in the stirring story of America. I am happy to sponsor this volume, in the hope that it not only will bring to residents of continental United States a renewed interest in their fellow-americans of Alaska, but will encourage them to see with their own eyes Alaska's physical grandeur and its hardly less remark able technological development.
