Book excerpt: Excerpt from Nome Nuggets: Some of the Experiences of a Party of Gold Seekers in Northwestern Alaska in 1900 This caused a great deal of excitement among the employes of the stores at St. Michael. In five days many had secured dog teams and provisions, and were on their way over the ice to the new land of gold. In three weeks the place was nearly deserted, the same being the case with other small camps nearby. The news spread to the villages along the Yukon. Soon scores of dog teams, laden with provisions, passed through St. Michael, en route for this icy Eldorado. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: * Explores both geologic and human history of the region * Includes a sampling of literature inspired by the Brooks Range * Examines past, present, and future conservation efforts in this extraordinary place Not just the ultimate mountains for their northernmost location on the North American continent, the Brooks Range also is one of the world's last, great, unspoiled wildernesses. A land of environmental and cultural extremes, its impressions on those who visit or reside there is as far-ranging as humankind's effect on the Range itself. Austere, mystical, and stunningly beautiful, the psychic and corpreal influence of the region is inescapable. Alaska's Brooks Range: The Ultimate Mountains looks at the many facets that make this region so provocative and so worthy of our strongest preservation efforts. It explores the geologic origins of some of the most desolate beauty on earth; the native inhabitants-both man and animal-whose age-old methods of survival have been altered by the winds from the lower 48; and the human history, from the early British military explorers to gold panners to the geographers who first mapped the Arctic wilderness. The story of Bob Marshall traces his influence as the father of the Arctic conservation movement, and Range Writings offers a sampling of literature inspired by the Brooks Range experience. Finally, this book takes a hard look at past, present, and proposed conservation efforts in the Brooks Range, because there is much more at stake than land and wildlife in this last frontier. The future of humankind is here, where the rarity of existence in pristine country is an everyday reality, where we can learn how best to fit in without destroying the scheme of life so exquisitely evolved on this planet. Alaska's Brooks Range is an affectionate portrait of an untamed territory-a land that challenges the limits of its natural inhabitants and those of human spirit and providence.

This book was released on 2018-09-15 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global warming, overpopulation, the biodiversity crisis... the world we live in is in a state of emergency. This is not just an ecological problem; it is an economic problem as well. The state of the natural world impacts – and is impacted by – human society. Our actions have long-term consequences, so we must be wise in the choices we make, not least in the companies/practices we support through our investment decisions. In The Ethical Investor’s Handbook, author Morten Strange connects the dots, to show how economics and finance play a direct role in perpetuating this crisis. What can we as individual investors do to avoid wrecking the Earth while growing our wealth? How can we navigate the capital allocation space without compromising our ethical values? It can be done – some of the Big Boys have done it – and this invaluable new book shows us how. Delving into topics such as alternative energy sources, conservation and natural capital, The Ethical Investor’s Handbook offers practical advice on how to build a sustainable green portfolio that reaps handsome returns. There are pitfalls and stranded assets to avoid, but also new opportunities if you know where to find them. Do-gooders, with the right understanding of the issues at hand, can make a good buck!

Book The Painting on the Window Blind

Download or read book The Painting on the Window Blind written by Neil Davis and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2011-01-07 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the story of a search for information about a Civil War painting unique in several respects: it is on an old-fashioned roll-down window blind, is the only known surviving work of previously unknown soldier artist John H. G. Hood, and is the only known one of a Union soldier in a Confederate uniform. The man on horseback in the painting, James A. Hensal, was a dashing figure who during the war was sentenced to death by court-martial after shooting and killing his superior officer. For reasons having to do with his exploits, Hensals execution was never carried out and he later rose to become chief of scouts for Union General Grenville Dodge. Speaking of Hensal, Dodge said, He was the bravest man I ever knew. The painting now resides at the Guthrie County Historical Village in Panora, Iowa, the location where the painting was executed and where both John H. G. Hood and James A. Hensal lived after the war.
