Book Innovation in the Forest Products Industry

Download or read book Innovation in the Forest Products Industry written by Abra Hovgaard and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Because there is a lack of innovation research in the forest products industry and innovative activities in the industry are not well documented, this study attempted to fill that void. The objectives of this study were to understand the process and definition of innovation in the forest products industry, identify the constraints on innovative activities, identify resources that would improve innovation in forest products companies, compare the innovation environments in Alaska and Oregon, and provide a benchmark study for innovation in the forest products industry.‍?‍?This study revealed that there are several aspects of innovation in the forest products industry. In addition, the innovation process is a combination of semiformal development stages, trial and error, intuition, and luck. A variety of factors constrained companies from being more innovative, including government regulations, shipping and labor costs, lack of cash flow, raw material characteristics, marketing expertise, and raw material supply. There do not appear to be any resources that would be helpful to forest products companies, at least none that the interviewed companies could recommend. Offering companies the chance to exchange ideas and network is the most valuable resource available.‍?‍?The innovation environments in Alaska and Oregon are somewhat similar yet different in the marketing tactics employed and the techniques used to obtain market information.‍?‍?Furthermore, the type of innovation projects that each region focuses on differs, as does the actual process used to develop innovations. Future research should focus on completing a quantitative component to this study, developing short courses or 1-day seminars, identifying factors that contribute to innovation success and failure, investigating why the forest products industry is not innovative by nature, and exploring the external acquisition of innovation in the forest products industry.

Book Trends in Global Shipping and the Impact on Alaska s Forest Products

Download or read book Trends in Global Shipping and the Impact on Alaska s Forest Products written by Joseph Roos and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2015-02-14 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the closing of the pulp mills in Sitka and Ketchikan, the relatively small sawmills in southeast Alaska have been producing factory and shop lumber and specialty products (Brackley and Haynes 2008) that require a supply of old-growth timber. Dimension lumber is a byproduct of these mills. One of the major issues facing southeast Alaska's sawmills is securing a continuing supply of timber. According to a recent sawmill processing-capacity study, southeast Alaska's forest products industry was estimated to be using approximately 13 percent of mill capacity (Brackley and Crone 2009). This report shows that there is ample processing capacity to increase supply to Asian markets. However, there needs to be a steady timber source to supply southeast Alaska's mills. Demand for Asia's forest products is growing faster than that for North America's, presenting an opportunity to use Alaska's excess mill capacity, if the producers recognize the requirements of the Asian markets.

Book The Forest Ecosystem of Southeast Alaska

Download or read book The Forest Ecosystem of Southeast Alaska written by Oliver Keith Hutchison and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Southeast Alaska has 11.2 million acres of forest land, of which 4.9 million acres are considered commercial. This commercial acreage supports 166 billion board feet of sawtimber. These primarily old-growth stands of Sitka spruce and western hemlock are supporting a growing wood products industry that ranks first in the southeast economy and third in the State. This report summarizes current knowledge of the timber resource (areas, volumes, growth, mortality, quality, productivity, and trends) from the initial inventory, a partial remeasurement, and a second inventory now in progress. Historical data of wood products use, output, value, and markets are given and discussed. The report gives sources for much published and unpublished information for those who need to pursue these subjects more completely.

Book Nontimber Forest Product Opportunities in Alaska

Download or read book Nontimber Forest Product Opportunities in Alaska written by and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nontimber forest products from southern Alaska (also called special forest products) have been used for millennia as resources vital to the livelihoods and culture of Alaska Natives and, more recently, as subsistence resources for the welfare of all citizens. Many of these products are now being sold, and Alaskans seek additional income opportunities through sustainable harvest and manufacture of such forest resources. We discuss the unique legal, regulatory, land tenure, geographic, vegetation, and climatic context that southern Alaska presents for marketing nontimber forest products; summarize the various species and types of products being harvested; and consider the marketing challenges and opportunities new entrepreneurs will encounter. The information and resources we provide are intended to enhance income opportunities for all Alaskans, while sustaining the organisms harvested, respecting traditional activities, and ensuring equitable access to resources.
