Book excerpt: This report summarizes the 2015 commercial salmon fisheries and personal use fisheries, the 2014 subsistence fisheries, and the 2015 salmon escapements of the Alaska Peninsula, Aleutian Islands, and Atka-Amlia Islands Management areas. The 2015 commercial salmon harvest (including fish retained for personal use) in the Alaska Peninsula and Aleutian Islands (Area M) consisted of 54,402 Chinook Oncorhynchus tshawytscha, 5,936,979 sockeye O. nerka, 323,148 coho O. kisutch, 16,699,746 pink O. gorbuscha, and 867,441 chum salmon O. keta. The total annual exvessel value was approximately $27,419,886. No harvest occurred in the Atka-Amlia Management Area (Area F) in 2015. In 2014, a total of 173 subsistence permits were issued in the Alaska Peninsula Area, and an estimated 12,585 subsistence salmon were harvested, which includes 50 Chinook, 8,620 sockeye, 1,513 coho, 1,657 pink, and 708 chum. In the Unalaska District 249 subsistence permits were issued and an estimated 3,693 subsistence salmon were harvest, which includes 2 Chinook, 2,690 sockeye, 400 coho, 319 pink, and 12 chum salmon. Permits from 2015 are still being returned and will be reported next year. The 2015 North Alaska Peninsula Chinook salmon escapement of 11,545 fish was well below the most recent 10-year average (2005-2014) of 17,351 fish. The total 2015 sockeye salmon escapement for the Alaska Peninsula of 1,472,070 fish was above the 10-year average of 1,106,831 fish. The North Peninsula sockeye salmon escapements (1,375,960 fish) met or surpassed most escapement goals and was above the 10-year average of 1,033,560 fish. The South Alaska Peninsula sockeye salmon escapement of 96,110 fish was above the most recent 10-year average of 73,356 fish. Limited aerial surveys were flown for coho salmon on the Alaska Peninsula, therefore total estimated escapements were not calculated. The South Alaska Peninsula pink salmon estimated escapement of 7,820,800 fish was above the 10-year average of 2,573,510 fish. The entire Alaska Peninsula chum salmon escapement of 1,185,414 fish was above the most recent 10-year average of 892,202 fish.

The total 2014 sockeye salmon escapement for the Alaska Peninsula of 1,213,822 fish was above the 10-year average of 1,150,918 fish. The North Peninsula sockeye salmon escapements (1,176,152 fish) met or surpassed most escapement goals and was slightly above the 10-year average of 1,059,243 fish. The South Alaska Peninsula sockeye salmon escapement of 37,670 fish was well below the most recent 10-year average of 91,675 fish. Limited aerial surveys were flown for coho salmon on the Alaska Peninsula, therefore total estimated escapements were not calculated. The South Alaska Peninsula pink salmon estimated escapement of 1,343,880 fish was below the 10-year average of 3,061,463 fish. The entire Alaska Peninsula chum salmon escapement of 559,726 fish was well below the most recent 10-year average of 952,964 fish.
