Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Alaska and the Panama Canal For Alaska we paid Russia for the Panama Canal Zone we paid the Panama Republic These were bargain prices, the sums paid being insignificant as com pared to the value of the lands, the one being small, but as important as any piece of ground of equal size upon the globe, the other magnificent in area and containing wealth many times greater in amount than the price we paid for it. For years Alaska has been a particularly interesting country to me, but after miles of travel in this vast Northern Territory of ours, I was more than ever impressed with its great resources, and the further fact that our governmental policy was crippling and restricting its proper and natural development. I fully believe that Alaska should be made into a colonial possession and not remain a Territory. I also believe that our Government should not engage in railway construction in Alaska, where failure can be the only result. It has seemed to me that not only was Alaska in itself worth writing about, but that political obstructions that have been placed in the path of its progress ought to be removed. My reasons, I believe, will be found good and sufficient by readers of the chapters on Alaska that follow. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Alaska and the Panama Canal Alaska and the Panama Canal Zone, one lying against the Arctic Ocean and the other in the tropics, one under-laid with perpetual ice and frost, and the other overlaid with perpetual verdure. These are among our most valuable outlying possessions. With these registering the present limits of our country north and south, and with the Philippines in the Orient and Porto Rico in the Atlantic marking our boundaries east and west, the commanding magnitude of our nation is made plain. For Alaska we paid Russia $7,200,000, for the Panama Canal Zone we paid the Panama Republic $10,000,000. These were bargain prices, the sums paid being insignificant as compared to the value of the lands, the one being small, but as important as any piece of ground of equal size upon the globe, the other magnificent in area and containing wealth many times greater in amount than the price we paid for it. For years Alaska has been a particularly interesting country to me, but after 8,000 miles of travel in this vast Northern Territory of ours, I was more than ever impressed with its great resources, and the further fact that our governmental policy was crippling and restricting its proper and natural development. I fully believe that Alaska should be made into a colonial possession and not remain a Territory. It has seemed to me that not only was Alaska in itself worth writing about, but that political obstructions that have been placed in the path of its progress ought to be removed. My reasons, I believe, will be found "good and sufficient" by readers of the chapters on Alaska that follow. As for the Panama Canal Zone and the great Canal itself, few things on earth so entirely justify description. Book The United States and the Panama Canal Classic Reprint

Download or read book The United States and the Panama Canal Classic Reprint written by Axel Gustafson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The United States and the Panama Canal If constructed with the goodwill and guarantee of the great commercial nations, the canal cannot fail to become a blessing to the world's commerce and a great financial success. Most of the rapidly increasing trade between Europe and the Pacific shores, would prefer a passage - of at the most but two days' length - through the canal, assisted largely by the gulf stream, in employing that route and saving three thousand miles, to the tedious, stormy and dangerous rounding of Cape Hem. The yearly increasing trade of Japan and China with the East Coast of the Americas, with Cuba and the West Indies, as well as with a great portion of Europe, would largely patronize the canal, and the greater portion of the traffic between the Atlantic and Pacific shores in both Americas would find the Ist canal route advantageous above all others. Book The Panama Canal

Download or read book The Panama Canal written by Lindon W. Bates and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-12 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Panama Canal: System and Projects The Panama Canal is an undertaking of the vastest meaning to America, commercially and nationally. Its construction should be so correct as to leave nothing for present regret or future challenge. It becomes in some measure the duty of every engineer who cherishes his ideal for this great public work to break his silence and reserve if he perceives that in any vital degree or at any remediable point the Canal seems failing Of the highest that it can achieve. No one knows more intimately the elements, no one knows more profoundly the difiiculties, inherent in this vast problem, than the eminent men, French and American, who, from the inception in 1879 all the way to to-day, have studied and planned by the best in them to solve its perplexities. Let praise go to them unstinted, for this is their smallest due. Believing profoundly, though reluct antly, that the announced methods of solution are not such as to secure to the American people the best, the safest and the most enduring Canal, the writer feels that he would be faithlesscto his citizenship did he not state so. Knowing further that there exists a more scientific system, it has become his duty as. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Americans in Panama Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Americans in Panama Classic Reprint written by William Rufus Scott and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-24 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Americans in Panama Canal requires that a writer not merely View the object which he describes, but that he actually become a part of the mechanism that is giving it form. He may thus practically illuminate observation with experience, and so vivify the object in his own thought, that his attempt to present it to others will be a close approximation of the truth. In the five months the author spent in Panama, he was for slightly more than three months an employee of the Isthmian Canal Commission, living the routine life of a canal employee. He discovered that, had he followed the usual method of coming into the Canal Zone on one steamer, taking notes, and leav ing on the next steamer, he would have missed many fundamental facts, which absolutely must be known if a really trustworthy account of the greatest task of the age is desired. Book A Trip Panama Canal Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Trip Panama Canal Classic Reprint written by Avery and Garrison and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-12-22 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Trip, Panama Canal The original design was to include in its pages a record of all the events transpiring in the building of the Panama Canal of passing note from the early French days to the present time, and give within these pages 400 views. The subject was found to be an inexhaustive one and to give proper representation of the great engineering feat would require more than the number first contemplated. In this col lection is offered not 400 views, as promised, but 700 views, besides a complete resume of the work of each of the depart ments and divisions, which make it possible to touch on every phase of the canal construction, leaving out nothing of public interest. It is thus possible to assert that A trip - panama canal is the most complete and exhaustive book of its kind ever produced on the canal. It has been the constant endeavor to consistently observe the plan originally outlined of starting from the Atlantic side and showing the views of the canal in sequence to the Pacific. This principle has been faithfully carried out. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. In supplying this highway the United States has conferred a benefit upon mankind which has few equals in human history, the full measure of which time alone can reveal. Great wars change the map of the world by their victories, but few have made more radical and far reaching changes than will follow this momentous victory of peace - a victory for human welfare and progress. The Vision of Columbus. - The Canal realizes the dream of Columbus in supplying by the hand of man that hidden strait which he sought so eagerly in the firm belief that it had been created by the Almighty as the pathway of the seas to the Indies. If he were living to-day and could visit the Atlantic entrance to the Canal he would find it placed in an inlet of the same shore which be scanned so closely nearly four centuries ago as he sailed along it in his search for the hidden strait. Balboa and Magellan - His belief remained unshaken for many years after his death, and the search was continued by navigators from various nations of the old world who had been inspired by his discoveries to follow in his wake.
