Book Tell Atchana Alalakh

Download or read book Tell Atchana Alalakh written by Kutlu Aslihan Yener and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 570 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The excavations at Tell Atchana (Alalakh) are a part of long-range, broadly-based archaeological investigations in the Turkish state of Hatay's Plain of Antioch, today called the Amuq Valley. Tell Atchana is located at the southern center of the valley close to the major westward bend of the Orontes River and was for nearly a thousand years the capital of a small Bronze Age principality called variably Alalakh and Mukish. This volume presents the major new archaeological campaing from 2006-2010, which was designed to revisit the phasing and dating of previously excavated strata, to explore untouched areas of the site, to establish a typology and seriation of local artifact types, and to study local cultural and political history in the dynamic and international Late Bronze II period. The Alalakh Excavations project's ongoing research on chronology, political history, material culture, city landscapes, international relations, and many other topics is beginning to form a coherent picture of ancient Alalakh. Coming into focus is a small city with ancient roots that dared to play a hard game of territorial checkers with its larger LB II neighbor kingdoms and empires. Today Alalakh continues to engage and amaze as excavations and analyses reveal surprise after surprise. The Alalakh Excavations project has taken great care to include a wide variety of scholarly voices and opinions and to challenge preconceptions and conventional wisdom at every turn. In keeping with the tradition of sound methodology and perseverance begun by Woolley, and the interdisciplinary and international spirit of the Alalakh Excavations project, this volume now proudly presents the excavation results of LB II strata from 2006-2010.

Book Late Bronze Age Tell Atchana Alalakh

Download or read book Late Bronze Age Tell Atchana Alalakh written by Amir Sumakaʼi Fink and published by BAR International Series. This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study re-visits the Late Bronze Age stratigraphy, chronology and history of Tell Atchana (Alalakh, Syria) as recorded by Sir Leonard Woolley in the 1930s and 1940s. The author offers both a detailed analysis of the material culture of Late Bronze Age Alalakh and a political history of the region following the destruction of the Level IVW palace. Step one was to understand the way in which the plans of Tell Atchana that Woolley published are to be interpreted, and the implications of so doing. Next the author establishes the correct location, absolute and relative, of the Level IW temples. After this follows an analysis of the stratigraphy of the Levels IV-0W temples. Based on the finds in each of the later temples, new data afforded a detailed study of the find-spot of the statue of Idrimi, now newly attributed to Level IVBF, the first half of the fourteenth century BCE, probably not more than a few decades after the death of Idrimi, king of Alalakh. The same stratigraphic analysis scheme was projected on all the features and structures of Levels V-0W, making the author's approach to Late Bronze Age Alalakh significantly different than that of the previous literature, and significantly revises Woolley's 1955 Final Report and later studies. Detailed new phase plans for Levels VA-IBF accompany this study and the work concludes by presenting consequential material culture data that leads to a proposed absolute chronology of the relevant strata at Alalakh, accompanied by a discussion of the history of Alalakh in the Late Bronze Age. It is hope that this volume will help pave the way for future investigation, and that its implications will be considered not only for Alalakh and Mukis, but for the Late Bronze Age Levant as a whole.

Book Angels

Download or read book Angels written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1990s alone, more than 400 works on angels have been published, adding to an already burgeoning genre. Throughout the centuries angels have been featured in, among others, theological works on scripture; studies in comparative religions; works on art, architecture and music; philosophical, sociological, anthropological, archeological and psychological works; and even a book length psychoanalytical study of the implications that our understanding of angels has for our understanding of sexual differences. Access to the multitude of angelic works is simplified with this bibliography, which lists 4,355 works, arranged alphabetically by author. Each entry contains a source for the reference, often a Library of Congress call number followed by the name of a university that holds the work. Key words pertaining to the works are included when available, and over 750 of the entries are annotated. Extensive indexes to names, subjects and centuries provide further utility.
