Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on documentation originating in the environmental sciences, history of science, philosophy and art, Architecture of Nature explores the materiality and the effects of the forces at play in the history of the earth through the architect's modes of seeing and techniques of representation. This book presents the research work developed for the past eight years in the Advanced Research graduate studio "Architecture of Nature/ Nature of Architecture," created and directed by Diana Agrest at the Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture of the Cooper Union. Architecture of Nature departs from the traditional approach to nature as a referent for architecture and reframes it as its object of study. The complex processes of generation and transformations of extreme natural phenomena such as glaciers, volcanoes, permafrost, and clouds are explored through unique drawings and models, confronting a scale of space and time that expands and transcends the established boundaries of the architectural discipline.

Download or read book A Feeling of History written by Peter Zumthor and published by Scheidegger and Spiess. This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While he was working to complete the Allmannajuvet Zinc Mine Museum in southern Norway in 2016, Swiss architect Peter Zumthor asked Norwegian architectural historian Mari Lending to engage in a dialogue about the project. In meandering, impressionistic style, and drawing on their favorite writers, such as Johann Peter Hebel, Stendhal, Nabokov, and T. S. Eliot, their exchanges explore how history, time, and temporalities reverberate across Zumthor's oeuvre. Looking back, Zumthor ponders on how a feeling of history has informed his attempts at emotional reconstruction by means of building, from architectural interventions in dramatic landscapes to his design for the redevelopment of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, which conceived the building on a suitably grand urban scale. This small, beautifully designed book records the conversation between Zumthor and Lending, accompanied by photographs taken by the renowned Swiss architectural photographer H l ne Binet. The resulting book is a surprisingly revelatory view of one of the most interesting and restlessly creative architects of our era.

Book excerpt: Jafar Tukan: Poetry in Stone is the first in depth study of the life and work of the late Palestinian master Jafar Tukan, who was inarguably one of the most influential architects in both his adopted nation of Jordan as well as throughout the Middle East. For the first time, the full impact of his attempt at raising the professional standards of his entire region has been recorded. Through this process he completely altered the design aesthetic of his home territory of Amman over the course of his remarkable career. As a result, the image of his homeland and its capital city has been irrevocably changed. That feat has been accomplished through a wide variety of building types, including mosques, private residences, housing projects, hotels, recreational facilities, museums, commercial complexes, office buildings, embassies, banks, and universities. Jafar Tukan demonstrates an unparalleled skill at maintaining the delicate balance between past, present, and future, tradition and technology, and rationality and passion, to an extent not found in the work of any other Muslim architect of his time.

Book excerpt: This book offers a critical look at the territory that today forms the state of Israel and the lasting historical role of agriculture, which sprang from the Neolithic revolution in the Middle East, had for a wide range of aspects of human social and ecological development. Topics considered include agriculture's role in territorial appropriation and domestication, in structuring the development of urbanization, in creating a national homeland narrative for the Jewish state, and in changing the climate. Israel Lessons explores in particular the three major types of Israeli agricultural development: vernacular Palestinian/Bedouin, socialist utopian Kibbutz/Moshav, and contemporary high-tech desert farming. Presenting findings through text matched to striking images, graphics, and maps, and featuring proposals for architectural intervetions, it demonstrates how facts and narratives related to agriculture and the climate crisis are intertwined with geopolitics and sectarian ideals of an earthly paradise.

They have investors, budgets, schedules and the desire to deliver their own vision of service and cuisine. Each design project is a journey to discover the soul of each project--to tell its story in an appropriate tone of voice that compliments each chef's vision."--Provided by publisher.

Book Islamic Architecture of Deccan India

Download or read book Islamic Architecture of Deccan India written by George Michell and published by Antique Collector's Club. This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The buildings erected in the Deccan region of India belonged to a number of pre-Mughal kingdoms that reigned in the Deccan from the middle of the 14th century onwards [to the 18th century]. The monuments testify to a culture where local and imported ideas, vernacular and pan-Islamic traditions fused and re-interpreted, to create a majestic architectural heritage with exceptional buildings on the edge of the Islamic world. Many are still standing - yet outside this region of peninsular India, they remain largely unknown.General publications on Indian Islamic architecture usually devote a single chapter to the Deccan. Even specialist monographs can only cover a portion of the region, due to the sheer number of sites. While it is impossible to encompass the full breadth of the subject in a single volume, this book aims to embrace the visual diversity of the Deccan without sacrificing the rigour of academic study. Structures of historical or architectural significance are placed in their context, as the authors discuss building typologies, civic facilities and ornamental techniques, from plaster and carved stone to glazed tiles and mural painting. A chapter is dedicated to each principal Deccan site, interweaving the rise and fall of these cities with a pictorial journey through their ruins, and each building is accompanied by an overhead plan view.

Download or read book Our Voices written by Rebecca Kiddle and published by Oro Editions. This book was released on 2018-05-15 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our Voices: Indigeneity and Architecture is an exciting advance in the field of architecture offering multiple indigenous perspectives on architecture and design theory and practice. Indigenous authors from Aotearoa NZ, Canada, Australia, and the USA explore the making and keeping of places and spaces which are informed by indigenous values and identities. The lack of publications to date offering an indigenous lens on the field of architecture belies the rich expertise found in indigenous communities in all four countries. This expertise is made richer by the fact that this indigenous expertise combines both architecture and design professional practice, that for the most part is informed by Western thought and practice, with a frame of reference that roots this architecture in the indigenous places in which it sits.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book for people to dip into, as they would walk in and out of the room of a dinner party and embrace their interests. Before Information Architecture, before the rules on how to organize information, before you learn grammar, before you work hard at expanding your vocabulary and go through the exercises of parallel meanings of things as using a Thesaurus and as one writes papers in class, before any learning one must understand. Understanding Understanding precedes the whole process of learning, of giving yourself permission to understand the formations of facts, data, stories, pictures, words, conversations that allow you to understand. This book could be called A Celebration of Conversation or Musings with my Mentors. It is about the fantasy of being the dumbest person in the room and being able to identify all the myriad connections of how others think, talk, explain and visualize. The following is a collection of many of the most interesting idiosyncratic paths of understanding that lead to creation.

Download or read book Smith House II written by Michael Prokopow and published by Oro Editions. This book was released on 2018 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the course of his distinguished career, architect Arthur Erickson (1924-2009) designed numerous houses, each an exercise in transforming the needs of his clients into tangible form in the context of site and place. Artists Gordon Smith (1919-) and Marion Smith (1918-2009) of Vancouver were the only Erickson clients to commission him to design two homes. The first (1955) was a straightforward exercise in post-World War II modernism that represented the transplantation of prevailing North American design thinking to the mountainous rain forests of coastal Vancouver. The second house (1966) - Smith House II as it came to be known - likewise situated in a forest but with the added benefit of ocean and island vistas, was simultaneously a deft reworking of the stylistic and spatial culture of the first house and a remarkable, path-breaking study in cultural transposition, interpretation and adaptation. Emphasizing its disavowal of conventional demarcations of space and the movement within and through it, it translated the material and aesthetic sensibilities of 17th century Japanese domestic architecture to the circumstances of mid-20th century North America (and the northerly Pacific coast).

Book Towards Openness

    Book Details:
  • Author : Li Hu
  • Publisher : ORO Applied Research + Design
  • Release : 2018-02
  • ISBN : 9781940743226
  • Pages : 288 pages

Download or read book Towards Openness written by Li Hu and published by ORO Applied Research + Design. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawn from keen observation of the rapidly changing social economic landscape of China, and using OPEN Architecture's projects as case studies, Towards Openness is a symphony of seven built projects and six idea chapters which are interestingly interwoven to offer an in-depth examination of OPEN's unique practice and the critical thinking underlying their work. OPEN's understandings of architecture were summed up in six relatively clear points which, together with their corresponding manifestos, constitute the fundamental attitude and starting point of OPEN's practice. The seven built projects, threaded together by the six ideas, can be seen as OPEN's reaction to the broad issues that they encounter through practice, as well as the actions they take to actively engage in the rapid transformation of the society, with unwavering hope for a better future. The book offers a unique angle in understanding the transformational power of architecture. It presents a humanistic approach to architecture in relation to nature that touches upon our fundamental sensitivity as human beings and goes far beyond the boundary of nations. This book challenges the preconceived and often prejudice notion of what Chinese architecture ought to be. It provides a fresh perspective on contemporary architectural practice in China through the innovative work of OPEN.

Book Victorian Summer

    Book Details:
  • Author : Matthew L. Bernard
  • Publisher : Oro Editions
  • Release : 2017-11
  • ISBN : 9781939621757
  • Pages : 0 pages

Download or read book Victorian Summer written by Matthew L. Bernard and published by Oro Editions. This book was released on 2017-11 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the height of the Gilded Age, America's wealthiest families began to cluster in Newport, Southampton, Bar Harbor, and Tuxedo Park. In these idyllic locales they built luxurious summer "cottages" away from the grit and grime of New York or Boston or Philadelphia. The Belle Haven peninsula, in Greenwich, Connecticut, is home to one of the first and most spectacular residence parks in the country. Its development occurred rapidly, and between 1884 and 1894 Belle Haven Park was transformed from scenic pastureland set above the glistening ribbon of Long Island Sound into a bastion of Victorian luxury. Successful American magazine described the Belle Haven of 1902 as "a nonpareil spot, surpassing in beauty, while equaling in elegance, the pet of the fashionable world, Newport, and outshining Tuxedo in brilliance and gaiety." The New York Times, meanwhile, called it "the flower garden of Greenwich, and, indeed, of the whole Connecticut shore." Victorian Summer: The Historic Houses of Belle Haven Park, Greenwich, Connecticut focuses on that great flowering of Belle Haven, from 1884 to 1929. The 45-year span began with Robert Law Olmsted's storied firm laying out Belle Haven's graceful, lamp-lit streets, and continued with the Gilded Age's most renowned architects designing masterpieces, in styles ranging from the whimsical Queen Anne to the ponderous Richardsonian Romanesque, for the illustrious movers and shakers of the day - men who raised up the Manhattan skyline, co-founded U.S. Steel, formed Nabisco, ran Standard Oil's domestic business, and mined gold, silver, and iron ore to supply an exploding railroad industry. Victorian Summer features estate biographies - each telling the story of a house, an architect, and a predominant owner. Some of these houses are sadly gone or unrecognizably changed--though preserved here in photographs--but many shine on as brightly as ever. Together the biographies weave a portrait of the Gilded Age and its aftermath, with an emphasis on the architecture, but touching on such events as the Civil War, the industrial boom, and the sinking of the Titanic.
