Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Richard Hurdis: Tale of Alabama Richard hurdis was singularly successful with the public in spite of much hostile criticism. It was objected, to the story, that it was of too gloomy and savage a character. But the en tire aspect of a sparsely-settled forest, or mountain country, is grave and saddening, even where society is stationary and consistent; and, where society is only in process of formation the saddening and the grave in its aspect are but too apt to take on even sterner features, and to grow into the gloomy and ferocious. It is quite enough, in answer to the objection, to say that the general protraiture is not only a truthful one, in the present case, but that the materials are really of histor ical character. The story is a genuine chronicle of the border region where the scene is laid, and of the period when the date is fixed. Its action, throughout, is founded on well-known facts. Its personages were real, living men; being, doing, and suffer ing, as here reported. Nothing has been extenuate, nothing has been set down in malice. A softer coloring might. Have been employed, and, more frequently, scenes of repose might have been introduced for relieving the intense and fierce aspects of the story; but these would have been out of place in a narrative so dramatic of cast, and where the action is so rapid. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Alabama Sketches Dan Groby, the negro sexton, knew more of the unquiet pastorate of the Rev. Mr. Crofton than any one at Oakville. Vibrating in his daily duties between the church and the rectory, he lived in the thick of the fight. It was on the forenoon of the day before Easter that Dan, leaning on his broom in front of the church door, narrated to me the events which had occurred during my long absence. "Hit do look peaceful, don't it, sah?" said Dan, gazing up at the little Gothic structure with moss-grown roof shaded by great water-oaks, in whose ivy-draped boughs mocking birds builded and sang perennially. "Dat vine dar's growed a heap since you went away." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Alabama Woman The war was over. To Mrs. Willard it seemed like a. Hideous dream. Her husband, a brave Confederate officer, slept in a far-away Virginia grave. Her eldest son of eighteen lay in an unknown trench with hundreds of others. There were left to her Cora, her only daughter, twelve, and Tresham, a boy of ten. Her three hundred slaves were freed; her broad acres were untilled; she had left only poverty, loneliness and widowhood. Mrs. Willard took counsel with her manager, Hr. Mason, who advised her to hire her freed slaves and plant a prodigious crop of cotton. This staple, he argued, was rising in price every day, and in a few years she would be almost as wealthy as before. The, gentleman from Illinois, (mr. F.) says he admits this principle as regards all property save that of slaves. He denies that Slavery exists by the common law, but contends that it is by statute law only; and denies that this property should be taken to any of the Ter ritories of the Union. I tell that gentleman that this is no longer a question for dispute. It is the law of the land, so pronounced by the highest judicial tribunal in our country. It was also decided by twelve of the ablest judges in England - among whom was Lord Holt - that negroes were merchan dise. I refer the gentleman to Burges's Commentaries, vol. 1, p. 735 Chalmers's Opinions of Eminent Lawyers, vol. 2, pp. 262, 263, 364; and Colquhoun on Roman and Civil Law, not having time to read them now.
