Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This history of Civil War medical practice examines the harrowing circumstances faced by doctors and hospitals in Virginia’s capitol. The Civil War erupted toward the end of a period known as “the medical Middle Ages,” before modern knowledge of bacteria and antiseptics. Doctors of the time, who were considered fully trained after only two-years of study, had few diagnostic tools beyond their own reckoning at hand. While medical science saw significant advances during the Civil War, hospitals in the Southern states faced overwhelming casualties with few supplies and inadequate personnel. In this study of wartime medical facilities in Richmond, Virginia, Rebecca Calcutt illustrates how exhausted resources rapidly defeated southern doctors’ heroic efforts. Richmond’s Wartime Hospitals covers the more than fifty hospitals, covering each facility’s location, dates of operation, and surgeon in charge. Where archival information is available, Calcutt includes detailed descriptions of the buildings, first-person accounts of day-to-day operations, and other historical anecdotes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1970s constitute the decade of decisions about state mental hospi tals! These large, monolithic, and seemingly impervious institutions are being phased out in some states and their basic purpose for exis tence is being seriously questioned in almost all others. Since 1970, hospitals have closed in California, Illinois, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New York, Oklahoma, Washington, and Wisconsin. Simi lar closings have occurred in several provinces of Canada, in Great Britain, and in some European countries. The purpose of the book is to examine the multiple issues growing out of the hospital closings: Why are the state hospitals being closed? What is the impact of closings on patients, hospital staff, and the communities where the hospitals are located? What has been the impact on the communities receiving these patients? What are the trends for the future, in terms of numbers of closings and types of hospitals which will remain? Is there a role for the state hospital in the care of the mentally ill or is it an obsolete institution? The impetus for the closings is diverse. The discovery and wide spread use of the tranquilizing drugs in the early 1950s allowed more patients to be returned to the community-under medication.

Book American Catholic Hospitals

  • Author : Barbra Mann Wall
  • Publisher : Rutgers University Press
  • Release : 2011-02-10
  • ISBN : 0813551080

Download or read book American Catholic Hospitals written by Barbra Mann Wall and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2011-02-10 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In American Catholic Hospitals, Barbra Mann Wall chronicles changes in Catholic hospitals during the twentieth century, many of which are emblematic of trends in the American healthcare system. Wall explores the Church's struggle to safeguard its religious values. As hospital leaders reacted to increased political, economic, and societal secularization, they extended their religious principles in the areas of universal health care and adherence to the Ethical and Religious Values in Catholic Hospitals, leading to tensions between the Church, government, and society. The book also examines the power of women--as administrators, Catholic sisters wielded significant authority--as well as the gender disparity in these institutions which came to be run, for the most part, by men. Wall also situates these critical transformations within the context of the changing Church policy during the 1960s. She undertakes unprecedented analyses of the gendered politics of post-Second Vatican Council Catholic hospitals, as well as the effect of social movements on the practice of medicine.
