Download or read book Al Birka A1 Introduction to Arabic Letters written by Alejandro Garcia Castillo and published by Albujayra. This book was released on 2014-09-19 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Al-birka, this textbook is composed of six units in which we will look at the letters of the Arabic alphabet in groups, to highlight the similarity between certain letters and make it easier to learn the script. In each unit, letters are introduced one by one, showing how each one is written and pronounced, based on the following model. First, you will find a box introducing the letter, the different ways in which it can be written and the pronunciation. We also include a word in Arabic that begins with that letter and which will help to identify the letter. We indicate if this letter is a sun letter or a moon letter, which is also a feature of its pronunciation. Then, we practice writing this letter. Finally, you will find a series of exercises helping you to identify the letter visually and by sound. These exercises also develop your writing skills and your vocabulary. The answers are found at the end of the book.

Book Architecture for the Dead Cairo s Medieval Necropolis

Download or read book Architecture for the Dead Cairo s Medieval Necropolis written by Galila El Kadi and published by American Univ in Cairo Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The great medieval necropolis of Cairo, comprising two main areas that together stretch twelve kilometers from north to south, constitutes a major feature of the city's urban landscape. With monumental and smaller-scale mausolea dating from all eras since early medieval times, and boasting some of the finest examples of Mamluk architecture not just in the city but in the region, the necropolis is an unparalleled--and until now largely undocumented--architectural treasure trove. In Architecture for the Dead, architect Galila El Kadi and photographer Alain Bonnamy have produced a comprehensive and visually stunning survey of all areas of the necropolis. Through detailed and painstaking research and remarkable photography, in text, maps, plans, and pictures, they describe and illustrate the astonishing variety of architectural styles in the necropolis: from Mamluk to neo-Mamluk via baroque and neo-pharaonic, from the grandest stone buildings with their decorative domes and minarets to the humblest--but elaborately decorated--wooden structures. The book also documents the modern settlement of the necropolis by families creating a space for the living in and among the tombs and architecture for the dead.

Book excerpt: Tabari adds little to the historical details of the battle on the border between the desert and the Iraqi lowlands, in which the newly Islamicized Arabs decisively defeated the Persians. But the anecdotes of bravery, endurance, craft, and eloquence probably record the popular stories as they had come down to his own 10th century. Other events are also described for the years A.D. 635-637, part of the reign of Umar b. al-Khattab. The 39-volume series will be the first complete translation of Tabari's history of the Middle East, completed A.D. 915. Paper edition (unseen), $19.95.
