Book Cow Woman of Akutan

Download or read book Cow Woman of Akutan written by Joan Dodd and published by Publication Consultants. This book was released on 2014-09-15 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As I made my way to the hold, I saw Charlie and Hans lashing the deck cargo down tighter while they, too, struggled against the violent rising and plunging of the boat. Suddenly, despite their efforts, some of the bales of hay and bags of feed slid over the side into the dark churning waters of the Pacific. Crashing waves and roaring wind were so loud I didn't hear them hit the black undulating water; they were just swallowed up. On reaching the hold, I heard cows above the din of the raging storm as they were bellowing in their fear and misery. Cow Woman of Akutan is an incredible account of a family and their partner as they encountered multiple disasters in their attempt to raise livestock on an isolated Aleutian island inhabited by a small group of Alaska Aleuts. Cow Woman of Akutan is a story of survival coupled with multiple events as Akutan villagers often come to the rancher's aid.

Book Akutan Harbor Project Delineation of Wetlands on Akutan Island Alaska

Download or read book Akutan Harbor Project Delineation of Wetlands on Akutan Island Alaska written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The work described in this technical note was done at the request of the Regulatory Branch and the Planning Division of the U.S. Army Engineer District, Alaska, as part of a feasibility study for the potential development of a harbor on Akutan Island in the Aleutian Island chain. Akutan Bay is a steep-sided, glacially scoured, natural inlet on the eastern end of the island (Figure 1). The village of Akutan and a major seafood-processing plant cling to the narrow fringe of level ground at the edge of the fjord. Ocean-going container ships use moorings in the deep water of the bay as they wait to load the frozen catch and transport it to markets throughout the Pacific. But the bay has no natural harbor for the smaller fishing vessels that unload at the facility's dock. The proposed project would excavate a harbor basin in the broad alluvial plain at the head of the bay and would fill and grade adjacent uplands and wetlands to create level areas suitable for harbor-side facilities and associated infrastructure.

Book excerpt: What if you could freeze an unforgettable year and go back and visit the people and experiences any time you wanted? The school year 1978-1979 is just such a year. We lived in the small village of Akutan, located in the isolated Fox Islands in the Aleutian Chain of Alaska. As we taught Aleut children in grades 1-12 in the small one room school, and visited the elders, on this island with an active volcano, our lives were changed. Luke Shelikoff, the last Aleut Chief, deserves such immortality, for his “Williwaws of Wisdom” to help and encourage future generations.

Book Hydrogeology of Proposed Harbor Site at Head of Akutan Bay Akutan Island Alaska

Download or read book Hydrogeology of Proposed Harbor Site at Head of Akutan Bay Akutan Island Alaska written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work supports the environmental impact and feasibility studies by the Planning Division of the U.S. Army Engineer District, Alaska (CEPOA-EN-CW), for the proposed development of a small-boat harbor at the head of Akutan Bay, Akutan Island, Alaska (Figure 1). The commercial fishing industry, the seafood processing industry, and the city of Akutan support development of a harbor facility at the head of Akutan Bay. This location is well-suited because it is ice-free during the winter months. A harbor facility on Akutan Island would increase the capacity of winter storage for the fishing fleet in the Aleutian Islands and bring additional economic growth to the city of Akutan. Work by the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC), for CEPOA-EN-CW for the Akutan Harbor project, involves three separate studies: (1) a wetland delineation, (2) a site survey and development of a digital elevation model, and (3) a geologic/hydrologic assessment. Work for the wetland delineation and the site survey/digital elevation model are presented as separate reports (Wakeley in preparation, Berry and Graves in preparation). This report presents the results of a reconnaissance-level field study to characterize the geology, geomorphology, and hydrology of the proposed harbor area at the head of Akutan Bay. The primary purpose for the hydrogeologic investigation was to determine the impacts to the groundwater table from harbor construction. A major environmental concern and focus of this study was to estimate the onshore movement of the saltwater wedge in the impacted area due to harbor construction Primary objectives of this study were to determine the geology of the harbor area to define important aquifer characteristics of the wetland area. Important aquifer characteristics include the elevation and direction of flow of groundwater, character of the sediments and permeability of the shallow aquifer, and depth to the saltwater wedge.

Book excerpt: Sig Hansen has been a star of the Channel 4's The Deadliest Catchfrom the pilot to the present. Seen in over 150 countries, the show attracts more than 49 million viewers per season, making it one of the most successful series in the history of cable TV. With its daredevil camera work, unpredictably dangerous weather, and a setting as unforgivable and unforgettable as the frigid Bering Sea, The Deadliest Catchis unlike anything else on television. But the weatherworn fishermen of the fishing vessel Northwesternhave stories that don't come through on TV. For Sig Hansen and his brothers, commercial fishing is as much a part of their Norwegian heritage as their names. Descendents of the Vikings who roamed and ruled the northern seas for centuries, the Hansens' connection to the sea stretches from Alaska to Seattle and all the way to Norway. And after twenty years as a skipper on the commercial fishing vessel the Northwestern-- which was his father's before him -- Sig has lived to tell the tales. To be a successful fisherman, you need to be a mechanic, navigator, welder, painter, carpenter, and sometimes, a firefighter. To be a successful fisherman year after year, you need to be a survivor. This is the story of a family of survivors; part memoir and part adventure tale, North by Northwesternbrings readers on deck, into the dockside bars and into the history of a family with a common destiny. Built around a gripping tale of a deadly shipwreck like The Perfect Storm, North by Northwesternis the multi-generational tale of the Hansen family, a clan of tough Norwegian-American fishermen who, through the popularity of The Deadliest Catch, have become modern folk-heroes.

Book Akutan Harbor Project Development of a Digital Elevation Model and Topographic Map

Download or read book Akutan Harbor Project Development of a Digital Elevation Model and Topographic Map written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the second of two technical notes describing work done at the request of the Regulatory Branch and Planning Division of the U.S. Army Engineer District, Alaska, as part of a feasibility study for the potential development of a harbor at the head of Akutan Bay on Akutan Island in the Aleutian Island chain. Wakeley, Noble, and Bishop (2001) described the background of the project, alternative harbor designs, vegetation and soils, and the delineation of wetlands on the site. A technical report by Dunbar, Corcoran, and Murphy (2001) gives results of a geologic and hydrologic assessment including the predicted impacts of harbor construction on local ground- water flow and salinity. The purpose of this technical note is to describe the topographic survey that was conducted in support of the aforementioned studies, and the use of those data to develop a digital elevation model and detailed topographic map.
