Book New Perspectives on African Childhood

Download or read book New Perspectives on African Childhood written by De-Valera NYM Botchway and published by Vernon Press. This book was released on 2019-09-05 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does it mean to be a child in Africa? In the detached Western media, narratives of penury, wickedness and death have dominated portrayals of African childhood. The hegemonic lens of the West has failed to take into account the intricacies of not only what it means to be an African child in local and culturally specific contexts, but also African childhood in general. Challenging colonial discourses, this edited volume guides the reader through different comprehensions and perspectives of childhood in Africa. Using a blend of theory, empiricism and history, the contributors to this volume offer studies from a range of fields including African literature, Afro-centric psychology and sociology. Importantly, in its eclectic geographical coverage of Africa, this book unashamedly presents the good, the bad and the ugly of African childhood. The resilience, creativity, pains and triumphs of African childhood are skilfully woven together to present the myriad of lived experiences and aspirations of children from across Africa. As an important contribution to African childhood studies, this book has the potential to be used by policymakers to shape, sustain or change socio-cultural, economic and education systems that accommodate African childhood dynamics and experiences at different levels.

Book excerpt: Set in a country where being gay is punishable by law, These Letters End in Tears is the heart-wrenching forbidden love story of a Christian girl with a rebellious heart and a Muslim girl leading a double life Bessem notices Fatima for the first time on the soccer field—muscular and focused, she’s the only woman playing and seems completely at ease. When Fatima chases a rogue ball in her direction, Bessem freezes, mesmerized by the athlete’s charm and beauty. One playful wink from Fatima, and Bessem knows her life will never be the same. In Cameroon, a country where same-sex relationships are punishable by law, the odds are stacked against Bessem and Fatima from the start. And when Fatima’s older brother, a staunch Muslim, finds out about their affair, he intervenes by physically assaulting them, an incident that precedes a police raid at the only gay bar in town. After spending days in jail, Fatima goes missing without a trace, and Bessem is left with only rumors of her whereabouts. Has Fatima been sentenced to an unknown prison? Has she been banished from her community, or married off, as some have suggested? Or something even more sinister? Thirteen years later, Bessem is now a university professor leading a relatively quiet life, occasionally and secretly dating other women. However, she has never forgotten Fatima. After spotting a mutual friend for the first time in years—the last person who may have seen Fatima—Bessem embarks on a winding search for her lost love.

Book Lord Lugard s Nigeria

Download or read book Lord Lugard s Nigeria written by Yinka Kolawole and published by Strategic Book Publishing & Rights Agency. This book was released on 2014-09-18 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nigeria is potentially one of the giants of Africa and indeed the world. Myopia and acrebral waste by functional semi-illiterate military dictators in khaki has ruined Nigeria and continues to ruin the country. The instinct of the military is akin to those of armed robbers, as they operate by force of arms over unarmed and defenceless civilians. Military rule imposed by force of arms against unarmed and defenceless civilians is government of the people, not by the people, and not for the people. Civilian rule is not always democratic rule. Civilian rule imposed upon the people by vote-rigging machines called political parties are as effective as guns as an instrument of oppression of the people and looting of the treasury. Civilian government of the people, not by the people, and not for the people, is exactly the same as military government, as they are the masters of the people. The people did not appoint them, and the people cannot sack them. Nigeria should be governed with the best interests of children at the forefront of all that is done. Their anticipated future needs must be the pillar of every plan. Nigerians are the country’s most important natural resource, and will last far longer than its gas and oil reserves. Treat the people well and the country will respond in kind. Above all, give the poor and their children the “tool” they need to fly Nigeria above the dark clouds that cover it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Igbo land isn’t Biafra; Biafra wasn’t Igbo land. Some Igbos seemed intellectually very coarse; excessively dull. “Why, Sir, Sherry is dull, naturally dull; but it must have taken him a great deal of pains to become what we now see him. Such an excess of stupidity, Sir, is not in Nature.” Dr Samuel Johnson “There is Godu oo, chie, chie. Kano Nnamdi, KFC chef, you waka come from London. Nnamdi, are you an anarchist or a ‘Faka?’” Dame Patience Faka Goodluck Jonathan paraphrased. Before secession some Igbos must make sure that there is plenty of grub, and not lament blockade later; necessity may suspend the law, again. “You can always tell an old soldier by the inside of his holsters and cartridge boxes. The young ones carry pistols and cartridges; the old ones, grub.” George Bernard Shaw “Every true Biafran must love Biafra, must have faith in Biafra and its people, and must strive for its greater unity. He must find his salvation here in Biafra. He must be prepared to work for Biafra, to die for Biafra. He must be prepared to defend the sovereignty of Biafra wherever and by whomsoever it is challenged.” Comical Col. Emeka Ojukwu Comical Col. Emeka Ojukwu neither died for Biafra nor in Biafra; did he lie to cretins (not all)? “Beware that you do not despise a single one of these little ones. For I tell you that in heaven their angels are always in the presence of my heavenly father.” The Good Shepherd The best interest of children should be at the forefront of all actions of all governments, and their foreseeable future needs should be the cornerstone of all their plans. Reasoning and vision are unbounded; if the Good Shepherd’s is infinite, He must be who He says He is.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive collection is the first full book-length volume to bring together writing focused around and inspired by the work of John Rickford and his role in sociolinguistic research over the last four decades. Featuring contributions from more than 40 leading scholars in the field, the volume integrates both historical and current perspectives on key topics in Rickford’s body of work at the intersection of language and society, highlighting the influence of his work from diverse fields such as sociolinguistics, stylistics, creole studies, and language and education. The volume is organized around four sections, each representing one of the fundamental strands in Rickford’s scholarship over the course of his career, bookended by short vignettes that feature stories from the field to more broadly contextualize his intellectual legacy: • Language contact from a sociolinguistic and sociohistorical point of view • The political ramifications of linguistic heterogeneity • The stylistic implications of language variation and change • The educational implications of linguistic heterogeneity and social injustice Taken together, The Routledge Companion to the Work of John R. Rickford serves as a platform to showcase Rickford’s pioneering contributions to the field and, in turn, to socially reflective linguistic research more generally, making this key reading for students and researchers in sociolinguistics, creole studies, language and style, and language and education.

Book Dancing with Shadows and Other Stories

Download or read book Dancing with Shadows and Other Stories written by Olabisi Gwamna and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 2008 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The stories in this work are an assortment of bildungsroman, most of them recalling childhood experiences in Nigeria. They have been written bearing in mind the generation of young Africans born to Africans in the United States. Most of these individuals have spent little or no time on the continent, and are therefore unaware of the experiences and backgrounds from which their parents come. This collection regales the reader with tales of intrigue, fun and good humor as some of their parents knew them, at the same time providing them with another source of cultural entertainment. The stories narrated by the women reveal many cultural dilemmas encountered by some African women in America, who find themselves crushed by the cumbersome burden of their gender in a country that has no use for their complicated lifestyle. Although African Studies is far entrenched in the curricular of many universities, very few books are available to cover all the cultural aspects of such a large study area. Hopefully, this collection would serve as another perspective for enhancing multicultural understanding.

Book Nigerian English

Download or read book Nigerian English written by David Jowitt and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2018-11-05 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the past few decades have witnessed growing interest in varieties of English around the world, no study of the Nigerian variety intended for the international market has yet been published.Making use of well-known paradigms, the book will relate Nigerian English, as a ‘Second Language’ variety, to other World Englishes. Its chief overall concern, however, is to provide a detailed descriptive account of the variety, seeking to show what is distinctive about it and also, in this perspective, distinguishing between more educated and less educated usage. After giving a sociolinguistic profile of Nigeria, where English today enjoys a more prominent role than ever before, it will examine in turn the phonology, morpho-syntax, and lexico-semantics of Nigerian English, with samples of written texts from the eighteenth century to the present. It will also give a comprehensive summary of academic research carried out in the field over the past fifty years. In this way the book will provide an introduction to the subject for the benefit of scholars and students in universities in many countries, and will serve as a useful companion to other books in De Gruyter Mouton's Dialects of English series.

Book Stolen Tomorrow

Download or read book Stolen Tomorrow written by Ikechukwu Joseph and published by IKECHUKWU JOSEPH. This book was released on with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This particular morning following public outcry a police raid was carried out and strange discoveries were made. The strangest was a man who walked on his hands and knees like animals. The television showed a long bearded man with overgrown grey tousled hair, bulging eyes like the protruding eyes of bush baby, dry peeling skin and a vulgar voice. The onlookers caught by television cameras showed gloomy faces with some of them having their hands over their heads, some with mouth agape in astonishment and some other faces covered in tears. That was not the strangest but human flesh and bones were found in this strange man’s abode - the abandoned maintenance house. He was not a ritualist but was described as a cannibal. He ate any flesh, fresh or rotten. Much more than a cannibal. They never took time earlier to decode his language. The police could pick things he said like: “I built this place. I am not a criminal. You have taken all from me but you cannot take this place or take me from this place...” The baffling truth was that he was speaking fluent and articulated queen's English. "They said I would climb mountains and hills, cross rivers and valleys and eat like animals," the strange man echoed. The story of Nebuchadnezzar came to mind, hearing his story. "I served them good and they served me bad. My family abandoned me because of them. I studied in Cambridge that is why I cannot leave this bridge. ‘London bridge is falling down, falling down...’" he reverberated in-between speeches as if imitating or singing our childhood song or poem. But more ominous was that top government white papers, official reports setting out government policy on issues to be voted on by the country's legislature and other secret documents were found in his custody... Stolen Tomorrow (Political Scavengers Series Book Two) is about a love story, a family puzzle, is about Cafia Autonomous Community and the oppressive government and a call for the young people to fight for their rights and position in the scheme of things to preserve their future. A speculative fiction and dystopian state, a totalitarian government's abuse of power, a police state that must be rescued from the stale politicians and the junta regime.Aaron Bo suffered a lot of persecutions for standing for the truth and fighting for the Masses.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An intimate reflection on culture and tradition, creativity and power, that draws on a lifetime’s commitment to aesthetic encounter The playwright, poet, essayist, novelist, and Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka is also a longtime art collector. This book of essays offers a glimpse into the motivations of the collector, as well as a highly personal look at the politics of aesthetics and collecting. Detailing moments of first encounter with objects that drew him in and continue to affect him, Soyinka describes a world of mortals, muses, and deities that imbue the artworks with history and meaning. Beyond Aesthetics is a passionate discussion of the role of identity, tradition, and originality in making, collecting, and exhibiting African art today. Soyinka considers objects that have stirred controversy, and he decries dogmatic efforts—whether colonial or religious—to suppress Africa’s artistic traditions. By turns poetic, provocative, and humorous, Soyinka affirms the power of collecting to reclaim tradition. He urges African artists, filmmakers, collectors, and curators to engage with their aesthetic and cultural histories.

However her love was tested in many ways and the depth of it proved to be more than what a fake lover could overcome. The story of Dira took many twists and turns as she overcame objections from her parents due to differences between cultures, languages and ways of life. The persistence of Dira led her to many great characters in the book, and she ultimately got connected to the one she really wanted with the timely assistance of a Mrs. Roy, a former teacher and friend. Though she found herself in a love triangle, Dira surmounted her fear of choosing wrongly and not even physical disability could stop her from claiming her love. This is one book that will transport you to new experiences about different parts of our world, languages, customs, and it’s all seamlessly blended together in a powerfully interesting way to show effect of ignorance on people and the significance of science to bring healing and hope when people connect.
