Book Airworthiness and Flight Characteristics Test A FC of the BHTI 214ST Helicopter

Download or read book Airworthiness and Flight Characteristics Test A FC of the BHTI 214ST Helicopter written by Robert A. Williams and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Airworthiness and Flight Characteristics Test of the Bell 214ST helicopter (S/N N3186W) was conducted by the US Army Aviation Engineering Flight Activity (USAAEFA). The test was conducted at Edwards Air Force Base (elevation 2302 feet), Bakersfield (elevation 488 feet), Bishop (elevation 4120 feet) and Coyote Flats (elevation 9980 feet), California. A total of 62.6 hours (27.5 productive hours) were flown between 1 July and 27 August 1985. Hover, level flight and autorotational descent performance tests were conducted. Handling qualities tests included static and dynamic stability, maneuvering stability, power management, systems failures, mission maneuvers and flight in simulated Instrument Meteorological Conditions (IMC). The airspeed for best glide distance determined from the autorotational descent performance test results of this evaluation was significantly less than the best glide distance airspeed presented in the flight manual. The out-of-ground effect hover test results when compared to the flight manual indicated less hover capability at standard day conditions and altitude below 8060 feet but better hover capability at higher altitudes. The maximum difference between the flight manual and the test results of this evaluation was 250 pounds, below 8060 feet. Two major conclusions reached were: the 214ST is an excellent IMC aircraft with its IMC capabilities exceeding those of any US Army helicopters and its cockpit design significantly reduces pilot workload in most modes of flight.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Airworthiness and Flight Characteristics Test of the Boeing Vertol CH-47D helicopter (USA S/N 81-23383) was conducted by the U.S. Army Aviation Engineering Flight Activity. The test was conducted at St. Paul, Minnesota (elevation 704 feet). Edwards Air Force Base (elevation 2302 feet), Bishop (elevation 4120 feet), and Coyote Flats (elevation 9980 feet), California. A total of 148.8 hours (105.4 productive hours) were flown between 25 January and 13 December 1983. Hover, level flight, and autorotational descent performance tests were conducted. Handling qualities tests included static and dynamic stability, maneuvering stability, takeoff and landing characteristics, power management, simulated systems failures, simulated Instrument Meteorological Conditions flight evaluation, and vibration evaluation. Cockpit and subsystem evaluations were also made. The CH-47D exceeded those performance requirements of the Prime Item Development Specification which were evaluated during this test. The Advanced Flight Control System heading select capability and the pressure refueling capability were found to be enhancing characteristics of the aircraft. Three significant shortcomings were found: the poor engine governing system which allows large rotor speed excursions with changes in power setting or airspeed, the high level of cockpit vibrations at and above cruise airspeeds, and an easily excited three-axis airframe oscillation during high power conditions at light gross weight.

Book Limited Airworthiness and Flight Characteristics A FC Test of the Quick Fix Configuration

Download or read book Limited Airworthiness and Flight Characteristics A FC Test of the Quick Fix Configuration written by G. L. Skinner and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The US Army Aviation Engineering Flight Activity conducted an evaluation to determine the increase in power required and the change in handling qualities due to the installation of the AN/ALQ-151(V)2 countermeasures system and associated mission equipment on the UH-60A helicopter. Testing conducted between 23 May 27 June 1984 totaled 12.4 hours. The addition of the Quick Fix System and associated mission equipment created an increase in equivalent flat plate area (F sub e) of 17 sq ft (ft2) for advance ratios (mu) of o.26 and greater. For mu's less than 0.26, the change in F sub e increased above 17 sq ft as a function of thrust coefficient. Handling qualities of the Quick Fix configured YEH-60A were unchanged from a normal utility configured UH-60A and were determined satisfactory. One deficiency, interference between the main rotor blades and the upper elements of the (no. 3 and no. 4) direction finding dipole antennas during ground taxi and four shortcomings were associated with the Quick Fix configuration. Keywords: Equivalent flat plate area; Handling qualities; Level flight performance; Quick Fix Configuration; YEH-60A helicopter.

This book was released on 1982 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Airworthiness and Flight Characteristics Test of the YAH-64 helicopter was conducted. Seventy flights and 70.4 productive hours were flown. Performance testing assessed the probability of meeting the production contract requirements and consisted of an evaluation of hover, takeoff, level flight, forward flight climb and autorotational descent performance. Handling qualities testing determined compliance with selected research and development contract requirements and included standard stability and control tests, an evaluation of slope landing characteristics and instrument flight capability. Additional tests included evaluation of an uprated engine and an external noise survey. The YAH- 64 now meets the performance requirements of the system specification for the production program; the vertical climb and maximum level flight cruise speeds. Slope landing characteristics were satisfactory up to 9 degree lateral slopes and 10 degree longitudinal slopes.

Book Airworthiness and Flight Characteristics A FC Test of the EH 1X EH 1H Helicopter Configurations

Download or read book Airworthiness and Flight Characteristics A FC Test of the EH 1X EH 1H Helicopter Configurations written by G. T. Downs and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Level flight performance tests were conducted on five EH-1X/EH-1H helicopter configurations to determine the change in drag characteristics with the addition of external mission equipment to the standard UH-1H helicopter configuration. Comparison of data from a baseline test configuration with previously published UH-1H and YUH-1H data indicated approximately 8.0 increase in equivalent flat plate area which was attributed to the external mission antennas, low reflective infrared/optical paint, and heat suppression kit with vertical exhaust ejector. Installation of the M-130 chaff/flare dispensers resulted in a further increase in equivalent flat plate area of 5.0 sq ft. Replacing the vertical exhaust ejector with the hot metal plus plume infrared suppressor, including the ALQ-144 countermeasures jammer resulted in a reduction in equivalent flat plate area of 1.5 sq ft. Installation of the direction finding antennas resulted in no measurable increase in drag. Addition of all external mission equipment and the hot metal plus plume exhaust resulted in a total increased equivalent flat plate area of approximately 11.5 sq ft. from the standard UH-1H helicopter.

Book Helicopter Test and Evaluation

Download or read book Helicopter Test and Evaluation written by Alastair Cooke and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2009-02-12 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although a number of texts on helicopter aerodynamics have been written, few have explained how the various theories concerning rotorborne flight underpin practical flight test and evaluation. This book combines theoretical information on aerodynamics, stability, control and performance with details of evaluation methodologies and practical guidance on the conduct of helicopter flight tests. For each topic the relevant theory is explained briefly and followed by details of the practical aspects of testing a conventional helicopter. These include: * safety considerations * planning the tests * the most efficient way to conduct individual flights Where possible typical test results are presented and discussed. The book draws on the authors' extensive experience in flight test and flight test training and will appeal not only to professionals working in the area of rotorcraft test and evaluation, but also to helicopter pilots, rotorcraft designers and manufacturers and final year undergraduates of aeronautical engineering
