Book Airworthiness and Flight Characteristics Evaluation YAH 1S Improved Cobra Agility and Maneuverability Helicopter

Download or read book Airworthiness and Flight Characteristics Evaluation YAH 1S Improved Cobra Agility and Maneuverability Helicopter written by Gary L. Skinner and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Limited flight tests of a prototype aircraft were conducted at 3 test facilities at various altitudes. Testing concentrated on hover and level flight performance, controllability, and low-speed flight characteristics at heavy gross weight, high density altitude test conditions. The YAH-1S represents a significant improvement over the AH-1G/Q helicopter by virtue of its increased useful load-carrying capability, directional controllability and control margin, and hover performance capability. The control system characteristics of the YAH-1S failed to meet several requirements of applicable paragraphs of military specification MIL-H-8501A and the approved BHC deviations to MIL-H-8501A against which they were tested, but were still considered satisfactory. One shortcoming was noted.

Book excerpt: The United States Army Aviation Engineering Flight Activity conducted in 1975 on preliminary evaluation of the improved Cobra agility and maneuverability helicopter, designated the YAH-1R. During the test, 17 flights were flown for a total of 20.0 flight hours, 12.9 of which were productive. Testing was limited to an evaluation of aircraft handling qualities with emphasis on low-speed flight characteristics at gross weights of approximately 10,000 pounds. Numerous recommendations are made concerning improvement to the power management system of the YAH-1R helicopter. A total of 15 shortcomings were identified.

Book Army Preliminary Evaluation YAH 1R Improved Cobra Agility and Maneuverability Helicopter Addendum

Download or read book Army Preliminary Evaluation YAH 1R Improved Cobra Agility and Maneuverability Helicopter Addendum written by Robert L. Stewart and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Follow-on testing of the YAH-1R helicopter was conducted subsequent to the Army Preliminary Evaluation (APE) of that aircraft. In the six test flights, emphasis was placed on evaluating maneuvering stability in high-speed diving flight and on investigation of engine/rotor system static and dynamic droop characteristics. This report is intended to amplify and expand the APE report and is not a rewrite of that report. In a dive at 155 KIAS, the YAH-1R was found to have stable maneuvering stability at normal load factors below 1.4 and neutral maneuvering stability at load factors above 1.4. The engine/rotor system static and dynamic droop characteristics were unaltered from those described in the APE report. In response to requests, the Army Aviation Systems Command acted to increase the engine output shaft speed limit to 6900 rpm for 10 seconds independent of power. This new proposed engine limit greatly reduces the pilot workload during rapid deceleration maneuvers; however, the engine/rotor speed increase was unaltered and thus remains a shortcoming. No additional deficiencies or shortcomings were determined during this evaluation; the conclusions of the APE report were unaltered.

This book was released on 1984 with total page 83 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Preliminary Airworthiness Evaluation of the AH-1S Modernized Cobra, (S/N 69-16423) with the Kellett ferry tanks installed was conducted at Edwards Air Force Base, California (2302 feet) and Bakersfield, California (488 feet). Approximately 19 productive hours were flown during 24 flights between 17 March and 27 April 1984. The Kellett ferry tanks increased the equivalent flat plate area by 2.0 sq ft. One deficiency noted during the evaluation was the lack of crashworthiness of the external fuel tanks. Four shortcomings associated with the installation of the external fuel tanks were found.

Book Airworthiness and Flight Characteristics Evaluation UH 60A Black Hawk Helicopter

Download or read book Airworthiness and Flight Characteristics Evaluation UH 60A Black Hawk Helicopter written by John I. Nagata and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States Army Aviation Engineering Flight Activity conducted an Airworthiness and Flight Characteristics Evaluation of the third and fourth production UH-60A (Black Hawk) helicopters from 27 October 1979 through 9 October 1980. Performance, handling qualities, and vibration characteristics were evaluated to provide data for the operator's manual and to determine compliance with the applicable paragraphs of the Prime Item Development Specification. The UH-60A met 5 of the 7 performance comments evaluated with reference to the Prime Item Development Specification. The performance of the UH-60A was better than the YUH-60A because of the lower primary mission gross weight of the aircraft, the reduced power required, and the increased power available. Due to the priorities set by United States Army Aviation Research and Development Command the handling qualities portion of the Airworthiness and Flight Characteristics Evaluation was extremely limited. The excellent engine torque matching greatly reduced pilot work load in the area of power management. When maneuvering, the limited load factor envelope at heavy gross weight was easily exceeded. The vibrations were found to be quite high in several areas and were considered to be excessive for a new generation helicopter.

Book Helicopter Maneuverability and Agility Design Sensitivity and Air Combat Maneuver Data Correlation Study

Download or read book Helicopter Maneuverability and Agility Design Sensitivity and Air Combat Maneuver Data Correlation Study written by Thomas H. Lawrence and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 586 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A helicopter maneuverability and agility (M/A) study has been conducted to determine the characteristics of eight different helicopters. This study included a simulation evaluation, analysis of data from the U.S. Army's Air-to-Air Combat Tests (AACT) and a correlation of the two. The results validated previously developed M/A design guidelines and design parameter sensitivities. The helicopters evaluated were the UH-60A, S-76A, AH-64A, AH-1S, OH-58A and SA-365N-1. The CH-53E and Soviet Mi-28 (unclassified) were also analyzed although no AACT data were available for them. The M/A characteristics of these vehicles were assessed by flying detailed, blade element General Helicopter Flight Dynamics Simulation (GenHel) computer models through a series of nine discrete maneuvers. Selected flight test data from AACT II, III and IV were analyzed using a workstation to replay the data and generate synthetic out-of-cockpit views. A method for scoring the simulated maneuvers and the AACT engagements was devised. M/A ratings for all of the subject aircraft were determined using the simulated maneuver scores. Correlation of the M/A ratings to the AACT scores was very good with the winning air combat aircraft having the highest M/A rating in four of the five engagement pairs analyzed. This study also produced a unique database employing a common simulation technology and evaluation methodology for all of the subject helicopters.

Book Engineering Flight Test AH 1G Helicopter Hueycobra Phase D Airworthiness and Flight Characteristics Part 2 Performance

Download or read book Engineering Flight Test AH 1G Helicopter Hueycobra Phase D Airworthiness and Flight Characteristics Part 2 Performance written by Rodger L. Finnestead and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within the scope of this test, the AH-1G helicopter is suitable for the armed helicopter mission provided the insufficient directional control power and inadequate tail rotor drive system torque limitations are corrected. A directional control margin of 10 percent while hovering is the minimum acceptable for normal operation. Installation of the engine inlet screens and the engine particle separator decrease the performance capability of the AH-1G when maximum power available is the limiting parameter. The level-flight performance capabilities of the AH-1G vary with longitudinal cg location and improve as the cg moves aft. The degradation of hover performance capability when hovering in adverse crosswind is significant. The excellent climb performance, particularly from SL to 10,000 feet, enhances the capability of the AH-1G for the attack helicopter mission.
