Book excerpt: This book covers the remarkable success of a second-generation Polish kid who, at the age of eighteen, enlisted in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. He was one of less than a handful of basic airmen who rose to the rank of four-star general. More importantly, it covers the reincarnation of WW II Air Commandos under the code name of Jungle Jim, as well as US combat air operations from 1961 through 1967 flying obsolete B-26s and the newest jet fighter, the F-4D. Then airman Piotrowski qualified for aviation cadet training and earned his first wings as a navigator and electronic warfare officer (EWO). Following assignments in Korea and Japan, he returned to the United States for pilot training ranking number one in his class and qualifying for jet fighters. He was selected for Project Jungle Jim and became a leading air force expert in conventional weapons and tactics. His flying ability, combat experience, and tactical expertise led to his assignment at the Air Force Top Gun School to instruct air force generals headed for Vietnam on conventional weapons and tactics. Following school and staff assignments, he was selected to command the Fortieth Tactical Group, Aviano, Italy. He led the group for three years, receiving a rating as “Best Wing in the USAF.” Following Aviano, he was a special assistant to, and troubleshooter for, General Jones, air force chief. Shortly thereafter, he was selected to build the 552nd AWAC equipped with the E-3A aircraft and bring it to combat status. For his outstanding leadership of the 552nd AWAC Wing he received the prestigious Secretary of the Air Force Zukert Award.

His story is one of looking for something bigger than himself and the challenges his peers created to attempt to limit his successes. Finally, this book is about how the Air Force at the lowest levels has completely diverted from the leadership culture it promotes on paper and replaced it with a culture of favoritism, bullying, and nepotism that greatly contributes to the suicide crisis in the service. Book Risk Management in Organisations

Download or read book Risk Management in Organisations written by Margaret Woods and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-06-01 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Risk management is vital to organisational success, from government down to small businesses, and the discipline has developed rapidly over the last decade. Learning lessons from the good and bad practice of others is a key feature of this book, which includes multiple illustrative examples of risk management practice, in addition to detailed case studies. Combining both theory and practice, the early chapters compare the ISO 31000 and COSO Enterprise Risk Management frameworks and the relevant regulatory regimes in both Europe and the United States. The core of the book is three highly detailed case studies of risk management in the manufacturing (Akzo Nobel), retail (Tesco), and public sectors (Birmingham City Council). Using the lessons learned from the case studies, together with material from elsewhere, the author then outlines four lessons for risk managers that can be used in any organisation seeking to develop a truly enterprise-wide risk management system. This completely revised edition contains updates on regulations and practice, together with new chapters covering technology risk and COVID-19, which are major risks faced by all organisations today. As such the book is essential reading for risk management professionals and postgraduate and executive learners.

Book excerpt: The purpose for this book is simple and straightforward.First, I have found that incredible insights from enlisted leaders exist across the Air Force yet are only available to those who personally know a given leader. This book is intended to help shine a light on these dimly lit corners of our organization so every Airman can benefit from the wisdom of our most experienced military leaders. Second, we all make assumptions about what senior leaders in our organizations want from us. I know I'm guilty of this and have unintentionally acted without understanding, causing me to engage in unproductive behaviors at times throughout my career. So instead of going down the same path many of us have, how about we do something different? Instead of making you operate in the dark without a guiding light, how about we illuminate your understanding around a few big topics by providing thoughts and insights from senior enlisted leaders. This undertaking was intended to help you learn from a broad and diverse range of experiences by our senior enlisted cadre, with the hope that their thinking will guide your actions and create purposeful, constructive behaviors across all levels. As you'll see soon, some answers are concise and direct while others are long and winding. This result is intentional and meant to mimic the varying leadership styles you'll encounter over the course of your career. Ultimately, our hope is that you'll find answers that help guide you in your stage of life or career.
