Book excerpt: Los Angeles International Airport (widely known just by its code, LAX) is one of the world's busiest international airports, ranking 6th in terms of passenger numbers. It houses hubs for American Airlines, Alaska Airlines, Delta Airlines, Southwest Airlines, United Airlines and US Airways, and it accommodates the operations of a wide variety of other US airlines and international airlines from Asia, Europe, Latin and South America, and the Pacific region. All of us see aeroplanes from the ground - parked at airports, taking off, landing, climbing, descending, or cruising high above. But rarely do we see aeroplanes looking down on them from above. Such images are therefore rather unusual and strangely compelling. This book takes look at a selection of the aeroplanes that visit LAX, all of them seen from a rather unique and captivating aerial viewpoint. The book has 144 pages and includes stunning fully-captioned full-plate images (one per page) of the airlines and aircraft that regularly fly into LAX.

Book Los Angeles International Airport

Download or read book Los Angeles International Airport written by William A. Schoneberger and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2009 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Growth on the flatlands along the western extents of Imperial Highway in the 1920s was once measured in beans, barley, and jackrabbits. After 2000, the site that became Los Angeles International Airport would be measured by the more than 60 million passengers and nearly two million tons of cargo passing through it each year. One of the world's busiest airports grew out of Mines Field and expanded quickly in the 1930s with the exploits of Charles Lindbergh and Amelia Earhart, Howard Hughes and Will Rogers, Curtiss and Martin, and Boeing and Lockheed. After World War II, this large portion of coastal Los Angeles between El Segundo and Marina del Rey became the main airport for Greater Los Angeles. With the advent of the jet age in the town of the jet set, LAX became a nexus of international travel and a symbol of sophistication as the "Gateway to the World," a cutting-edge center for the overlapping spheres of aviation, business, politics, and entertainment.

Book Exploring Airport Employee Commute and Parking Strategies

Download or read book Exploring Airport Employee Commute and Parking Strategies written by Diane M. Ricard and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 2012 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Airport employees are vital to the operation of an airport. They staff the airport on a daily basis from well before the first flight operation until after the last flight operation, which at many airports is 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Airport employees generate a significant number of vehicle trips to and from the airport each day, which impacts air quality, airport traffic conditions, and traffic in the communities surrounding the airport and on the freeway system. The purpose of this report was to determine what is known about airport employee commute patterns and commute modes, what programs are being offered to airport employees by the airport operator or a transportation management association (TMA) to provide them with alternatives to the drive alone commute to work, how progress is being monitored, what is known about the effectiveness of airport employee commute options (ECO) programs, what the challenges are for the providers of such programs, and to research some ECO programs offered by non-airport employers for program elements that may have applicability in the airport environment. This report was accomplished through a literature search of airport employee commute programs, commute programs offered by non-airport employers that may have applicability in the airport environment, and through interviews with four U.S. and one U.K. airport operators (of 16 airports and 3 TMAs identified, 84 percent interviewed) that offer comprehensive airport ECO programs. Each of the five case studies provides an example of how ECO strategies are applied in the airport environment.
