Download or read book Ronny Barr Profiles written by Ronny Bar and published by HarperTempest. This book was released on 2021-05-12 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Artist Ronny Bar, a member of director Sir Peter Jackson's New Zealand-based Wingnut Wings team, presents the first collection of his astonishingly detailed First World War aircraft profiles - British Two-Seaters of the Great War. Two-seater aircraft were the workhorses of the Royal Flying Corps and from 1918 the Royal Air Force, operated in a wide variety of roles such as training, artillery spotting, reconnaissance, communications, coastal patrol and even bombing. Some, such as the B.E.2c and R.E.8, became notorious while others such as the Bristol F.2B fighter proved popular and reliable. What they lacked in glamour and aesthetic appeal, these aircraft made up for with their purposeful looks, practical design and do-it-all usefulness over the battlefield. This book features 260 meticulously researched profiles of the war's most important and iconic British two-seaters: the Royal Aircraft Factory B.E.2a to B.E.2g, F.E.2b, F.E.2d and R.E.8; Avro 504, Vickers F.B.5, Sopwith 11/2 Strutter, Armstrong Whitworth F.K.8, Bristol F.2B and Airco DH.4, DH.9 and DH.9A.

Download or read book Unflinching Zeal written by Robin Higham and published by Naval Institute Press. This book was released on 2012-09-15 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This consequential work by a pioneer aviation historian fills a significant lacuna in the story of the defeat of France in May-June 1940 and more fully explains the Battle of Britain of July–October of that year and the influence it had on the Luftwaffe in the 1941 invasion of the USSR. Robin Higham approaches the subject by sketching the story and status of the three air forces--the Armée de l’Air, the Luftwaffe, and the Royal Air Force--their organization and preparation for their battles. He then dissects the the campaigns, their losses and replacement policies and abilities. He paints the struggles of France and Britain from both the background provided by his recent Two Roads to War: From Versailles to Dunkirk (NIP, 2012) and from the details of losses tabulated by After the Battle’s The Battle of Britain (1982, 2nd ed.) and Peter Cornwell’s The Battle of France Then and Now (2007), as well as in Paul Martin’s Invisible Vainqueurs (1990) and from the Luftwaffe summaries in the British National Archives Cabinet papers. One important finding is that the consumption and wastage was not nearly as high as claimed. The three air forces actually shot down only 19 percent of the number claimed. In the RAF case, in the summer of 1940, 44 percent of those shot down were readily repairable thanks to the salvage and repair organizations. This contrasted with the much lower 8 percent for the Germans and zero for the French. Brave as the aircrews may have been, the inescapable conclusion is that awareness of consumption, wastage, and sustainability were intimately connected to survival.

Download or read book South Pacific Air War written by Michael Claringbould and published by . This book was released on 2018-09 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second volume chronicles aerial warfare in the South Pacific for the two crucial months of March and April 1942 when a deadly struggle for Port Moresby played out. It can be read alone or as part of a trilogy which culminates in the Battle of the Coral Sea in May 1942.The period begins with the stunning 10 March US Navy carrier strike against Lae and Salamaua which caused the Japanese to pause their advance until their own carriers were available. Instead they tried to grind the Allied forces at Port Moresby into submission through an unrelenting air assault by their Betty bombers and superlative Zero fighters. After a long wait, Allied land-based fighters finally arrived in the form of Royal Australian Air Force No. 75 Squadron Kittyhawks. These were backed up by a growing collection of United States Army Air Force bombers including A-24 Banshees, B-17 Flying Fortresses, B-25 Mitchells and B-26 Marauders (the latter two types making their worldwide combat debut over the skies of New Guinea). Together this motley force took the fight to the Japanese, resulting in a complex aerial campaign which saw units from both sides reach exhaustion. Never before has such a detailed chronicle of this air war been published, and for the first time the authors match Allied accounts with Japanese records. The result is both thrilling and surprising, with the resulting dispositions of the air forces of both sides setting the scene for the Battle of the Coral Sea in May.Both authors are uniquely qualified to tell this story. Raised in Port Moresby, Michael Claringbould is an acknowledged expert on the Pacific air war and Japanese aviation in particular. Peter Ingman is an acclaimed military history author specialising in the early Pacific War period.
