The results of this effort are to serve as an intermediate design guide in the areas of lateral-directional oscillatory and roll control. The roll handling qualities portion of this report uses as a point of departure the concept that control of bank angle is the primary piloting task in maintaining or changing heading. In the lateral oscillatory portion of this effort, in defining requirements for satisfactory Dutch roll characteristics, a fundamental consideration is the fact that the motions characterizing this mode are ordinarily not the pilot's chief objective. That is, he is not deliberately inducing Dutch roll motions in the sense that he induces rolling and longitudinal short-period motions. A worthwhile approach to establishment of Dutch roll damping requirements is to first establish the basic level, and then to study the varied influences of the disturbance parameters. This approach provides the basis for the material contained in this report.

The pilots performed a low speed, visual maneuvering task and documented their assessment of the characteristics through extensive comments and a numerical rating. Book excerpt: This report presents the results of analysis of cockpit lateral control feel-system studies. Variations in feel-system natural frequency, damping, and command sensing reference (force and position) were investigated, in combination with variations in the aircraft response characteristics. The primary data for the report were obtained from a flight investigation conducted with a variable-stability airplane, with additional information taken from other flight experiments and ground-based simulations for both airplanes and helicopters . The study consisted of analysis of handling qualities ratings and extraction of open-loop, pilot-vehicle describing functions from sum-of-sines tracking data, including, for a limited subset of these data, the development of pilot models. The study confirms the findings of other investigators that the effects on pilot opinion of cockpit feel-system dynamics are not equivalent to a comparable level of added time delay, and until a more comprehensive set of criteria are developed, it is recommended that feel-system dynamics be considered a delay-inducing element in the aircraft response. The best correlation with time-delay requirements was found when the feel-system dynamics were included in the delay measurements, regardless of the command reference. Book excerpt: The results of a flight test program to investigate the effects of higher-order control system dynamics on the handling qualities of a fighter airplane are presented and discussed. This research was undertaken using the variable stability T-33 airplane as an in-flight simulator. This in-flight investigation was based on a similar fixed-base ground simulator program. Higher-order response characteristics were obtained by altering the elevator stick feel system dynamics and elevator actuator dynamics in conjunction with four different sets of longitudinal short period airplane dynamics. In the investigation, the dynamics of any of the three elements (feel system, actuator, and airplane) could be changed independently of the others. Three of the set of four airplane characteristics were investigated as a fighter in 'up-and-away' flight, and the fourth was evaluated as a fighter during landing approach. Thirty-two different configurations were evaluated by one evaluation pilot (Pilot B) and 35 configurations were evaluated by a second evaluation pilot (Pilot H). Essentially the same configurations were evaluated by both pilots and rated using a new pilot rating scale. Pilot H also rated the configurations for their pilot-induced oscillation (PIO) tendencies using a PIO rating scale. Pilot comments were recorded in flight and the comments and ratings were related to various handling qualities parameters and response characteristics of the configurations. (Author).

Regulation of the bank angle to maintain heading is a close-loop tracking task in which the pilot applies aileron control as a function of observed bank angle error. For large heading changes, the steady-state bank angle consistent with available or desired load factor is attained in an open-loop fashion; it is then regulated in a closed-loop fashion throughout the remainder of the turn. For the transient entry and exit from the turn, the pilot is not concerned with bank angle per se, but rather with attaining a mentally commanded bank angle with tolerable accuracy in a reasonable time, and with an easily learned and comfortable program of aileron movements.
