Book Aircraft and Ground Vehicle Winter Runway Friction Assessment

Download or read book Aircraft and Ground Vehicle Winter Runway Friction Assessment written by Thomas J. Yager and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some background information is given together with the scope and objectives of a 5-year, Joint Winter Runway Friction Measurement Program between the National Aeronautics & Space Adminstration (NASA), Transport Canada (TC), and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The primary objective of this effort is to perform instrumental aircraft and ground vehicle tests aimed at identifying a common number that all the different ground vehicle devices would report. This number, denoted the International Runway Friction Index (IRFI), will be related to all types of aircraft stopping performance. The range of test equipment, the test sites, test results and accomplishments, the extent of the substantial friction database compiled, and future test plans will be described. Several related studies have also been implemented including the effects of contaminant type on aircraft impingement drag, and the effectiveness of various runway and aircraft de-icing chemical types, and application rates.

Book Aircraft Ground Vehicle Friction Measurement Study

Download or read book Aircraft Ground Vehicle Friction Measurement Study written by TJ. Yager and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tests with specially instrumented NASA B-737 and FAA B-727 aircraft together with several different ground friction-measuring devices have been conducted for a variety of runway surface types and conditions. These tests are identified as part of Joint FA A/NASA Aircraft/Ground Vehicle Runway Friction Program aimed at obtaining a better understanding of aircraft ground handling performance under adverse weather conditions and defining relationships between aircraft and ground-vehicle tire friction measurements. Aircraft braking performance on dry, wet, snow-, and ice-covered runway conditions is discussed together with ground-vehicle friction data obtained under similar runway conditions. For a given contaminated runway-surface condition, the correlation between ground vehicles and aircraft friction data is identified. The influence of major test parameters on friction measurements such as speed, test-tire characteristics, type and amount of surface contaminant, and ambient temperature is discussed. The effect of surface type on wet friction levels is also evaluated from comparative data collected on grooved and ungrooved concrete and asphalt surfaces.

Book Joint Winter Runway Friction Measurement Program JWRFMP

Download or read book Joint Winter Runway Friction Measurement Program JWRFMP written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report updates the research & data collection carried out in the Joint Winter Runway Friction Measurement Program up through the seventh year of the program. Objectives of the program include compilation of a database containing all test data available from ground vehicles & aircraft that participated in the winter & summer runway friction measurement projects, and using the data to determine a harmonized runway friction index, the International Runway Friction Index (IRFI). The report includes a review of the instrumented test aircraft and ground friction measuring vehicles tested, tester activities by year & site, index development options considered, essential elements of the statistical harmonization method for the IRFI, results of measurement reproducibility tests, and IRFI correlation constants on a year-to-year basis.

Book Vehicular Measurements of Effective Runway Friction

Download or read book Vehicular Measurements of Effective Runway Friction written by Jack J. Shrager and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tests were conducted to determine the relationship of friction measurements, as computed from full-scale jet aircraft braking tests, to measurements obtained with special ground vehicular equipment on an operational runway under simulated adverse weather conditions. Results indicated that it may be possible to employ special vehicular equipment to obtain operational runway surface friction which can be related to the maximum energy braking effectiveness for a full-scale jet aircraft.
