Download or read book Airborne Laser written by Robert W. Duffner and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 1997-08-21 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Airborne Laser: Bullets of Light traces the development of the airborne laser from its scientific beginning to its development as a viable shield against missile attacks. For the first time, a professional historian has had access to formerly classified information, and has interwoven a rich documentary/history of scientists and engineers dealing with seemingly intractable technical problems. The book provides a comprehensive overview of the workings of a military laboratory involved with solving the problems of laser technology. The people responsible for this work come to life, and their long journey toward the implementation of their research is a real success story - one that has never been told. On another level, the book is a case study for those who are tempted to dismiss a demonstration system as a mere engineering problem. The results of the program have proven far-reaching, and contain lessons for the current generation of star warriors.

Download or read book Military Laser Technology for Defense written by Alastair D. McAulay and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-04-20 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent advances in ultra-high-power lasers, including the free-electron laser, and impressive airborne demonstrations of laser weapons systems, such as the airborne laser, have shown the enormous potential of laser technology to revolutionize 21st century warfare. Military Laser Technology for Defense, includes only unclassified or declassified information. The book focuses on military applications that involve propagation of light through the atmosphere and provides basic relevant background technology. It describes high-power lasers and masers, including the free-electron laser. Further, Military Laser Technology for Defense addresses how laser technology can effectively mitigate six of the most pressing military threats of the 21st century: attack by missiles, terrorists, chemical and biological weapons, as well as difficulty in imaging in bad weather and threats from directed beam weapons and future nuclear weapons. The author believes that laser technology will revolutionize warfare in the 21st century.

Download or read book Handbook of Defence Electronics and Optronics written by Anil K. Maini and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2018-03-26 with total page 2266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Handbook of Defence Electronics and Optronics Anil K. Maini, Former Director, Laser Science and Technology Centre, India First complete reference on defence electronics and optronics Fundamentals, Technologies and Systems This book provides a complete account of defence electronics and optronics. The content is broadly divided into three categories: topics specific to defence electronics; topics relevant to defence optronics; and topics that have both electronics and optronics counterparts. The book covers each of the topics in their entirety from fundamentals to advanced concepts, military systems in use and related technologies, thereby leading the reader logically from the operational basics of military systems to involved technologies and battlefield deployment and applications. Key features: • Covers fundamentals, operational aspects, involved technologies and application potential of a large cross-section of military systems. Discusses emerging technology trends and development and deployment status of next generation military systems wherever applicable in each category of military systems. • Amply illustrated with approximately 1000 diagrams and photographs and around 30 tables. • Includes salient features, technologies and deployment aspects of hundreds of military systems, including: military radios; ground and surveillance radars; laser range finder and target designators; night visions devices; EW and EO jammers; laser guided munitions; and military communications equipment and satellites. Handbook of Defence Electronics and Optronics is an essential guide for graduate students, R&D scientists, engineers engaged in manufacturing defence equipment and professionals handling the operation and maintenance of these systems in the Armed Forces.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Directed Energy Weapons is nothing new to mankind, historically the origination of such weapons falls in centuries ago when first time the famous Greek mathematician, physicist, engineer, inventor, and astronomer Archimedes of Syracuse used different mirrors to collect sunbeams and focusing them on Romans fleet in order to destroy enemy ships with fire. This is known as the Archimedes Heat Ray. Archimedes may have used mirrors acting collectively as a parabolic reflector to burn ships attacking Syracuse. The device was used to focus sunlight onto approaching ships, causing them to catch fire. Of course the myth or reality of Archimedes Heat Ray still is a questionable story, but certain experiments with the help of a group of students from Massachusetts Institute of Technology was carried out with 127 one-foot (30 cm) square mirror tiles in October of 2005 that was focused on a mock-up wooden ship at a range of around 100 feet (30 m). The flames broke out on a patch of the ship, but only after the sky had been cloudless and the ship had remained stationary for around ten minutes. It was concluded the device was a feasible weapon under these conditions.

Book excerpt: The relationship between war and science — as old as the wheel — entered a whole new realm with the Civil War, the first truly ""technological"" conflict. Secret Gadgets and Strange Gizmos traces this evolving connection from the deadly innovations of the Union and Confederate forces to the top secret, high-tech inventions that are making military history today. Chronicling the hits, the misses, and the important technological advances produced by the U.S. military’s high-tech hubs — aviation, wireless communication, the Internet, atomic energy, satellite technology, and space travel — this richly illustrated book takes readers from the ironclads, land mines, and ship-launched hydrogen balloons of the Civil War to the world-changing bombs of the Atomic Age.
