Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much of the more than 30 million tons of asbestos used in the United States since 1900 is still present as insulation in offices and schools, as vinyl-asbestos flooring in homes, and in other common products. This volume presents a comprehensive evaluation of the relation of these fibers to specific diseases and the extent of nonoccupational risks associated with them. It covers sources of asbestiform fibers, properties of the fibers, and carcinogenic and fibrogenic risks they pose.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Settled Asbestos Dust Sampling and Analysis compiles the most significant data on asbestos in settled dust. This ready reference presents an analysis of settled dusts and surface particles of all sizes for asbestosthat is useful for qualitative and quantitative assessment and helps to determine the source of fibers. The main scope of this reference includes sample collection, sample analyses, and interpretation of settled dust data, as well as the use of such data for purposes including asbestos abatement projects and in-place management programs. Sections on lead and other particulates are also included.

Book Asbestos The Hazardous Fiber

Download or read book Asbestos The Hazardous Fiber written by Melvin A. Benarde and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-05-04 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the passage of the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act, AHERA, Public Law 99-519, it was clear that great quantities of asbestos would be disturbed and would require proper management and disposal. If these were poorly done, many people would be placed at risk unnecessarily.Into such an environment, a book dealing with the many diverse facets of asbestos abatement, written by people with substantial experience, seemed reasonable and appropriate, but even more so, necessary.

Book A Review of the NIOSH Roadmap for Research on Asbestos Fibers and Other Elongate Mineral Particles

Download or read book A Review of the NIOSH Roadmap for Research on Asbestos Fibers and Other Elongate Mineral Particles written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2010-01-02 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although asbestos is no longer mined in the United States, prior and ongoing exposures to asbestos continue to contribute to respiratory diseases, including mesothelioma, lung cancer, and asbestosis. To examine ongoing issues and concerns in this field, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) drafted a research roadmap, Asbestos Fibers and Other Elongated Mineral Particles: State of the Science and Roadmap for Research, that provides an overview of the state of the science and a plan for future research in areas including toxicology, mineralogy, epidemiology, and exposure assessment. The focus of the proposed research is on clarifying the relationship between human health effects and the physical and chemical characteristics of a wide range of elongate mineral particles. In 2008, NIOSH asked the Institute of Medicine and the National Research Council to form a committee to provide a review of the scientific and technical quality of the January 2009 draft NIOSH Roadmap document. The present volume provides the committee's assessment of the Roadmap and recommendations for strengthening its utility for NIOSH, other federal agencies, the private sector, and other stakeholders.
