Book The Simple Science of Flight

Download or read book The Simple Science of Flight written by Hendrik Tennekes and published by MIT Press (MA). This book was released on 1997 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the smallest gnat to the largest aircraft, all things that fly obey the same aerodynamic principles. The Simple Science of Flight offers a leisurely introduction to the mechanics of flight and, beyond that, to the scientific attitude that finds wonder in simple calculations, forging connections between, say, the energy efficiency of a peanut butter sandwich that fuels your body and that of the kerosene that fuels a jumbo jet. It is the product of a lifetime of watching and investigating the way flight happens. He covers paper airplanes, kites, gliders, and human-powered flying machines as well as birds and insects, explaining difficult concepts like lift, drag, wing loading, and cruising speed through many fascinating comparisons, anecdotes, and examples. Equations, often the best shorthand to explain and connect phenomena, are integrated seamlessly into the flow of the text in such a way that even math-phobic readers should not be put off. Tennekes begins with a simple comparison of the relative fuel consumption of hummingbirds, cars, and airplanes, then turns to the relations between an airplane's weight, its wing area, and its cruising speed. After showing that it is possible to collect data on all flying creatures and flying machines in a single "Great Flight Diagram", he looks at energetics through the considerable efforts of a little 35-gram bird in a wind tunnel. There are stories on the effects of headwinds, tailwinds, and weather conditions on both birds and planes, on the elegance of the mechanics that makes flight possible, and on the aerodynamics of sophisticated flying toys.

Book Air Transport Safety

    Book Details:
  • Author : Chelsie Phillips
  • Publisher : Nova Science Publishers
  • Release : 2015
  • ISBN : 9781633219274
  • Pages : 0 pages

Download or read book Air Transport Safety written by Chelsie Phillips and published by Nova Science Publishers. This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is composed of thirteen chapters. Chapter 1 provides a short overview of the Air Transport System, from both the micro- and macro-level structure. It covers the descriptions and definitions of the main system elements: air carriers, airports and air navigation service providers, as well as personnel, equipment, procedures and the environment. Chapter 2 introduces the reader to the basic concepts in air transport risk and safety. This chapter covers the definitions of safety, hazards, risk, incidents and accidents. It further explains safety criteria, safety barriers, safety regulatory requirements, and finally it compares Safety I and Safety II concepts. Chapter 3 covers the field of Air Transport Safety Metrics and Records. Here safety metrics, accident statistics and safety records are explained and illustrated. Finally, a safety comparison of transport modes is made. Chapter 4 presents Sources of Accident/Incident Information. Explained here is how safety-related events (incidents and accidents) are investigated and what the phases of the investigation process are, as well as how safety information is collected. Chapter 5 describes the main safety issues in contemporary air transport. They are grouped into three sets: airport, air navigation service providers and air carriers' safety issues.

Book Airworthiness

Download or read book Airworthiness written by Filippo De Florio and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 2016-07-12 with total page 554 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Airworthiness: An Introduction to Aircraft Certification and Operations, Third Edition, once again proves to be a valuable, user-friendly reference guide for certification engineers engaged in professional training and practical work in regulatory agencies and aircraft engineering companies. The discussions reflect the recent changes in the EASA-FAA regulations and also include the concepts of flight safety and airworthiness; the ICAO and civil aviation authorities; airworthiness requirements; type certifications and the type-certification process; production of products, parts, and appliances; certifications of airworthiness; and rules for spaceworthiness. Since publication of the second edition, airworthiness regulation and certification around the world have gone through significant changes. For example, EASA structure has completely changed, FAA rules are no longer applicable, substantial changes have been made in the international airworthiness regulations and certification procedures, and unmanned aircraft have evolved technically and operationally. The changes in airworthiness regulations in the last five years have been striking, changing the way in which we look at airworthiness and certification processes around the world. - Includes updates throughout to reflect changes to the airworthiness regulations of the two most influential ruling authorities—EASA and FAA - Includes an update on remotely piloted air systems as well as space vehicles - Provides guidelines to shape a comprehensive 'certification map' including comparisons, explanations, and backgrounds of institutions and processes - Features a new chapter "Certificates of Airworthiness and Permits to Fly" that provides an overall description of the requirements governing the certificates of airworthiness
