Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Never before have Canadians been as concerned about clean air. The federal government estimates that air pollution causes 5,000 premature deaths in Canada each year. Environmental and public health advocates believe the number closer to 16,000. If they are right, air pollution is responsible for approximately forty premature deaths across Canada every day. The magnitude and complexity of the threats to our clean air are staggering. Some of these threats - including smog, acid rain, and hazardous air pollutants - tend to be local or regional in scope. Others - such as ozone layer depletion and climate change - are truly global in nature. The need for action at all levels and in all sectors of society, within and beyond our borders, is undeniable. If solutions are to be found, citizens everywhere must become more effective advocates for clean air. This guide has been written in the belief that citizens can make a difference. Making a difference, however, depends heavily on being informed and strategic in advocating for change. A legal and scientific primer on clean air issues, this guide is intended to provide an accessible way for citizens across Canada to become informed about air

Book Air Quality in Urban Environments

Download or read book Air Quality in Urban Environments written by R M Harrison and published by Royal Society of Chemistry. This book was released on 2009-08-07 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Urban air quality is a topic which remains high on the scientific and political agenda. Concentrations of most air pollutants are higher in urban areas than in the surrounding rural regions, and given the high population densities, it is within urban areas that the majority of the population receive their air pollutant exposure. Despite the continued implementation of abatement measures, concentrations of air pollutants within urban areas frequently exceed health-based guidelines and stricter measures to restrict emissions are required. This comprehensive volume, written by authoritative authors, deals with the basic science of urban air pollution in relation to the sources and concentrations, and the atmospheric chemical and physical processes which determine those concentrations and lead to the formation of secondary pollutants by chemical reactions in the atmosphere. The health effects of urban air pollution are described as is the policy response designed to mitigate the problems. Some of the highest air pollutant exposures occur within underground railway systems and this topic is considered explicitly in its own chapter. With comprehensive coverage from sources through atmospheric processes, to human exposure and effects on health and the policy response, this topical work will be of interest to scientists and policy makers within this field as well advanced students.

Book WHO Guidelines for Indoor Air Quality

Book National Clean Air Agreement

Download or read book National Clean Air Agreement written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "It is well recognised that Australia's current air quality remains very good by world standards. Australian governments have, over a number of years, successfully implemented measures to reduce air pollution which have significantly improved Australia's overall air quality with positive environmental and health impacts. We want to maintain this good performance, while addressing areas of concern. Peak levels of airborne pollutants such as ground level ozone and particulate matter (PM) frequently approach or exceed national air quality standards in some Australian cities (ozone) or nearly all regions (PM). Furthermore, there are specific areas of concern to local communities, including emissions of sulfur dioxide and PM, from a range of sources (for example, industrial activity, heating). Air quality issues may be limited to a particular region due to local air pollution sources, or may be more widespread and experienced across one or more jurisdictions, due to common air pollutant sources (such as vehicle emissions) or due to the trans-boundary movement of airborne pollutants. Regardless of the source of air pollution, it continues to be a major human health concern, given the known respiratory and cardiovascular effects and recently recognised carcinogenic properties of air pollutants. Sensitive individuals (children, the elderly and those with existing respiratory and/or cardiovascular disease) are particularly susceptible to air pollution. Other concerns of air pollution include environmental impacts, economic costs, and impacts on our quality of life, especially in our cities and towns."--Website summary.

Book Health Risk from Pm2 5 and Ozone in Melbourne

Download or read book Health Risk from Pm2 5 and Ozone in Melbourne written by Sarunya Sujaritpong and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Australia, adverse health impacts of air pollution have still been reported despite relatively low pollution levels. There is a growing concern that climate change may have a detrimental effect on future air quality and impose additional air pollution-related health burdens. This thesis aimed to assess the impacts of future climate change on the health effects of air pollution in the Melbourne Region. Firstly, the best approach was identified to estimate baseline relative risks for cardiovascular and respiratory mortality and emergency department (ED) visits associated with exposure to particulate matter with diameters of less than 2.5 micrometres (fine PM) and ozone. A Poisson regression model was fitted to estimate the baseline relative risks by using data during 1999-2008. A blending approach in which air pollution and weather data were generated by merging simulations and measurements was selected as it provided larger risk estimates, thought to indicate lower measurement error. The blending approach was used further to explore whether there was evidence of a modifying effect of temperature on the air pollution-related health risks. The Poisson model previously developed was modified to include an interaction term for temperature strata. Non-uniform relative risks for fine PM- and ozone-related respiratory ED visits across the temperature range were observed, suggesting the effect modification of temperature. Next, the baseline relative risks earlier estimated were used to predict changes in air pollution-related respiratory ED visits induced by climate change in the Port Phillip Region between 2065-2074 and 1996-2005. Two methods, with and without inclusion of the temperature modifying effect, were used. Without the temperature modifying effect, exposure to future ozone modified by the changing climate was estimated to cause an additional 60 to 110 respiratory ED visits over three summer months. An increase of 15 to 26 respiratory ED visits over the summer period was estimated due to exposure to fine PM. In winter, a reduction in fine PM-related respiratory ED visits was estimated based on three of four global circulation models. When using the method taking account of the temperature modifying effect, an increase in estimates of fine PM-related respiratory ED visits for summer and winter between the two periods was predicted, with a greater magnitude compared to the estimates predicted by the other method. A little difference in ozone-related respiratory morbidity between the two decades was predicted for summer with inclusion of the temperature modifying effect. Finally, the sensitivity of the estimated changes in respiratory morbidity to uncertainties in non-climate factors was explored. Among the factors examined, future population growth appeared to be the largest contributor to the variation in estimated changes in the future health effects of air pollution. This thesis provides a systematic investigation of the health risks of air pollution under the effects of future climate change, including a careful analysis of the sensitivity of the results to uncertainties. Assessing the health impacts of extreme air pollution episodes under climate change is an important area, not examined here, that should be the focus of future studies.

  • Pages : 266 pages

Download or read book Air Pollution And Health written by Jon G Ayres and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2006-09-15 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This invaluable volume, the third in the series Air Pollution Reviews, addresses particular questions relating to air pollution and its effect on health. It deals with the impact of nasal disease on lung exposure, how pollutants are distributed within the lung, and the uncertainties with regard to defining the dose to the lung. It takes a tangential look at the lung dose by exploring the possibility of obtaining clues from occupational medicine.Toxicologically, the book examines the possible methodology for exploring how particles and their toxicity can be investigated, and looks into the cardio-toxic effects of air pollution. The effects of pollutant mixtures are compared with those of individual pollutants. In addition, the question of the importance of acid aerosols is tackled.Epidemiologically, the book deals with the problems associated with point sources as opposed to diffuse sources of air pollution, and considers whether the health effects of air pollution can be adequately quantified. These areas, though difficult, need to be addressed, in order to develop our knowledge of the health effects of air pollution. In this volume, a strong panel of authors treat the issues. They have raised questions but at the same time succeeded in solving a number of problems.
