Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the treatment of water and exhaust gas using ultraviolet (UV) light offers both ecological and economic advantages, information on photo-initiated advanced oxidation technologies (AOTs) has been dispersed among various journals and proceedings until now. This authoritative and comprehensive handbook is the first to cover both the photochemical fundamentals and practical applications, including a description of advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) and process engineering of suitable photoreactors. The author presents various real-world examples, including economic aspects, while many references to current scientific literature facilitate access to current research topics relevant for water and air industries. Throughout, over 140 detailed figures visualize photochemical and photophysical phenomena, and help in interpreting important research results. From the foreword by James R. Bolton (President of Bolton Photosciences Inc., Executive Director of the International Ultraviolet Association (IUVA)): "Prof. Oppenländer is well qualified to write about the AOPs/AOTs, since he has contributed to this literature in a very significant manner. This book will be of considerable value to graduate students, science and engineering faculty, scientists, process engineers and sales engineers in industry, government regulators and health professionals."

Book Advanced Physicochemical Treatment Processes

Download or read book Advanced Physicochemical Treatment Processes written by Lawrence K. Wang and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-11-10 with total page 697 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past thirty years have witnessed a growing worldwide desire that po- tive actions be taken to restore and protect the environment from the degr- ing effects of all forms of pollution—air, water, soil, and noise. Because pollution is a direct or indirect consequence of waste, the seemingly idealistic demand for “zero discharge” can be construed as an unrealistic demand for zero waste. However, as long as waste continues to exist, we can only attempt to abate the subsequent pollution by converting it to a less noxious form. Three major questions usually arise when a particular type of pollution has been id- tified: (1) How serious is the pollution? (2) Is the technology to abate it ava- able? and (3) Do the costs of abatement justify the degree of abatement achieved? This book is one of the volumes of the Handbook of Environmental Engineering series. The principal intention of this series is to help readers f- mulate answers to the last two questions above. The traditional approach of applying tried-and-true solutions to specific pollution problems has been a major contributing factor to the success of en- ronmental engineering, and has accounted in large measure for the establi- ment of a “methodology of pollution control. ” However, the realization of the ever-increasing complexity and interrelated nature of current environmental problems renders it imperative that intelligent planning of pollution abatement systems be undertaken.

Book Design of Thermal Oxidation Systems for Volatile Organic Compounds

Download or read book Design of Thermal Oxidation Systems for Volatile Organic Compounds written by David A Lewandowski and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-12-14 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Controlling the emission of volatile organic compounds (VOC) became a very prominent environmental issue with the passage of the 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments, and will continue to be an environmental priority through the next decade. No single technology has played as important a role in the control of VOC emissions as thermal oxidation. It has the ability to destroy VOCs in a one-step process that produces innocuous by-products. Design of Thermal Oxidation Systems for Volatile Organic Compounds provides all the information needed for developing a thermal oxidation design in a single reference. It covers design, operation, and maintenance as well as the principles behind the classification of volatile organic compounds as hazardous waste. The author explores the primary purpose of thermal oxidizers and discusses their limitations. The book provides: practical, complete, and concise thermal oxidizer design principles an outline of state-of-the-art design principles a practical rather than theoretical approach real industrial examples in each chapter With the new regulations that affect VOC emissions, engineers from such diverse fields as oil refining, chemical distillation and separation processes, and pharmaceutical industries will need to design and implement thermal oxidation systems. Design of Thermal Oxidation Systems for Volatile Organic Compounds provides a reference to the entire design process, from conceptualization to operation and maintenance.

Book Oxidation of Organic Compounds

Download or read book Oxidation of Organic Compounds written by N. M. Emanuel and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 628 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oxidation of Organic Compounds: Medium Effects in Radical Reactions explores the role of solvents and of the composition of phase states in radical-chain processes involved in the oxidation of organic compounds. Organized into 10 chapters, this book begins with a discussion of the basic concepts relating to the mechanism involved in the oxidation of hydrocarbons and other organic compounds in liquid-phase reactions. Subsequent chapters detail some methods for studying the mechanism of oxidation reactions; role of solvation in chemical reaction kinetics; role of the medium in chain-initiation reactions; role of non-specific and specific solvation in chain-propagation and chain-termination reactions; and the role of solvation in chain-termination reactions in inhibitors. The influence of the solvent and the phase state of substances undergoing oxidation on the rates and mechanisms of individual elementary processes are also addressed. The last chapter examines the problem of the influence of the solid state of the polymer on the reactivity of radicals. This monograph will be valuable to scientific research workers, engineers, and engineering technologists specializing in the field of radical reactions and in particular in the oxidation of organic compounds.

Download or read book Advanced Oxidation Processes for Water and Wastewater Treatment written by Simon Parsons and published by IWA Publishing. This book was released on 2004-03-01 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The suitability of Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs) for pollutant degradation was recognised in the early 1970s and much research and development work has been undertaken to commercialise some of these processes. AOPs have shown great potential in treating pollutants at both low and high concentrations and have found applications as diverse as ground water treatment, municipal wastewater sludge destruction and VOCs control. Advanced Oxidation Processes for Water and Wastewater Treatment is an overview of the advanced oxidation processes currently used or proposed for the remediation of water, wastewater, odours and sludge. The book contains two opening chapters which present introductions to advanced oxidation processes and a background to UV photolysis, seven chapters focusing on individual advanced oxidation processes and, finally, three chapters concentrating on selected applications of advanced oxidation processes. Advanced Oxidation Processes for Water and Wastewater Treatment will be invaluable to readers interested in water and wastewater treatment processes, including professionals and suppliers, as well as students and academics studying in this area. Dr Simon Parsons is a Senior Lecturer in Water Sciences at Cranfield University with ten years' experience of industrial and academic research and development.
