Book Air Force Operations Overseas in Peacetime OPTEMPO and Force Structure Implications

Download or read book Air Force Operations Overseas in Peacetime OPTEMPO and Force Structure Implications written by and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The post-Desert Storm era increasingly has been characterized by involvement of U.S. military forces in "contingency" operations short of war-activities of prolonged duration to enforce peace agreements and truces, to uphold standards of international conduct, and to provide humanitarian aid. This, together with regular military-to-military interactions and continued basing of forces in Europe and the Pacific, has made it imperative that the defense community assess the implications of ongoing operations overseas. This documented briefing seeks to capture the breadth of the Air Force's commitment to supporting the President and his combatant commanders-in-chief during peacetime. It also provides insights into what this commitment implies for the USAF force structure. This work was performed as part of a Project AIR FORCE-wide effort sponsored by Maj. Gen. Charles Link, former Special Assistant to the Chief of Staff, National Defense Review. The goal of this effort was to provide a documented and credible analytic foundation for the Air Force as it worked to ensure that its capabilities were accurately portrayed in the Deep Attack Weapons Mix Study, in the Quadrennial Defense Review, and in the National Defense Panel.

Book Preparing The U S Air Force for Military Operations Other Than War

Download or read book Preparing The U S Air Force for Military Operations Other Than War written by and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No longer perceived as military 'sideshows', peace operations, humanitarian relief, and similar military operations other than war (MOOTW) now occupy center stage. Ongoing peace operations in Iraq and Bosnia, in particular, are producing an operations tempo unprecedented in peacetime. This optempo is stressing people and equipment, making it difficult for the United States Air Force (USAF) to prepare fully for potential combat operations in major regional conflicts. Beyond these current challenges, it is also likely that the USAF will be called upon to take on new MOOTW tasks over the next decade or so. The objectives of this study were threefold: (1) to help the USAF better understand the effects of current MOOTW on training and readiness, (2) to explore some options to reduce those effects, and (3) to propose new concepts of operation to enhance USAF capabilities to accomplish future MOOTW tasks. This report should be of interest to USAF planners and operators in the Air Staff, Major Command, and Numbered Air Force Headquarters and operational units, as well as to students of air and space power in the other services and the broader defense community.

Book Air mobility the key to the United States national security strategy

Download or read book Air mobility the key to the United States national security strategy written by and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2000 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since airlift was first used as a tool of national security during the Berlin Airlift, it has grown to deliver passengers, cargo, and fuel to operations worldwide in support of national security. However, Air Mobility Command is the single organization that performs for air mobility for the United States. Cm%Currently, the Air Force has structured Air Mobility Command for war, yet this command performs operations during times when the US is at peace. Air Mobility Command performs missions to support US military operations in hostile environments as well as humanitarian operations in non-hostile environments. The number of operations requiring mobility air forces has been on the rise since the Cold War ended 10 years ago. These steady-state operations seem to over task mobility air forces. This study centers on the question: Can Air Mobility Command's force structure, organized for two major-theater wars, fulfill that requirement and perform the steady-state operations in today's strategic environment? This study finds that Air Mobility Command's force structure cannot meet its requirements for two major-theater wars and that the current force structure is inefficient in meeting the requirements for steady-state operations. First, this thesis presents a primer to acclimate the reader to the complex environment and multifaceted requirements of mobility air forces. Next, this thesis examines Air Mobility Command's current force structure as determined by Department of Defense requirements for war. Then this thesis also describes the various types of missions that Air Mobility Command performs on a steady-state basis and evaluates the importance of these operations in fulfilling US National Security Strategy. Finally, this thesis recommends action that the Air Force and the Department of Defense should investigate in order to improve their air mobility capabilities in.

Book Guilty Or Innocent

Download or read book Guilty Or Innocent written by Don Rossignol and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2005 with total page 744 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our government has always maintained a certain level of secrecy when it comes to the internal workings of its organization. In the past our government has closed their eyes to certain actions by the CIA, FBI, and others. We as a people, along with the government, justified these actions with the thought of necessity in order to protect the freedom of this country. These actions we believed to be for the greater good of all people. However, when the government steps over the line and commits unlawful acts only for the greater good of a few people, the necessity can no longer be looked at as justified. This book is intended to have the reader attempt to answer the unanswered questions. It is written as though it were a trial. In a normal trial the prosecution would present its case first, and then the defense would present its case. By law the defendant is innocent until proven guilty. This is a case of "You, the people of the United States vs. the Bush Administration." There are many defendants in this case, most notable being president George W. Bush. For the past four years, the Bush administration has put its case to the people of this country for its actions within our borders and around the world. The Bush administration has placed many items into evidence, called many witnesses, and has asked you, the people of the United States, to trust them without question. The Bush administration, or the defense, rested its case with the reelection of President Bush. Now, it is time for the prosecution to present its case. I am not going to ask you to do any more than look at the case from both sides. If you need to refer back to the defense's case, or testimony, you will be able to review many speeches and addresses by President Bush and members of his administration, which will be placed into evidence. What I am asking you to do is use your common sense. At the end of this case, many questions will be asked. Answer those questions, and then you decide the guilt or innocence of the defendants. You are the jury. It is up to you to decide the fate of this country and those beyond our borders. No man is above the law, even if that man is the President of the United States.

Book Strategic Appraisal

Download or read book Strategic Appraisal written by Zalmay Khalilzad and published by Rand Corporation. This book was released on 2002-07-31 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Change--in international relations, in technology, and in society as a whole--has become the idiom of our age. One example of these changes has been an increasing recognition of the value of air and space assets for handling nearly every contingency from disaster relief to war and, onsequently, increasing demand for such assets. These developments have created both challenges and opportunities for the U.S. Air Force. This, the fourth volume in the Strategic Appraisal series, draws on the expertise of researchers from across RAND to explore both the challenges and opportunities that the U.S. Air Force faces as it strives to support the nation's interests in a challenging technological and security environment.Contributors examine the changing roles of air and space forces in U.S.national security strategy, the implications of new systems and technologiesfor military operations, and the role of nuclear weapons in U.S. securitystrategy. Contributors also discuss the status of major modernizationefforts within the Air Force, and the bill of health of the Air Force, asmeasured by its readiness to undertake its missions both today and in thefuture.

Download or read book The 71F Advantage written by National Defense University Press and published by NDU Press. This book was released on 2010-09 with total page 529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Includes a foreword by Major General David A. Rubenstein. From the editor: "71F, or "71 Foxtrot," is the AOC (area of concentration) code assigned by the U.S. Army to the specialty of Research Psychology. Qualifying as an Army research psychologist requires, first of all, a Ph.D. from a research (not clinical) intensive graduate psychology program. Due to their advanced education, research psychologists receive a direct commission as Army officers in the Medical Service Corps at the rank of captain. In terms of numbers, the 71F AOC is a small one, with only 25 to 30 officers serving in any given year. However, the 71F impact is much bigger than this small cadre suggests. Army research psychologists apply their extensive training and expertise in the science of psychology and social behavior toward understanding, preserving, and enhancing the health, well being, morale, and performance of Soldiers and military families. As is clear throughout the pages of this book, they do this in many ways and in many areas, but always with a scientific approach. This is the 71F advantage: applying the science of psychology to understand the human dimension, and developing programs, policies, and products to benefit the person in military operations. This book grew out of the April 2008 biennial conference of U.S. Army Research Psychologists, held in Bethesda, Maryland. This meeting was to be my last as Consultant to the Surgeon General for Research Psychology, and I thought it would be a good idea to publish proceedings, which had not been done before. As Consultant, I'd often wished for such a document to help explain to people what it is that Army Research Psychologists "do for a living." In addition to our core group of 71Fs, at the Bethesda 2008 meeting we had several brand-new members, and a number of distinguished retirees, the "grey-beards" of the 71F clan. Together with longtime 71F colleagues Ross Pastel and Mark Vaitkus, I also saw an unusual opportunity to capture some of the history of the Army Research Psychology specialty while providing a representative sample of current 71F research and activities. It seemed to us especially important to do this at a time when the operational demands on the Army and the total force were reaching unprecedented levels, with no sign of easing, and with the Army in turn relying more heavily on research psychology to inform its programs for protecting the health, well being, and performance of Soldiers and their families."
