Book A Deliberate Process

Download or read book A Deliberate Process written by Kenneth D. Carlson and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rapidly changing global environment of the twenty-first century requires properly developed strategic leaders. To meet these challenges officers are professionally developed throughout their careers as a result of legislative and related Officer Professional Military Education Policy. Is this sufficient in a contemporary and post Goldwater-Nichols environment? Deliberate education and training is required to properly develop military leaders that have the traits and competencies to deal with the nature of this changing environment. Due to the nature of the United States Air Force mission, the service tends to concentrate training of its officers on technical proficiency in their functional area rather than in broad leadership competencies, especially early in their careers. This project will study the USAF officer development program to determine if there is a deliberate process to develop strategic leaders.

Book Sharing Success Owning Failure Preparing to Command in the Twenty First Century Air Force

Download or read book Sharing Success Owning Failure Preparing to Command in the Twenty First Century Air Force written by Colonel Usaf David L Goldfein and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2012-08-17 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Command is the ultimate service. It is a time when we have the singular responsibility to create and lead strong Air Force units. A time when our passion for our Air Force and our vision for its future must be overwhelmingly clear. Early in the "Developing Aerospace Leaders" initiative, we began to focus on the way in which the institution teaches leadership and prepares airmen for command. What we found was a wide range of practices and a wide range of expectations - a complicating factor in today's Expeditionary Aerospace Force. We realize that preparing our officers to command effective, mission-oriented units must be a deliberate process. It must develop our unique airman perspective, creating commanders who are able to communicate the vision, have credibility in the mission area, and can lead our people with inspiration and heart. The foundation of our institution's effectiveness has always been its leaders. Colonel Goldfein's work provides valuable lessons learned and serves as a worthwhile tool to optimize your effectiveness as a squadron commander. This book is a must-read, not only for those selected to command a squadron but for all our young officers, helping them understand what the requirements of squadron command will be. Remember, command is a unique privilege - a demanding and crucial position in our Air Force. "Sharing Success - Owning Failure" takes you a step closer to successfully meeting that challenge.

Book Strengthening U S Air Force Human Capital Management

Download or read book Strengthening U S Air Force Human Capital Management written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2021-03-02 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The USAir Force human capital management (HCM) system is not easily defined or mapped. It affects virtually every part of the Air Force because workforce policies, procedures, and processes impact all offices and organizations that include Airmen and responsibilities and relationships change regularly. To ensure the readiness of Airmen to fulfill the mission of the Air Force, strategic approaches are developed and issued through guidance and actions of the Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Manpower, Personnel and Services and the Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Manpower and Reserve Affairs. Strengthening US Air Force Human Capital Management assesses and strengthens the various U.S. Air Force initiatives and programs working to improve person-job match and human capital management in coordinated support of optimal mission capability. This report considers the opportunities and challenges associated with related interests and needs across the USAF HCM system as a whole, and makes recommendations to inform improvements to USAF personnel selection and classification and other critical system components across career trajectories. Strengthening US Air Force Human Capital Management offers the Air Force a strategic approach, across a connected HCM system, to develop 21st century human capital capabilities essential for the success of 21st century Airmen.

Download or read book The Profession of Arms written by Sir John Hackett and published by MacMillan Publishing Company. This book was released on 1983 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I read this book on the recommendation from a fellow officer in order to gain a better historical perspective of the military profession. This book develops the lineage from Armies of the ancient world to today's modern Armies in a rather concise and insightful manner. Sir John Hackett focuses a lot on the relationship between the military forces and the countries they represent on the battlefield. He also offers some interesting opinions about training future leaders in the Armed Services based on his vast military experience and career. I thoroughly enjoyed this book (it has many interesting photos and prints throughout the text), although it is written from a European (the author is British) perspective. The author does devote some time to the US Army, but his main focus is the European military system. Therefore, if you are looking for a book about how the American Army has changed over time, I do not recommend this one. On the other hand, I do recommend this book for anyone wanting to learn more about how the profession of arms has developed over time. It would make a fine addition to your military history library if you have one, or serve as a great first addition, if you are thinking of starting one. -- website.

Book Leading Airmen

Download or read book Leading Airmen written by Edward Brennan and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This paper investigates the different approaches for leadership development by examining one particular feature: service culture. The study uses several lenses of organizational theorists, educational experts, and history to analyze each services doctrine, and developmental resources to understand the organization's commitment to developing military leaders. These lenses help identify the strengths and weaknesses of the approach each service uses. Compared against one another, the thesis evaluates the strengths and weaknesses of the Navy's, Army's, and Air Force's leadership development programs and synthesizes the best practice of each. The conclusions suggest that each service should create a single, robust, and comprehensive approach to leadership development. Combined in a systematic manner, this approach is capable of preparing today's junior officers for leadership into 2030 and beyond. Leadership is crucial to the success of any organization and the Air Force is no exception. The Air Force must continue to strive to be the best air force in the world, and this includes preparing its young officers for future leadership of the service."--Abstract.

Book Networks of Leadership

Download or read book Networks of Leadership written by Matthew D. Welch and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This study is addressed to all Airmen and commanders seeking to identify and develop good leadership within and across their teams, units, squadrons, and organizations. Evidence reveals a bias in US Air Force leadership assumptions which has focused development methods on individualized traits and attributes while overlooking the importance of social relationships and shared ethical purpose. Dependence on heroic individuals to command the force out of its future strategic challenges distorts the meaning of good leadership, blurs the distinction between commanding, managing, leading, and manipulating, and remains ill-suited to many challenges inherent to complex environments. The network model of distributed leadership, advanced by this thesis, offers a new perspective that reframes leadership by highlighting social network relationships, social reputation, and agency-based ethics. The usefulness of the network model of distributed leadership is demonstrated through a detailed historical case study examining the invention, development, growth, and decline of the USAF Aerospace Research Pilot School from 1961 to 1972. The author explores concepts of network brokerage, mechanisms of social network reputation, and the principles of virtue ethics while tracing the intentions, actions, and relationships among a diverse cast of influential actors. The final chapter of the study offers fresh historical insights with implications for today's leadership development efforts. The result of this study is a practical leadership lens--a distributed perspective that places focus on social relationships and morality over individual traits and competencies-- for today's Airmen and commanders to develop meaningful, moral, and mutual leadership throughout the Air Force."--Abstract.

Book A Comparison of Air Force Field Grade and Company Grade Officer Leadership

Download or read book A Comparison of Air Force Field Grade and Company Grade Officer Leadership written by and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although leadership development is important, the Air Force does not appear to have a comprehensive, empirical model for leadership development. For several years the US Army has had a service-specific leadership model (DAP 600-80), derived from empirical studies on hierarchical leadership (Harris, 1994), indicating that empirical development of a similar model for the USAF should be feasible. The purpose of this study was to determine differences in importance of leadership behaviors between AF company grade officers (CGOs), majors (O-4s), and lieutenant colonels (O-5s), thereby contributing to the establishment of an empirical leadership development model for USAF officers. The Managerial Practices Survey (Yukl, 1990) was administered to over 1000 officers at the USAF Air University. Analysis indicated the survey s eleven leadership behaviors are relevant to all officers, but become even more important as officers rise in rank. It also supported that the USAF can be divided into domains levels containing several ranks having only minor differences in leadership requirements and that CGOs, O-4s, and O-5s are in the same domain. In addition, domains appeared to be further divided into strata : sub-levels containing ranks with the same leadership requirements. O-4s and O-5s seemed to belong to the same strata and CGOs to another. Based on these findings, recommendations were made to ensure the leadership curricula at the USAF officer Professional Military Education schools are formed around this core of leadership behaviors, with increasing emphasis on the behaviors that become more important to officers as they rise through the ranks.

Book Advancing the U S Air Force s Force development Initiative

Download or read book Advancing the U S Air Force s Force development Initiative written by S. Craig Moore and published by Rand Corporation. This book was released on 2007 with total page 57 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Air Force's force-development initiative evolved from research that the RAND Corporation began in the late 1990s, aiming to improve the development of Air Force senior leaders. This monograph summarizes force development's history, recommends ways to advance the initiative, and suggests areas that need senior leaders' attention and decision making. In it they respond to discussions during 2005 with Maj. Gen. Tony Przbyslawski, Commander of the Air Force Personnel Center. In current force-development parlance, they concentrate on the development of "occupational competencies" that can be managed substantially and more definitively using officer assignments, in contrast to "institutional competencies" (e.g., negotiating, visioning, fostering diversity, listening actively, and demonstrating ethical leadership) that are less job-specific and that the Air Force is working to inculcate largely through education and training. This document should be of value across the Air Force manpower and personnel community and perhaps even more to career-field managers and development teams in other functional areas. It aims to help members of the Force Management and Development Council (FMDC) (formerly the Force Development Council) adopt a common vision for the future of occupational force development and to promote consistent advancements within and across their functional areas.
