Book Setting the Context

Book excerpt: Suppression of enemy air defenses (SEAD) has long been a critical concern to advocates of air power. It is especially critical because air power offers a primary means of responding rapidly and effectively to areas of conflict. Setting the Context: Suppression of Enemy Air Defenses and Joint War Fighting in an Uncertain World explains why SEAD has changed the basic fabric of air warfare. It provides a unique and original view into the world of electronic combat and SEAD that will enrich as well as inform. Lt. Col. James R. Brungess wrote this book for the Airpower Research Institute and it was the winner of the Air Force Historical Foundation's 1992 Colonel James Cannell Memorial Award.

Book excerpt: In the 1950s, the United States Air Force led the way in building continental air defenses to protect the nation against bomber attack. By the end of that decade, the United States and Canada deployed a warning network of ground-based radars extending from the United States' southern borders to the arctic tundra, a fleet of airborne early-warning planes, naval radar picket ships, radar platforms (the Texas Towers) fastened to the ocean floor in the Atlantic Ocean, and a civilian corps of ground observers. Once warning of approaching enemy bombers had been received, the military forces of the United States and Canada were prepared to unleash against the invader an arsenal of weapons that included fighter-interceptors equipped with lethal air-to-air missiles, antiaircraft artillery, and short- and long-range surface-to-air missiles, some nu clear tipped. The whole system was coordinated through a technologically advanced, computer-oriented command and control system, the first of its kind ever deployed. The story of the rise of air defense in the United States after World War II is complex, and this volume does not presume to be a complete history of the subject. It focuses on the U.S. Air Force's predominant role in defense of the continental United States against manned bomber attacks. Although the U.S. Army, the U.S. Navy, and the Canadian Air Force contributed resources to the mission, the U.S. Air Force had primary responsibility for research, development, and deployment of most of the systems and weapons. The outstanding exception was antiaircraft artillery, the province of the U.S. Army. In some respects, the Army can be said to have fielded a complementary air defense system separate from that of the Air Force. This book, however, examines the Army's part in the mission only as it concerns roles and missions controversies with the Air Force. The volume begins with the U.S. Army Air Service's involvement with air defense in World War I and traces the story through to the late 1950s and early 1960s. At that time, the intercontinental ballistic missile supplanted the bomber as the most dangerous long-range threat to North America, precipitating a dramatic decline in bomber defenses over the next two decades. A number of important themes emerge: the development of technology, particularly for command, control, and communications systems; roles and missions debates; interpretations and analysis of the threat; and Air Force theories and approaches to offensive and defensive strategic warfare. The last is by far the most pervasive theme.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is an authoritative history on the Army Air Defense Artillery Branch on Fort Bliss, Texas. Fort Bliss in 1940 was a cavalry post located on the Texas border. The post itself occupied the sixth location of what had been called Fort Bliss. In the summer of 1940 a number of Army National Guard antiaircraft regiments were called to active duty to spend one year protecting American cities and territories from air attack. In September the first antiaircraft regiment, the 202nd Coast Artillery (Antiaircraft) Regiment, arrived at Fort Bliss. Over the next four years the post became an antiaircraft training center and finally the Army antiaircraft training center. After the war, Fort Bliss became the premier guided missile testing and training center for the Army. All of the Nike missile battalions deployed to protect American cities during the Cold War trained there. As time passed, Fort Bliss expanded to 1.1 million acres, one of the largest Army posts in the world. By 1946, the antiaircraft arm was the owner of Fort Bliss. By 1957, the post had become the Air Defense Center and School for the United States Army. This book is the story of that progression until the Base Realignment and Closure announcement in 2005. By 2011, the Air Defense Artillery Center and School will be located at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. This will end the era of Air Defense Artillery ownership of Fort Bliss, Texas

Book excerpt: Originally published in 1997, this hitherto hard-to-find study examines the impact that construction of radar stations and command facilities had on the American landscape. With accompanying black and white photographs throughout, the author explores patterns, themes, and trends that created, influenced, and formed the backdrop to the Cold War defense radar program. This study provides an in-depth look at the radar systems, a state by state listing of the infrastructure that supported the systems, and an extensive bibliography. This historic content can be used to understand and evaluate properties associated with America's detection and command and control system.

Book The Air Defense of the United States

Download or read book The Air Defense of the United States written by Directorate of Historical Services and published by Military Bookshop. This book was released on 2012-12 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1952, this volume is a history of the evolution of an air defense system in the United States from approximately the end of World War II through June 1951. The decision to include in the present work an account of the pioneer air defense efforts of its predecessors as well as major developments within the Air Defense Command for the first half of 1951 was prompted by certain important historiographical considerations. Foremost of these was the necessity for placing the present Air Defense Command's air defense effort in its proper historical setting. Unfortunately, there was a year and one half period (June 1947 -December 1948) when no history of air defense was written. And while Continental Air Command histories for the period January 1949-June 1950 contained much information of value, the diversity of missions of that command had the effect of obscuring its air defense contributions as revealed in its official history. It is frankly admitted that a great wealth of data on certain of the subjects treated herein remains to be exploited. It is also acknowledged that several subjects deserving of treatment were not presented either for lack of time or because of a paucity of reference data. It is felt, however, that the considerations necessary to an historical appreciation of the complex subject of air defense have been revealed in the present work. In future semi- annual histories and historical monographs any omissions appearing in this volume will be corrected. The greatest of care was exercised to substantiate all facts and analyses in the history with pertinent documentation. Also, the officers of the headquarters were solicited to read and comment freely on those chapters the subject matter of which was most familiar to them. If, in spite of these precautions, inaccuracies of fact or misleading interpretations are subsequently revealed, immediate correction will be made in all outstanding copies.

Book excerpt: Iron Hand is an illustrated study of aerial electronic combat in the age of Surface-to-Air Missile. It describes the evolution of American anti-radar weapons, related jamming tactics and stealth technology as leading-edge countermeasures to the SAM and other sophisticated ground-based antiaircraft defenses. The focus is very much on new weapons and tactics as they emerged in combat, beginning with the Viet Nam War and her the Persian Gulf and more recent Balkans conflicts. Combining an analytical overview of the weapons systems mixed with first-hand andecdotal reminiscences from former air and ground crews, this complex story is explained in an accessile, meaningful and entertaining manner, with the hows and whys of aerial electronic comvbat given a full airing.
