Download or read book AIR CRASH INVESTIGATIONS KILLING 290 CIVILIANS THE DOWNING OF IRAN AIR FLIGHT 655 BY THE USS VINCENNES written by Dirk Barreveld and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2018-10-07 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On July 3, 1988, the American navy ship USS Vincennes, a Ticonderoga-class guided missile cruiser operating in the Persian Gulf, shot down Iran Air Flight 655, an Airbus A300B2-203, on its way from Tehran to Dubai. All 290 people on board died. Iran Air 655 flew within its assigned corridor. The USS Vincennes thought it had to deal with an Iranian F-14 fighter jet. From this point of view it was simply a case of mistaken identity. It is amazing that a guided missile cruiser with extremely advanced electronic capabilities such as the USS Vincennes, equipped with an ultra modern system such as Aegis, could make such a case of mistaken identity. Although the U.S. had to pay damages, a clear admission of guilt, the officers and commander of the Vincennes received awards and decorations after all.
Download or read book Aviation Law Cases Laws and Related Sources written by Paul B. Larsen and published by Martinus Nijhoff Publishers. This book was released on 2022-06-08 with total page 957 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In our post-9/11 world, the laws of aviation are under intense scrutiny. From torts law and victim compensation to passenger screening, pilots with guns, and international aviation agreements, the practice of aviation law is burgeoning. The book, AVIATION LAWS: Cases, Laws, and Related Sources, fills a gap in legal literature. It is directed to both practicing lawyers and to law students. The book introduces all the major areas of air law: International air law regime, crimes involving aircraft, economic regulation of domestic and international air carriage, litigation management, domestic and international liability regimes, governmental immunity from liability, airport law, airline travel restrictions, airport law, insurance, NTSB accident investigation, aircraft financing, FAA regulation of air safety, and airline labor relations. These subjects are presented not only in explanatory text, but also in cases and related source materials. The most important texts are annexed. The authors, Professors Larsen and Gillick, have regularly taught the course in Air Law at Georgetown University Law Center for more than 30 years. They have long time hands-on experience at the Department of Transportation and in private practice. Professor Sweeney, John D. Calamari Distinguished Professor of Law, has taught the course at Fordham University Law School for 30 years. He also has extensive transportation practice background. Download or read book The United States and Iran written by Sasan Fayazmanesh and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2008-03-31 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When and why did the United States policy of containment of Iran come about? How did it evolve? Where is it going? Much has been said about the US policy of dual containment, particularly as it pertains to Iraq. However, there has been little in-depth analysis of this policy when it comes to Iran. Sasan Fayazmanesh explores this often neglected subject by analyzing the history of this policy. The analysis includes the role that the Carter and Reagan Administrations played in the Iran-Iraq war, the numerous sanctions imposed on Iran by the Clinton Administration and the aggressive and confrontational policy toward Iran adopted by the George W. Bush Administration after the events of September 11, 2001. This topical read synthesises a range of primary sources, including firsthand reports, newspaper articles and electronic media, and presents a coherent analysis of the ebbs and flows in the US thinking on Iran and Iraq.

Thus, while the 1960s and the 1970s were the age of aircraft hijackings, the 1980s could be said to be the age of sabotage bomb attacks in civil aviation history.

Download or read book The Persian Puzzle written by Kenneth Pollack and published by Random House Trade Paperbacks. This book was released on 2005-08-09 with total page 571 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his highly influential book The Threatening Storm, bestselling author Kenneth Pollack both informed and defined the national debate about Iraq. Now, in The Persian Puzzle, published to coincide with the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Iran hostage crisis, he examines the behind-the-scenes story of the tumultuous relationship between Iran and the United States, and weighs options for the future. Here Pollack, a former CIA analyst and National Security Council official, brings his keen analysis and insider perspective to the long and ongoing clash between the United States and Iran, beginning with the fall of the shah and the seizure of the American embassy in Tehran in 1979. Pollack examines all the major events in U.S.-Iran relations–including the hostage crisis, the U.S. tilt toward Iraq during the Iran-Iraq war, the Iran-Contra scandal, American-Iranian military tensions in 1987 and 1988, the covert Iranian war against U.S. interests in the Persian Gulf that culminated in the 1996 Khobar Towers terrorist attack in Saudi Arabia, and recent U.S.-Iran skirmishes over Afghanistan and Iraq. He explains the strategies and motives from American and Iranian perspectives and tells how each crisis colored the thinking of both countries’ leadership as they shaped and reshaped their policies over time. Pollack also describes efforts by moderates of various stripes to try to find some way past animosities to create a new dynamic in Iranian-American relations, only to find that when one side was ready for such a step, the other side fell short. With balanced tone and insight, Pollack explains how the United States and Iran reached this impasse; why this relationship is critical to regional, global, and U.S. interests; and what basic political choices are available as we deal with this important but deeply troubled country.
